On another note, next week is Earth Week and I plan to celebrate by doing a mini-blog tour to talk about What Can You Do with an Old Red Shoe? A Green Activity Book About Reuse. Join me on the following lovely kidlit blogs to find out more about the making of the book, read reviews, and win a prize too! Several of the blogs will be holding book giveaways, your chance to get a copy of the book to share with kiddos you know for free. What better way to celebrate Earth Day then to do some recycling art activities with kids? Well driving less and planting a tree are probably better, but not nearly as fun.
Here is the schedule:
Monday the 20th: *Miss Rumphius Effect
Tuesday the 21st: *Wild Rose Reader
Wednesday the 22nd: 7 Impossible Things Before Breakfast
Thursday the 23rd: *A Patchwork of Books
Friday the 24th: Katie's Literature Lounge
*These blogs are having book give aways!

It's time to ooh and ahh over another gorgeous hand painted, signed original that's up for auction this week, April 13-17th, as part of Grace Lin's Small Graces year-long charity event to benefit the Foundation for Children's Books!
This month, we are being treated to a piece by guest artist and Blue Rose Girl, Anna Alter. You may know her work from the lovely picture book, Priscilla and the Hollyhocks (written by Anne Broyles), or her wonderful activity book about recycling that just came out last month, What Can You Do With an Old Red Shoe? Anna has a brand new picture book coming out on April 28th, called Abigail Spells (Knopf). She decided to feature Abigail and her friend, George, from this charming book along with a sweet proverb about friendship. How fitting it is, with Anna donating her time and talents to help her friend, Grace, with the auction this month!
As you may remember, the Foundation for Children's Books is a small non-profit organization that helps bring authors and illustrators to underserved schools in the greater Boston area. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to FCB, and this painting, like all the others, will come with a certificate of authenticity. Here's your chance to help a worthy cause and own a very special, original piece of art. Just click here to access the auction on Ebay to place a bid!

As most of you know, Grace has very generously founded yet another amazing charity event: the Small Graces auction to benefit the Foundation for Children's Books and the very worthwhile work that they do bringing authors into underfunded schools.
She could not have picked a better cause. The FCB works tirelessly to bring authors to schools that need them and promote literacy. I'll be visiting such a school in Chelsea this spring through their program and I can't wait, there is nothing like speaking to a group of kids who are hungry to learn about books and art and so rarely get the chance. I am humbled and delighted to be able to visit these kids.
Anyhow, the reason I bring this up is that this month Grace has offered me a way to participate in her project. I have donated my own illustrated proverb, to be auctioned on ebay from Monday, April 13th to Friday, April 17th.
As soon as I read the below proverb, I knew it would be perfect for an illustration of Abigail and George from Abigail Spells. I hope the painting is worthy of all the time and energy Grace has put into the project, and hope you will support the FCB by bidding on April 13th!

Small Graces: A Painting a Month to Benefit the FCB
January 2009 Painting
Auction from
Mon., Jan. 12-Fri., Jan. 16
Grace Lin's Original Artwork to be auctioned this week on eBay!
The talented author/illustrator Grace Lin has generously offered to auction original artworks on eBay every month in 2009 to benefit the Foundation for Children's Books. Grace has visited several under-served schools in Boston with us and she wants to support our work even further with her artwork.
Every month a small (5x5 inches), unpublished, orginal artwork will be auctioned on eBay with 100% of the proceeds to support the FCB's author/illustrator visits and residencies in urban schools. Each painting will illustrate a bit of wisdom, a proverb, a "small grace."
This month's painting (above), painted in gouache on watercolor paper, will be auctioned beginning Monday, January 12 through Friday, January 16. The estimated value is $450.
To bid on the painting, please click here. Or search for item # 220343292781 on eBay.
Grace Lin is the author and illustrator of more than a dozen picture books, including The Ugly Vegetables and Dim Sum for Everyone! Grace's critically acclaimed children's novels include The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat. Read more about Grace and her work here.
For more information about us: The Foundation for Children's Books
The Foundation for Children's Books (FCB), a nonprofit, educational organization, was founded in 1983 to assist the professionals who most directly influence young readers: teachers, librarians, and parents. We achieve this through professional development programs, including a dynamic speaker series, innovative conferences and workshops, as well as through author visits and residencies in under-served schools.
GRACE LINMy good friend
Grace Lin has come up with a wonderful idea for raising money to help fund the visits of children’s authors and illustrators in under-served schools in the Boston area. She calls this initiative
Small Graces.
What is Grace going to do to raise money? She’s going to auction off an unpublished, original painting each month on eBay! All proceeds of each auction will go to
The Foundation for Children’s Books to help pay the fees of visiting authors and illustrators.
January's painting will be auctioned from Monday, January 12 through Friday, January 16. Here’s the painting:

I’m excerpting from a post Grace wrote about this project for Blue Rose Girls:
It isn't fair that the only schools that get authors to visit are the ones that can afford to. Every visit I do, I can see the excitement in the students. But it also isn't fair to ask the author (the usually financially-strapped author) to do it for free either.
That is where organizations like the Foundation of Children's Books, the beneficiary of my new little project, comes in.
The Foundation funds school visit programs for low-income schools. So, schools that usually can't afford an author to visit, get one and the author doesn't have to suffer financially either.
Supporting the Foundation is win-win for everyone. Students of all incomes get wonderful programs and fellow authors are able to make a living to keep creating books! Isn't that great?

Please help us to spread the word about Small Graces!
Anna, I wanted to let you know how thrilled I am to have "won" the auction for your beautiful painting. I love reading about all you Blue Rose Girls, and met Grace many years ago so have liked following her career from afar -- well, western Mass.
When I first saw the painting I thought what a perfect gift for my best friend. But I think I have to keep it. At least for a while.
Thank you for the beauty you put in the world.
Jeannine Atkins
Hi Jeannine,
Thanks for writing, I'm so glad the painting is going to a happy home! And thank you for supporting the FCB!
All best,
Anna
