Steven Robson or Fanfare/Ponent Mon, publisher of some of the best manga on earth, writes that he’ll have sneak peeks of Eisner nominee Jiro Taniguchi’s THE QUEST FOR THE MISSING GIRL and some announcements:
I am exhibiting at SDCC and the Fanfare / Ponent Mon booth is C04 - it’s waaaay in the top right hand corner of the show (enter at door A and walk straight ’til you hit a wall, then turn round and wave!).
For the public I will, of course, have all my titles on sale (including the last few copies of the “awaiting reprint Blue” by Kiriko Nananan). Center stage will be Eisner nominee “The Ice Wanderer” by Jiro Taniguchi. Come wish me luck for Frdiay night! SDCC will also mark the first West Coast appearance of Disappearance Diary by Hideo Azuma which caused quite a stir during it’s unveiling at NYCC! That title will ship from Diamond soon after the show.
For the more serious and all professionals I will be unveiling Taniguchi’s next book from us “The Quest For The Missing Girl”.
Also I will have foreign language editions of several upcoming titles including “Awabi”, “Korea”, “My Mommy” and “Summit of the Gods” to show. In addition I have two massive new signings to announce. Shhhh! I have to keep some surprises!!
It’s all about dressing up over at Marvel — not only are they holding a costume contest, but a fashion show! With superheroines.
This year, the sidewalk won’t be the hottest place in San Diego– it will be in the Marvel Booth! On Friday, July 25, at 2:00, Marvel Entertainment and Disguise are proud to present their first ever fashion show. This is no cosplay; these are seriously fierce costumes worn by incredible models, strutting their stuff down the catwalk, for the debut of the sexiest line of costumes ever created and inspired by Marvel super heroes.
Dressing up as a super heroine in the past would have meant spandex and tights. No more! Disguise has tossed this old and unflattering cartoonish concept and instead made fashionable, wearable and fun costumes that not only fit great but look fabulous. These costumes are inspired by some of the hottest and most iconic heroes to grace the pages of Marvel, and this will be your first chance to see them live as they make their Comic-Con debut!
Come see Black Cat, Emma Frost, Spider-Woman, and more as you’ve never seen them- on the runway, as Marvel and Disguise transform Comic Con into Fashion Week, if only for an hour. The Fashion Show begins in the Marvel Booth (Booth #2429) Friday at 2:00 and will be followed by a photo-op with the models. For a preview of the costumes, visit this link: http://www.mallsoft.com/disguise/superheroines.html
Check out the fashion and find out how you can not only stop villains, but stop everyone in their tracks at this one-of-a-kind event only at San Diego Comic Con!

Here’s the lineup for The Second Annual Cartoon Art Museum Sketch-A-Thon at San Diego Comic-Con! Professional cartoonists and up-and-coming illustrators will be drawing at the Cartoon Art Museum’s booth throughout the weekend, raising funds and awareness for the only museum of its kind in the western United States.
Please visit our Facebook page for more information or contact Andrew Farago at gallery[at]cartoonart.org to volunteer your services. We’re still looking for artists for Sunday, and we’re also accepting sketches from artists who aren’t able to commit to one-hour drawing sessions at our booth.

COMICS ARTS CONFERENCE SESSION #9: TWOMORROWS PUBLISHING AND THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY (Saturday, JULY 26, 1:00-2:00pm, Room 30AB)
TwoMorrows Publishing is known for celebrating the art and history of comics, and the company has been making inroads into the academic community with its line of “how-to” books, magazines, and DVDs. Now, you can have your chance to hear, and to participate in, a dialogue with TwoMorrows to find out how to strengthen the relationship between the publisher and the academic community. What TM publications do you feel speak to you and your students, and what educational niches do you see that TwoMorrows can fill for the academic world? Publisher John Morrow, Danny Fingeroth (Write Now!) represent Twomorrows in this freewheeling exchange of ideas. Peter Coogan (institute for comics studies) speaks from the academic viewpoint. And Durwin Talon (Panel Discussions, Savannah College of Art and Design), and John Lowe (Working Methods, Savannah College of Art and Design) have a foot in both worlds. Q&A to follow.

Here’s another group of art superstars you will want to check out, with Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards, Sean Chen, Trevor Goring and John Paul Leon — like other groups, their press release mentions other art booths and suggests a new rallying cry: “BRINGING COMICS BACK TO COMIC-CON”.
As San Diego Comic-Con International (July 23rd-27th, 2008) grows each year, your favorite comic book creators can be harder and harder to find. In an effort to reach out to their fans, several groups of top comic artists and writers have dug into their own pockets for premium booth space in prime locations this year, right in the heart of the main exhibit hall.
For the fourth year in a row, theBLVD studio (booth #2707, across from Dark Horse Comics) will set up their own shop to meet fans on the main show floor. Tommy Lee Edwards (1985, BULLET POINTS), along with Sean Chen (SALVATION RUN, IRON MAN), Trevor Goring (WATERLOO SUNSET, WHAT IF? FALLEN SON), John Paul Leon (WINTERMEN, EARTH X), and Bernard Chang (WONDER WOMAN, THE GAME), will be signing autographs and providing portfolio critiques for aspiring artists, as well as selling original comic book art pages, new art prints, commissioned sketches, and limited copies of their acclaimed sketchbooks (including volume 3.0, featuring artwork by legendary artist Walter Simonson).
For the first time, the group of Jill Thompson (SANDMAN, SCARY GODMOTHER), Brian Wood (DMZ, NORTHLANDERS), and Cliff Chiang (GREEN ARROW & BLACK CANARY, DOCTOR 13) will have their own booth (booth #1322, next to First Second Books). Nestled between the popular publisher and retailer pavilions, their booth provides exceptional convenience and the unique opportunity for attendees to shop at nearby booksellers and have those items signed by the creators. Jill, Brian, and Cliff will also have graphic novels (including rare and out-of-print editions), art prints, original comic art, paintings, framed canvas pieces, tattoo flash and a number of commissioned sketches for sale at their booth. Check out their wares, chit chat and see what’s new!
Also debuting on the show floor this year is the group of Darwyn Cooke (DC:THE NEW FRONTIER, THE SPIRIT), Cameron Stewart (CATWOMAN, THE OTHER SIDE) and Dave Bullock (JUSTICE LEAGUE:THE NEW FRONTIER, ACTION COMICS) at booth #2207 (near DC Comics). The incredible threesome will have full-color art books and original art, and will host creator signings with some of their most notable collaborators, including Grant Morrison and Ed Brubaker.
Make sure you stop by each of these and other comics pros booths on the exhibitors floor and support the cause — “BRINGING COMICS BACK TO COMIC-CON”.
Everyone is teaming up, it seems, and this is a superstar lineup.
Award-winning and acclaimed comic book creators Jill Thompson (SANDMAN, SCARY GODMOTHER), Brian Wood (DMZ, NORTHLANDERS), and Cliff Chiang (GREEN ARROW & BLACK CANARY, DOCTOR 13) will exhibit for the first time at San Diego Comic-Con International 2008 (July 23rd to 27th). With the explosive growth and popularity of the comic convention, the creators join a rising number of comics pros who have chosen to reach out to their fans by exhibiting with prime locations in the heart of the main show floor.
Located at BOOTH #1322 (next to First Second Books) and nestled between the busy publishing and retail pavilions, Thompson, Wood and Chiang’s booth provides exceptional convenience and the unique opportunity for attendees to shop at nearby retailers and booksellers and have those items signed by the creators. “We’ve had great experiences at the show in the past, but having our own booth allows us to stretch our legs and give our fans better access to us,” said Chiang, who is currently working with rock legend Neil Young on the upcoming GREENDALE graphic novel.
With the release of her new book series MAGIC TRIXIE this month, Thompson felt it was more important than ever to have a dedicated space. “We’re committed to bringing our art to the fans,” Thompson said. “Now you don’t have to go walking from one end of the con to the other just to find us. We’re smack dab in the middle of things and have our own address, so you can plan your shopping, visiting, and panels accordingly.”
Added Wood, who is up for a Best Writer Eisner award at the show, “Our show schedules can be unpredictable, so it’s cool to have a home base at #1322. It’ll be the best place to find me at the show.”
In addition to graphic novels (both current and rare, out-of-print editions), original comic art and paintings, the group will also have art prints, framed canvas pieces, tattoo flash and a number of commissioned sketches for sale at their booth.
PR:
Please join featured artists Wendy Pini (Elfquest), Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Jim Woodring (Frank), Shannon Wheeler (Too Much Coffee Man), Keith Knight (Knight Life), and director Chris Brandt for a special screening of the comic book documentary Independents, Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 6:25pm to 8pm in room 26AB of the San Diego Convention Center during Comic Con.
The question most regularly asked of any creative professional is “Where do you get your ideas?” People are eager to participate in the process of artistic invention and imaginative expression, yet many seem to believe there is some magic involved. The documentary “Independents” reveals that all one needs is patience, persistence, a pencil, and a piece of paper. The documentary examines the creative drive, through interviews with dozens of artists who have paved their own roads to success as self-published graphic novelists. “Independents” focuses upon the motivation and passion of traditionally marginalized creators, and examines how artists’ lives are inescapably bound to their labors of love.
“People should see this - and see it this year! It is excellent!” says Wendy Pini, creator of the Elfquest graphic novel series. “The liveliness of the animation keeps the pace rapid and keeps the laughs coming. It really is an extraordinarily moving and informative piece. Nothing like it, to my knowledge, has been done.”
In addition to the artists attending the screening, interviewees include Craig Thompson (Blankets), Jessica Abel (Artbabe), Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics), Tony Millionaire (Maakies), Robert Williams (Zap), Linda Medley (Castle Waiting), and many others. Their insights into what it takes to pursue the life of a creator, and to follow ones own definition of success, serve as an inspiration to aspiring artists and professional artists, alike; regardless of the medium used to express themselves.
During the convention, the DVD will be available for sale at the Sparkplug booths 1533 and 1535. It is also available through Haven Distribution, and Amazon.com; or order copies directly from the filmmaker through the website: www.independentsdoc.com .
Chris Brandt has been involved in the comic book industry since 1995. His award winning short film, “Closing Time”, was an official selection of several major film festivals in 2006, and featured in the IFC News Special “The Comic Con Chronicles”. In 2004, his widely acclaimed viral video, “Dance, Voldo, Dance”, garnered the attention of G4, MTV, and Microsoft.
NBM is handing out a booklet with samplers of some pretty good comics to try:
• A complete story from NOCTURNAL CONSPIRACIES by David B. (the acclaimed Epileptic).
• A complete story from MORESUKINE, Dirk Schwieger’s comics blog revealing the oddities of life in Japan. Schwieger will be signing at the NBM booth in the convention’s exhibit hall.
• Sunday comics from HAPPY HOOLIGAN, the new volume of NBM’s series FOREVER NUTS: CLASSIC SCREWBALL STRIPS.
• An excerpt from WHY I KILLED PETER, a tale of an abusive priest by one of his victims.
• An excerpt from MISS DON’T TOUCH ME, a spicy suspense story.
NBM’s booth is #1528
After a groundbreaking 2008, Abrams will be at the con with a booth, signings and a panel which seems to be announcing…something. Details and schedules in the jump.
Harry N. Abrams, Inc., is pleased to be hosting a booth at San Diego Comic-Con for the third year in a row. The Abrams booth (#1021) will feature books from its children’s and adult imprints. There will be several celebrated authors signing in the Abrams booth, including revered comic artist Kyle Baker (Nat Turner), Mark Evanier (author of the landmark biography Kirby: King of Comics), Jon J Muth (artist and writer of the critically acclaimed graphic novel M), Lela Lee (creator of Angry Little Girls), and comics legend Al Jaffee (MAD Magazine and Tall Tales). (See schedule of events below).
Abrams publishes innovative works in the areas of comics, graffiti, fantasy, science fiction, and film. The 2008 lists include the immensely successful Kirby: King of Comics; the stunning graphic novel M by Jon J Muth; Kyle Baker’s landmark graphic novel Nat Turner (in both paperback and hardcover); Wordless Books: The Original Graphic Novels by David A. Beronä; Erotic Comics by Tim Pilcher; Graffiti Paris by Fabienne Grévy; The Animation Bible by Maureen Furniss; Child’s Play: The Berenstain Baby Boom by Mike Berenstain; Wacky Packages by the Topps Company (which includes an introduction by Art Spiegelman and four rare bonus stickers), Angry Little Girls in Love by Lela Lee, and last but not least, Tall Tales by Al Jaffee.
Says executive editor Charles Kochman, “There really is something for everyone on this list—books for all ages and for all tastes—each title unique and crafted in the classic Abrams tradition that readers have come to expect from us.”

Daniel Connor from Antarctic wrote us the following very nice email about what they have planned for San Diego this year:
In our twenty-four years of business, which began in 1984, Antarctic Press has published over 850 titles with a total circulation of over 5,000,000! This includes some of the most respected and longest-running independent series in comics. We were also the first comics company to exclusively produce manga styled comics in the Western Hemisphere, long before many others!
The creators who will be with us at booth 2307 include Fred Perry (Gold Digger, Legacy), Ben Dunn (Ninja High School, Marvel Mangaverse, Warrior Nun Areala), David Hutchison (Oz: The Manga, Dragon Arms, Pirates Vs. Ninjas), Joe Wight (Twilight X, Pirates Vs. Ninjas), Rod Espinosa (Prince of Heroes, Courageous Princess, Neotopia), Kelsey Shannon (Bastard Samurai, Yeti vs. Vampire), Richard Moore (Bone Yard, Far West, Fire and Brimstone), Robby Bevard (Ninja High School, Pirates Vs. Ninjas), Wes Hartman (Sky Sharks, I Hunt Monsters), J.L. Anderson (Gold Digger: Tifanny and Charlotte), Chris Allen (Warrior Nun Areala), Lee Duhig (Guru FX), and Jochen Weltjens (Guru FX).
We will be showcasing a batch of new and soon to be released comics this year. This includes Land of Oz: The Manga, Fire and Brimstone, Yeti Vs. Vampire, Gold Digger: Tifanny and Charlotte, and Pirates vs. Ninjas: Debate in ‘08. Also, celebrate with us as Fred Perry completes his 100th issue of his Gold Digger color series (on top of the fifty issues of the previous black and white series) and prepares for a grand relaunching of Gold Digger with issue 101 this fall!

Our good pals at Active Images reveal their doings and sent an attractive product shot as well.

We’re interrupting our ongoing attempt to sort through our San Diego-related email to note something rather curious.
You see, The Beat and Future Mr. Beat are staying on Monday night in San Diego to chill out, detox and simply sit staring silently into space. Our accommodations are still in a state of flux, but this morning The Beat was checking on hotel prices and was pleased to see you can get all kinds of rooms for reasonable rates and not $400 a night.
This got us thinking. Since the Comic-Con is far down the list of San Diego’s most profitable events, we wondered whether hotel rates would again skyrocket the next weekend for those far more profitable events. The answer: No.
Back in January we noted that the annual ESRI convention is considered to have a larger economic impact on San Diego than Comic-Con:
This PR from the mayor’s office admits that Comic-Con is an important piece of return business for the city, but says the Environmental Systems Research Institute show is an even BIGGER part of the city’s economics, attracting approximately 15,000 specialists in geographic information system software. These 15,000 map-muddlers generated some $46.5 million in economic impact for San Diego in 2006. Comic-Con? A mere $32.1 million. Doing the math, a geographer computer nerd spends $3100 in San Diego. A stormtrooper, a scant $267 (based on an estimate of 120,000 attendees in 2006).
This idea was echoed in
this story from the New York Times:
And it is decidedly low-rent. No. 33 on the official tip sheet lists the grocery chain Ralph’s Market as an alternative to dining out. The Bio International Convention in San Diego, a gathering of the biotechnology industry, with one-sixth as many attendees, produces about double Comic-Con’s $41.5 million in economic impact on the city.
So we decided to do a little comparison shopping.
Our first stop: the San Diego Convention Center’s official site, where we looked up some upcoming summer events. There we came across this shocking visual (click for a larger version):

CCI has ZERO attendees? Really? We’ll be charitable and guess that the website’s database cannot handle a number greater than five figures. Surely, that must be the reason, since nothing else remotely that big ever comes to town.
We continued on to the weekend of the ESRI convention, whose 15,000 attendees outspend Comic-Con 10 to 1. Would hotels be available during this eagerly awaited, worldwide beloved event? Below is a printout from Hotel.com of downtown hotel availability. Again, click for a larger version.

For kicks, we clicked on the same hotels for the weekend of Comic-Con.

Quite a difference, eh?
Once again, we call shenanigans. Based simply on the number of party invites and event information we’ve received this week, the 125,000 Comic-Con attendees spend a LOT more on HOTEL ROOMS alone than map muddlers, liver lookers or a bridal bazaar. In fact, let’s say a mere 20,000 of San Diego’s attendees are there on an expense account and paying going rates for hotels and so on, and spend a minimum of $2000. (Easily done based on our own expense reports every year.) That ALONE would generate $40 million. If the remaining 105,000 attendees at CCI spent a MINIMUM average of $67 (the “single can of tuna” theory), that alone would generate $7 million, for a total greater than the map muddlers.
Of course, there is little use in pointing this out. The San Diego city fathers are unlikely to ever accept Comic-Con as the world-famous event that it is. It must gall some of the locals that their city is now known as an adjective, just like Cannes, Sundance and Telluride. Admitting that the con brings in money to the city coffers is just too unpleasant a pill to swallow. So, the city within a city will go on, our own little Brigadoon.

DEXTER just got first-time Emmy noms for Drama and Best Actor and the show will also be at Comic-Con. We’re informed that Showtime has commissioned Shepard Fairey (OBEY) to create original art for DEXTER. You’ll be able to buy your own artwork based on the lovable serial killer at the Showtime site.
The DEXTER panel takes place Thursday July 24, 2008 -5:45-6:45 Room 6CDE with Kristin Dos Santos (E!) interviewing stars Michael C. Hall and Julie Benz with show producers Clyde Phillips and John Goldwyn plus a special guest.
Julie Benz will be also making an appearance before the panel at the Entertainment Earth booth on the convention floor right before the panel (3-5 pm July 24 ).
