26. Dumbo - 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray / DVD Combo - Review

One of the reasons I adore Disney's animated movies is because so many of the films are based on children's books and stories. In 1941, the Disney studio released their fourth animated classic -- Dumbo, an emotion stirring film about a little elephant with big ears. The simple and short movie, with its main focus on one memorable, loveable character is, in my mind, the most picture book-like animated film ever released by Disney. The story unfolds just as one would expect in a children's book.

"But I think I will have seen ev'rything, when I see an elephant fly." - "When I See An Elephant Fly", song by Ned Washington and Oliver Wallace

This year marks Dumbo's 70th anniversary. Dumbo has always been an emotional film for me to watch. I remember viewing it as a child and feeling terribly sad when Dumbo was separated from his mother and ostracized by his fellow elephants. I'm pretty sure the film helped shape my mental image of a circus as it was one of my earliest exposures to circuses. The bright images of the circus portrayed in the animation, the elephants and all the animals, the clowns -- they certainly made an impression on my young mind. Even though the plot is relatively simple, the movie is so powerful and presents an important life message. Almost everyone can find some way to identify with the main character. Dumbo, though handicapped by his big ears, finds a way to fly high, to soar above those who taunted him and he eventually adapts and overcomes the obstacle of his large ears. We all have obstacles we face in life, we all endeavor to fly and achieve success in our own way. With a magic feather, a little confidence boost (and good friends like Timothy Q. Mouse) anything is possible.

Unlike the first three animated classic films to come out of the studio, Dumbo was produced on a limited budget. The pictures look a little more cartoon-like and are less elaborate than other films. But this style fits the film perfectly. After all, a circus is a rather cartoon like place. There's a definite emphasis on the animals in this film and many of them talk, with the exception of Dumbo. His feelings are clearly expressed in the creative animation. Speaking of creativity, while most of the film is the normal animation, there's an unusual pink elephant dream sequence, a completely surreal and unforgettable scene! I like many parts of this film, but I think my favorite scene is the one where Dumbo's mom rocks him in her trunk while the "Baby Mine" song plays. That scene pulls at my heartstrings and effectively shows the strong bond of love between Mrs. Jumbo and Dumbo, between a mother and her child. Both my kids watched the movie with me and seemed to enjoy it, despite the heartbreaking moments.

My son is particularly fond of all the Dumbo scenes in which the Casey Jr. Circus Train appears. In fact, the Blu-Ray menu shows a version of the train and you scroll through the men

27. AllPosters.com Review

As we've been getting everything ready for Baby, I've noticed that a lot of the decor in different rooms in my house looks stale and old. If I take time to look around, I still like the things I have, but my eyes just kind of glaze past them.

When that happens, I know that it is definitely time to change things up! With more than 1,000,000 images on file, AllPosters.com is the perfect way to do just that.  They carry Posters, Wall Signs, Apparel, Canvas Art, Wall Decals, and a whole lot more!

My daughters have been a little bit jealous about all the attention Baby Brother's room is getting. So we sat them down in front of the computer and let them pick out some of their favorite posters.  It came as no surprise when these were the pictures they chose - Horse Peaceful Moment and Unicorn

When the Posters got here, my girls were so excited.  We had to go hang them up right away - one over each bed.

It's been a few weeks since we hung them up, but the posters are just as loved.  When I was getting them ready this morning, Bid went over to her unicorn picture and pet the unicorn.  It's just too beautiful.

To Buy - The Horse Peaceful Moment and the Unicorn Poster both retail for just $6.99.  AllPosters.com.  is a great place to find all different types of artwork on any budget.  For more info and special offers, you can follow them on facebook and twitter!

29. Sassy Baby Stay Clean Silly Squirts Review

My kids have always loved bath time. They love to splash and play, and make a giant mess. We've gone through a lot of bath toys over the years, trying to find ones that the girls love. Unfortunately it seems like the one that the girls like to play with don't hold up very well.

With Kik we had fun alphabet letters that she loved, but we bought pretty cheap ones and she literally bit them in half. Other toys have had hard plastic edges and caused injuries, and some they find a way to drink from. Which is just gross. We've also had toys that get moldy in the bath, and won't clean up even though they are designed for the bath.

A toy that my girls have loved playing with over the last few weeks, is the Stay Clean Silly Squirts from Sassy Baby.

There is a cat and a fish, and function much like other bath squirt toys - fill and squirt.  My girls love to pick a target in the tub and see if they can hit it with the water.  They also love to squirt each other, and occasionally me.

These particular toys though are made from soft plastic and are easy to fill up and squirt.  Another fun feature is that the toys themselves can be separated and the pieces mix and match to form other creatures.

This is my girls favorite combo!

My favorite thing about the toys is that they are dishwasher safe.  Which means no more moldy bath toys even if my baby does decide to chew on them in the future.

Sassy Baby has a huge variety of toys, feeding, and other products designed to help teach your child as they grow.  All of their products are designed to help inspire and develop and inspire all of your child's senses - hearing, touch, sight, smell and taste.

I'm really excited to try out their teething feeder when our baby gets older.  It's a great way to let a baby experience whole foods without the risk of choking or other problems!

It will be a few months before we can use it, but it looks like all you have to do is insert the food in the mesh container and let them have at it!

To Buy - Sassy Baby products can be purchased online and at retailers across the country!  For more info you can also connect with them on Facebook or Twitter.

30. Curtain Critters Review

With less than 2 weeks left, I'm getting really antsy about everything to have to do with the baby. With 2 girls at home, it just seems like I have less time to get everything ready. I still need to pack my hospital bags, preregister at the hospital, give the house a good cleaning, and put the finishing touches on the boys room.
The basics have been ready for awhile. The crib was set up. The curtains, dresser, and rocking chair were in the room. But something was still missing.

I love the white curtains that we hung in the room. They actually block out the light extremely well and look incredibly crisp and clean. But they are just so white. To take care of the problem, I went to the web and started searching for curtain accessories. I didn't want to change them drastically, but I did want something to spice things up a bit.

I found the perfect thing at Curtain Critters.

Curtain Critters are cute animal curtain tiebacks, that are perfect for any kids room or nursery.  The Curtain Critters consist of a plush animal head and arms that connect with Velcro to hold the curtains back.  Curtain Critters come in a variety of styles including farm animals, dinosaurs, bugs, and even snowmen.

Since we're doing a Safari theme in the boys room we decided to go with an Elephant and a Lion Curtain Critter.

They are absolutely adorable and add just the right amount of interest to the curtains without ruining the clean look I was going for in the room.

Even though I tell them not to, my girls love to take them off the curtains and attach them to other things.  They fit nicely on cribs, strollers, car seats, backpacks, and even make a great necklace.

To Buy - You can buy Curtain Critters in sets for just $24.95, or you can

31. Fisher-Price Little People Zoo Talkers Animal Sounds Zoo Review

We went to the zoo as part of our family vacation this summer, and now Bid talks about it all of the time. Whenever we get in the car and drive for more than 20 min. she always asks if we are going to the zoo.

She loved the monkeys and the big kitties and would spend every day there if possible. Since that would NOT be fun for anyone else in the family , we thought a better option would be to bring the zoo to her with the new Fisher-Price Little People® Zoo Talkers™ Animal Sounds Zoo.

The zoo is really fun!  It comes with a polar bear, lion, gorilla, and zoo keeper, and they each have their own special "habitat."  There is a ticket booth for the zookeeper, a fun arctic water slide for the polar bear, a tree house and swing for the gorilla, and a grassland area for the lion.

There is also a fun peek-a-boo feature on the tree where the Little People Animals or People can pop out at you!

The play set is great for kids, because the Zoo animals are designed to interact and make noises when placed on different parts of the play set.   Things click and squeak, and when the animals are placed on the dock it recognizes the name of the animal and the sound it makes.

I also like that the play set is double sided so more than one kid can play with it at a time.

To Buy - The Fisher-Price Little People® Zoo Talkers™ Animal Sounds Zoo retails for $40.00 and is a great addition to the Little People line of toys. The play set is very interactive and can provide hours of fun for your little one.  Additional animals for the set can be purchased separately, and may have to make an appearance at our house this Holiday Season!

To Win - To go along with this fun new toy, there is a Little People™ Animal Sounds Contest going on now through Nov. 30th! To enter the contest parents need to submit a video of their child demonstrating his or her best roar, grrrr or squawk (oh my!) for the chance to win a $10,000 cash prize and a trip to Fisher-Price headquarters in East Aurora, N.Y. for a special photo shoot and the chance to be on a fisher price toy!

In addition to the Grand Prize winner, ten First Prize winners will receive a Zoo Talkers toy prize

33. Jake and the Never Land Pirates Party

In Honor of National Talk Like a Pirate Day - Sept. 19th - and the official release of the new Jake and the Never Land Pirates DVD, we decided to have a Pirate Party for the girls and their cousins!

We wanted to keep things pretty simple, so even though Disney has adorable Pirate Invitations available for download online, we decided to just call all of our landlubber family members.

When the lads and lassies came into the house, they were immediately taken into a pirate dressing station and made over pirate style. Which basically means that they all received a pirate bandanna and a skull and cross bones necklace.

We had one crew member that didn't want to participate so we ended up with 4 pirates and a princess.

To kick things off, my husband made his own pin the eye patch on the Pirate Game.  After a little hesitation and a lot of  peeking, the kids got into the spirit of things.

The Jake and the Never Land Pirate Party Website has a bunch of fun printable games and activities for kids, so we did a few puzzles and played Jake's Jumble Matching Game.

Then it was snack time!  We thought about making an elaborate ship or treasure chest cake, but because all of the kids at the party were 5 and under, we decided to keep things simple.  We had a bucket of goldfish, a little piece of the ocean (Swedish fish floating in blue jello), and bone brownies.

For the big final activity my husband sent the kids on a treasure hunt.  Instead of having them follow one treasure map he sent them to multiple locations with a piece of the map hidden at each one.  The kids loved this!  They raced all over the house searching for the next clue, and were all so excited to see where they had to go next.

My husband really wanted to dig a hole in our side yard and bury the treasure in the dirt, but because there was a huge rainstorm yesterday I quickly vetoed the idea.  Instead the treasure hunt ended in the girls room where they just happen to have a treasure chest dress up box.  Inside the treasure chest were goody bags filled with pirate booty (chocolate do

34. Story Time Café Bundles - Maisy's Bedtime Book & Quilt Set Review

As a book lover, I find it very hard to resist children's book themed bedding and bath products. Several different retailers offer decor featuring beloved characters like Curious George, Winnie-the-Pooh, Mother Goose, Beatrix Potter's animals and Eric Carle's creations. Someday, if I can find the time, I'd love to try making my own quilt using fabric printed with designs inspired by children's books. But for now, if I'm going to give a book themed quilt, I'll have to find one to purchase.

Ciletti Publishing Group recently released an uber cute and cuddly Story Time Café line of book themed bundles. Many of the available bundles feature the Maisy character from the popular children's book series by Lucy Cousins. The bright and cheery illustrations found in the Maisy books provide the perfect subject matter for lovely crib/toddler sized quilts and bath towels. In addition to the Maisy products, the company also offers a Frosty The Snowman Story Time Bundle and a beautiful Alphabet Animals Story Time Bundle inspired by the Caldecott honor book by Suse MacDonald.

My family had the chance to take a look at one of the bundles available: Maisy's Bedtime (with stars) Quilt and Book Set. The set retails for $39.95 and includes:

Maisy's Bedtime paperback picture book (Odyssey Books/Candlewick Press ISBN 9780763656775)
• Crib/Toddler Bed Sized Rectangular Quilt (36 x 48 inches)
• Small "Buddy" Quilt (24 x 24 inches)
• Portable clear vinyl, zippered tote

The Maisy books are intended for the toddler/preschool audience and this bundle gift set also appeals to this age group. I love that the set comes with a small, matching buddy quilt that kids can use to cover up their stuffed animals and dolls.
The machine-made quilts consist of 100% cotton shell and 100% polyester fill. This particular Maisy quilt set has a white cotton binding. While I haven't tried washing the quilts they do look quite durable, and they are machine washable.

On the packaging info I also noticed something worth mentioning -- the words "Made in the U.S.A." Unlike most textile products, the Story Time Café quilts are constructed in America. As unemployment continues to rise and we continue to lose manufacturing jobs in our country, I applaud and support all companies like Story Time Café that make an extra effort to keep jobs in America.

In September 2011 the company is adding a few new sets t

35. Zhu Zhu Pets Ice Cream Social - Ice Cream Parlor and Truck Toys

We beat the heat in July by hosting our very own ice cream social! A few weeks back we invited our playgroup friends over for a special ZhuZhu Pets themed party and the kids got a chance to play with two new and cool toys in the ZhuZhu pet line: ZhuZhu Pets Ice Cream Parlor and ZhuZhu Pets Ice Cream Truck.

The ZhuZhu Pets Ice Cream Parlor playset reminds me of a retro ice cream shop. The parlor itself is pretty darn cute with a sliding drive through window on one side, a fancy red/white awning with sign attached to a checkered serving counter on the other side and a rounded bar in between. The set includes the following ice cream accessories: 7 Ice Cream Treats, 4 double-sided flavor ice cream tubs, and an ice cream scoop. The set also includes a picnic table and umbrella as well as connector pieces so you can attach it to other ZhuZhu Pets sets. When a ZhuZhu pet drives over the track bumps in the drive-thru or inside the parlor, it responds. For instance, when it goes through the drive-thru lane it stops and makes noises that sound like someone placing an ice-cream order.

The ZhuZhu Pets Ice Cream Truck is even more fun. A ZhuZhu Pets hamster can "drive" the truck! The truck is designed with an open back and has a special ramp where you place a ZhuZhu hamster. When the hamster drives the truck around, the truck plays music -- a familiar, chiming ice cream truck melody. The truck set includes a little ice cream man hat, sized to fit on a ZhuZhu Pet. We took a short video so you can see the truck in action:

36. Mother Goose Club DVD - Review

I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit that I haven't spent a lot of time teaching my preschooler son all the familiar nursery rhymes. For some reason I read the rhymes more often to my daughter when she was younger. Of course, given my love of Mother Goose, we've read Mother Goose books but not repeatedly. Sometimes I sing the rhymes for my children, but we haven't really listened to many of the nursery rhyme melodies on CD or on DVD either. In my childhood I learned and memorized many nursery rhyme melodies and there's no doubt in my mind that this early exposure to nursery rhymes helped accelerate my reading and rhyming skills.

Team Mom recently introduced my family to a nursery rhyme inspired, educational live-action children's TV series called Mother Goose Club. The series is aimed at the toddler / preschooler age group and currently airs on various PBS stations (though I don't think we've seen it on our local station). Produced by Sockeye Media, the program has received 14 Midsouth Emmy® award nominations. Just recently the company released a DVD called Nursery Rhyme Singing Time with Mother Goose Club. Here's a clip of the song "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" from the DVD:

The DVD includes 15 familiar nursery rhyme songs and five Mother Goose Club episodes.

Songs:
Jack Be Nimble • Itsy Bitsy Spider • Hickory Dickory Dock • One, Two, Buckle My Shoe • Rig a Jig Jig • Where is Thumbkin • Little Bo Peep • Clap Your Hands • Baa Baa Baa Sheep • Mary Mary Quite Contrary • Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear • Humpty Dumpty • Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star • Pat-a-Cake • Little Boy Blue

Episodes:
Baa Baa's Rhyme Time Bonanza • Hickory Dickory Dock Rocks • One, Two, Buckle My Shoe Eep Counts to Ten • Itsy Bitsy Spider Time • Teddy Bear Boogie Woogie

The Mother Goose Club characters are certainly zany! The six characters -- Teddy Bear, Jack B. Nimble, Little Bo Peep, Baa Baa Sheep, Mary Quite Contrary, and Eep Mouse -- are actual adults and kids dressed up in brightly colored costumes. The characters sing and dance, all the while teaching young viewers about rhyming words. The characters remind me a little of those from the Doodlebops series, a PBS show we watched for a short period when my daughter was younger. Perhaps that explains her fascination with the Mother Goose Club characters' showy wigs and costumes.

Parents and educators can either pick and choose songs and episodes individually from the menu or play everything at once. If you select "play all," the DVD plays the nursery rhyme songs first and then the episodes. My preschooler son prefers the short and to the point songs and likes to sing along, especially with his favorites, "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider." The episodes concentrate primarily on teaching rhyming skills using various nursery rhymes. I did notice that a few of the songs aren't what I expected. "Where is Thumbkin" is abbreviated and only covers thumbkin and pointer, neglecting the other fingers. The "Baa Baa Black Sheep" song rhyme is actually titled

37. Mega Bloks Dora's Garden Gazebo - Review and Giveaway

With the exception of a few daffodils, the gardens outside our home sit vacant and we're waiting patiently for warmer weather. Hopefully, sometime around Mother's Day, we'll start planting. In the meantime, the little green thumbs in our home have kept busy with some pretend gardening with Dora.

Dora's Garden Gazebo is just one of many Dora the Explorer products that Mega Bloks offers. The gazebo set includes the following 19 pieces to encourage pretend gardening play:

• Build & Dress Dora with 2 interchangeable skirts
• Baby Blue Bird
• Gazebo building (4 blocks)
• Watering Can
• Flower Pot
• Sunflower
• Patio Table and Umbrella
• Pine Tree
• Fence
• Extra blocks (3)

The set is recommended for ages 3+ and includes several small parts. Building the gazebo as pictured on the box really isn't too difficult. Like all building sets, kids can use their imagination to set up the blocks however they prefer, anyway. The small playset works perfectly fine as a stand-alone set and offers several options for imaginative play. My kids prefer to set the gazebo up separately and move the accessories around while they play.

The Build and Dress Dora figure has some special features worth mentioning. It is a positionable doll -- her arms and legs move and her head twists. Even her wrists rotate, allowing her to grasp onto the watering can and dump pretend water onto her flower! The figure pulls apart to make it easy to change out the skirt, from blue to pink or vice versa. Also, if Dora is in the mood to wear pants, one can just leave the skirt off altogether. While my kids can pull the figure apart themselves, they have some difficulty putting it back together.

My daughter especially enjoys playing with the Baby Blue Bird. In fact, at the time I took the photos, the bluebird was off on an exciting adventure somewhere in our home. My son is a little sad that the set only includes one character figure from the TV show. He wanted to know what happened to Boots! I do wish that play sets like this would include more than one main character. Siblings would be able to play with it together and the figures could hold conversations. Also, though it includes a table, this garden set lacks a chair. My kids remedied the situation by using a chair from a Fisher Price toy. An extra flower would be a nice addition as well. The buildable playset works with other Mega Bloks sets (as well as Lego DUPLO bricks) for open-ended play. My kids plan to build a house for Dora so they can attach this set as an outdoor living space.

Dora's Garden Gazebo retails for $14.99 and is available at Kmart, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, select Target stores and Amazon.com.

38. Caillou Bathtime Vehicles: Caillou and Rexy Toy Boat and Caillou Classic Doll - Product Review

The character Caillou is popular with preschoolers around the world thanks to his television series by Cookie Jar Entertainment. The show airs on various stations including PBS and Sprout. In the television series, Caillou is a preschool-aged boy that goes on adventures and learns about the world around him. But I bet some might be surprised to learn that the TV show is based on a series of books by Christine L'Heureux and illustrator Hélène Desputeaux. That's right, in the books he was originally a nine-month-old baby, hence the bald head. His name comes from the French word for pebble. The Caillou series of books were created to help parents and young children discuss troubling situations and talk about their emotions. We own a couple of books in the Caillou Little Dipper series (2-4), and there are a number of different Caillou series collections based on age groups from birth to the age of six.

My kids have not watched the TV show because it does not air on our local PBS station, but they are familiar with Caillou from reading the books. Recently, we received a couple of Caillou toys for review and the toys have been quite popular in our home, especially with my son. Both toys are manufactured by Famosa / id toys.

Caillou Bathtime Vehicles: Caillou and Rexy Toy Boat

Although we have several bath toys, this Caillou Bathtime Toy Boat is currently the favorite bathtime toy in our home. At a price of only $16.99, I'm pretty impressed by how well it is designed and constructed. The green and yellow boat is about 9 inches long and 5 inches wide, floats well in water, and is easy to clean. The boat comes with two removable figures, Caillou and Rexy the dinosaur as well as a red sail. Kids can disassemble and reassemble the Caillou and Rexy figures, and exchange the tops and bottoms to make funny looking Caillou-dino creatures. I love how this interchangeable design feature adds another level of imaginative play to the toy.

However, the thing that is really neat about this boat is that it has a removable wind-up propeller motor that spins. The motor does not require batteries but operates mechanically and it instantaneously mesmerized my son as soon as we opened the package. I took a video of my son playing with the toy for the first time so that you can see how easy it is for a child to turn the motor key. In the video, my son also demonstrates how to reassemble the Caillou figure (he was a little worried that the figure was broken).

The propeller is strong enough that it does propel the boat ever so slightly forward in water, but even if it didn't move the boat, th

39. Lamb of God Lenten Craft & The Ultimate DVD Read and Share Bible: Volume 2

At church, before communion, we often sing The Agnus Dei. "Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us." I often wonder what my kids are thinking when they hear the verses of the Agnus Dei. During Lent many of us teach our children that Jesus died on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. The imagery of Jesus as the Lamb of God is a natural extension of this teaching and the symbolism is worth discussing during the Lenten season with your kids.

John the Baptist proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God: "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29 NIV)

God offered up the perfect sacrifice, his Son, the “Sacrificial Lamb." Through Jesus' death on the cross and His resurrection, we can have eternal life if we believe in Him. "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." (1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV)

When we sing about the Lamb of God, we remember Christ's death on the cross and the sacrifice, and we praise God and offer our thanks and devotion to the Lamb, our Redeemer. "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" (Revelation 5:12 NIV)

Lamb of God Crayon Resist Lenten Craft

In art, the Agnus Dei symbol is often depicted as a lamb bearing a cross or banner. We made our own Agnus Dei artwork today for our stArt project. Starting with a white piece of paper, we cut out the lamb's body in a cloud shape.

While the kids were busy cutting out a head and legs out of black paper, I took a white crayon and wrote "Jesus" on each of the white body pieces. I also added some white swirls to look like wool. Using watercolor paint, the kids covered the lamb's body with paint and, through this wax resist artwork, it was revealed to them that Jesus is the "Lamb of God." Our sins are represented by the paint and Jesus, written in white crayon, takes away the sins of the world. I cut out a cross shape out of brown construction paper while the kids painted.

After the paint dried the kids assembled their own Agnus Dei artwork. The artwork indeed reminds us that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

40. Wordful Wednesday - Potty Training Woes

Diapers, goodbye! Potty training has commenced!

Up until last week, my toddler son had successfully avoided anything to do with the potty. Like many toddlers, he stubbornly refused to use it, or in his case go anywhere near it. He had the mindset that if he ignored the potty, it might just go away.

Then, there was the insistence that we had the wrong potty at home. The little Pooh potty that his sister used when she trained was not good enough for him. He had, unfortunately, noticed a Cars potty one time when we were purchasing diapers. That's the potty he wanted. No Cars potty - no deal.

I avoided buying the Disney Pixar Cars Rev and Go Potty for as long as possible. The potty has a number of negative reviews online, and, being a reviewer myself, I didn't want to spend our money on a piece of junk. We tried to convince him to use the big potty or try the little one we already owned. But, nothing worked. Once again, No Cars potty, no potty period.

We finally broke down and bought the thing. With the help of a few Matchbox car incentives, my son used it and now wears his big boy underpants. Potty training success - both #1 & #2. The problem is the urine puddles. I'm sick and tired of cleaning up the mess from this poorly designed potty. The engineer in me wonders how it made it through quality control. Did they even test the potty out with little boys? It's a Cars potty, a product that is mostly marketed toward boys, and yet there's really no splash guard to speak of and the potty leaks something fierce. My son is pretty careful holding and aiming (for a two-year-old) and if he sprays anywhere near the top of the seat, the urine leaks down in between the cushioned seat and the removable basin right onto the floor. Urine also collects in a shallow rim around the edge of the potty. Puddles all over the floor, wet socks -- POTTY NIGHTMARE!

Obviously, the idea of a Cars potty appeals to kids. It's fun, colorful and has a neat-o pretend flush shifter handle that makes race car noises. While it's nice that the top part can be removed and snapped on top of an adult potty as a trainer, that part of the design isn't helpful if it causes the main potty to leak. As frustrating as it is for me, my son loves the potty, so it looks like we're stuck with it for a few more months until I can convince him to use the adult potty.

Do you have any potty training woe stories?

41. Yoplait Frozen Smoothies - Review & KitchenAid Blender Prize Pack Giveaway

I struggle with trying to find healthy food options for breakfast and snack time. When I'm hungry, quick and easy is the best. I'm particularly fond of smoothies, but I don't often make them because either I don't have all the ingredients needed or I'm feeling too lazy to locate them and put them all in the blender.

Recently, thanks to MyBlogSpark, I had the opportunity to try out Yoplait Frozen Smoothies. This smoothie mix is found in the freezer section of the grocery store. The smoothie package contains Yoplait frozen yogurt chips and frozen fruit -- everything needed to make your own fruit smoothie, with the exception of milk. All that you need to do is dump the contents into your blender and add milk (the package says to use skim, but I used 2% because that is what we had on hand.) It only takes a couple of minutes to make a delicious drink.

The mix comes in four different flavors: Blueberry Pomegranate, Triple Berry, Strawberry Banana, and Strawberry Mango Pineapple. One package makes two servings and each serving contains only 110 to 120 calories.

We tried out the Triple Berry flavor containing strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, and I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package and noticed the large frozen real fruit chunks. Instead of adding 1 cup of milk, we added a little more to make a thinner smoothie that the kids would be able to drink with a straw. I like my smoothies thicker so next time I'll follow the package directions. It only took a minute for the blender to mix up the batch, and we had a nice, frothy cold drink to enjoy. It's an easy, peasy, no fuss way to a yummy smoothie. The smoothie tasted as good as anything I've made from scratch, and I love that it contains calcium and live and active yogurt cultures. My son loved his "shake." Unfortunately my daughter was less excited about it because it contains seeds. Someday soon I hope she'll get over her seeds in food issue! I plan to keep a few packages on hand for when I'm craving a light and cold fruit-filled snack.

Even though MyBlogSpark sent along an awesome 3-speed KitchenAid® Blender to use, we decided to use our own, not-as-fancy blender to review the product and will donate the lovely new KitchenAid to a charity. I'm sure a deserving family will really appreciate receiving it during the holidays.

42. "...Featuring Norah Jones " - CD Review

Norah Jones has the kind of timeless voice that I never tire of hearing. Her mellow, rich melodies envelope like a warm, fuzzy blanket and carry the listener away to a calm and slower paced world. Every time I listen to one of her albums I have the urge to grab a cup of coffee, sit in a comfy chair and observe the world as time passes by. The talented singer shows off her musical versatility in her newest album, ...Featuring Norah Jones. The album released last week on November 16th and is a collection of various collaborations with well known artists including the Foo Fighters, Ray Charles and Dolly Parton.

The 18 songs on the album were recorded over the last decade and showcase a wide range of musical styles. Some of my favorites include the "Virginia Moon" (with Foo Fighters) with it's jazzy, bossanova beat and "Ruler of My Heart" (with Dirty Dozen Brass Band), a bluesy song sung with attitude and heart. And, of course, November is the ideal time to listen to Norah's version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" (with Willie Nelson). The two banter back and forth together so perfectly, they could have wrote the spicy song. Another favorite toward the end of the album is a cover of an 80s song originally sung by Roxy Music, "More Than This" (with Charlie Hunter). Norah's sultry, jazzy style gives the song a whole new life. If you're a Norah Jones fan, make sure to add this album to your Christmas list.

And make sure to check out the interactive widget below. It is probably one of the coolest widgets I've come across. You can click on the names to hear snippets of the songs and watch videos of Norah discussing the various collaborations on the album.

Thanks to One2One Network for the review opportunity and for providing a CD for my family to review. I am an Amazon affiliate and may receive a very small commission for products purchased through my Amazon links.(View my full disclosure statement for more information about my reviews.)

43. Disneynature: Oceans Blu-ray/DVD Combo - Review

My kids have never seen an ocean. They've never walked on the sand or felt the waves lap at their feet. They've never heard the ocean roar, though I know they'd love the sound. They like pretending to hear the ocean by holding Grandma's large conch shell to their ears. When you live in the Midwest, a trip to the ocean is a vacation, something that takes planning and time. Someday we'll take the kids to visit an ocean. But for now, they'll have to experience it in books and on film. Disney's latest release, Disneynature: Oceans Blu-ray & DVD is a great place to start.

Disneynature: Oceans premiered in U.S. theaters on Earth Day 2010. The Blu-ray/DVD combo just came out on October 19th and we had the chance to preview it in our home. Wow, the cinematography in this masterfully produced documentary really is spellbinding. My kids sat entranced for a good portion of the movie, soaking in the fascinating, crystal clear photography and expressive narration by James Brosnan. It really feels like you are right there in that underwater world alongside the extraordinary creatures and sights.

The documentary explores all five oceans (the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic (or Southern) Ocean). In the beginning of the film children run along the beach and a young boy pauses to contemplate the sight as the narrator remarks, "to really know the ocean, you have to live it." For one hour and 24 minutes, viewers truly live it and gain a special appreciation for the "universe of wonder and mystery" through the amazing sights and sounds caught on film.

One of my favorite quotes from Oceans is when the narrator remarks, "Down here it's like nature has given everything a try." Views get a chance to witness a variety of different species, all living in their natural habitats -- yellow clouds of jellyfish, mobula rays, a extraordinary blanket octopus, curious sea lions, humpback whales waking up from a slumber, a leafy sea dragon, a strange looking Asian sheepshead wrasse -- the list goes on and on. There's a touching scene with a walrus mother cradling her baby. In one particularly powerful scene, dolphins jump and swim with speed through the water, herding a large school of fish together while sea bird dive down snatching the fish in their beaks. An impressively large whale joins the feast -- what a sight!

The narration is there more for effect than for explanation. This is a very visual production, a starting off point for independent exploration. I sat and watched the movie along with my kids and we conversed throughout, discussing the images on screen. As I po

44. Our Newest Addition

GOTCHA!! But I sure got your attention, didn't I!?!?

Well - I didn't lie - it really is a new addition - just an inanimate one! (Those are the best kind for the Bilby's!!)

I got an email from Simply-Bags asking if I'd like a bag in exchange for a review - I am always excited to do something like this and so I agreed.
I have been nothing but pleased. The bag is classy and functional - there are lots of compartments - yep, I'm a compartment girl. And it is wonderful for my laptop or other items. I used it to tote some books to a meeting and it was great - thin, lightweight, and easy to take along.

I really like it - check it out for yourself. Embroidered Tote Bags

45. What Pink Means to Me - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In my grandparents' spare bedroom there's a gray wig sitting on top of a stand. It's my grandmother's wig. She bought it over 25 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I can't remember the first time I learned what the word cancer meant. I can't remember much about the time when my grandmother went through her cancer treatments. But I remember the wig. I remember thinking that it didn't look very much like my grandmother's own thick and wavy gray hair. Her real hair grew thin but came back overtime. My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To me that pink color stands for strength, faith and hope. When I walk through the stores and see the pink ribbons, the pink merchandise, the pink labels, I am reminded of my grandmother and of all those who have dealt with or are currently dealing with this disease. I am reminded that I should take the time for those monthly self-exams. I am reminded that I need to take care of my body, eat right and exercise. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is coming to an end but the reality is even as the pink fades, the fight with this disease continues on.

There are many different campaigns, companies, individuals and organizations that help spread awareness, donate money to help find a cure and provide hope to all those dealing with breast cancer. It is important that we all work together to raise awareness and bring attention to this disease. Early detection and screening through self-examination and yearly mammograms are crucial because breast cancer is most treatable in the when it is found early. And, through the ongoing development of life-saving treatments and the search for the causes, those dealing with cancer can find support and remain hopeful for a cure.

Here are some breast cancer related websites that I've become aware of recently -

You Are the Best Medicine - Children's Picture Book about a parent with cancer

46. Secrets to Tutu Making Success - DVD Review & Giveaway

With Halloween only a week away, the costume scramble has begun. I just finished my daughter's Ladybug Girl costume this week. As I'm sure many of you know, Ladybug Girl (from the picture books by David Soman and Jacky Davis) wears a bright red tutu. I really didn't want to purchase a tutu, especially since some of the fancier ones cost $20+.

Thankfully, Jenni from MissTutu.com just recently contacted me about reviewing her tutu making DVD tutorial, Secrets to Tutu Making Success. Talk about perfect timing. I found the DVD extremely helpful. I'm not sure my homemade tutu would have ended up looking as good without all her helpful tips and detailed instructions on what and how much material to buy and how to assemble the tutu. Without this guide, I would have never thought to use a rotary cutter to cut the tulle and her tips on how much tulle to use saved me from having to make multiple trips to the craft store for more.

Surprisingly, these tutus are very easy to make. I made a Basic Tutu in one hour, from start to finish. Pretty good for my first attempt! With practice, I'm sure that I could easily make one in half the time. The whole tutu cost me about $7 for materials, but if I would have used coupons and shopped around, I could have easily spent much less than that. A bargain, either way.

The Secrets to Tutu Making Success DVD includes directions on how to make 15 different tutu designs, including the Basic Tutu. None of the designs require a sewing machine. Even a novice crafter can easily whip up a tutu by following this

47. Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Diamond Edition - DVD Review

Almost 20 years ago, in 1991, the movie Beauty and the Beast made its debut in theaters. I remember going to see this amazing version of the "tale as old as time" when it first came out and marveling at the wonderful animation. Even high school students like myself at the time found the movie amusing and witty enough to become a favorite. I have fond memories of my friends and I sitting in the band room listening to the CD and remarking on the moving and expressive music. Beauty and the Beast is a wonderful story in itself, but this Disney production made it into so much more -- a powerful love story with magical characters in a wonderful musical form. And then there's Belle, a princess for every little girl to admire, an intelligent, adventurous book-lover with brown hair and brown eyes. The movie features a bookstore and a to-die-for, amazingly large library in the castle. Yes, I've loved Beauty and the Beast from the beginning.

"Ohhh, isn't this amazing, /It's my favorite part because, you'll see /Here's where she meets Prince Charming /But she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three!" - "Belle"

Finally, after being locked in the Disney Vault for a long while, Beauty and the Beast is available once again for purchase, this time in the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Diamond Edition. Disney released this newly restored version last week, on October 5th (the 2-Disc standard definition DVD releases on November 23). The Blu-ray Combo Pack includes two Blu-ray Discs plus a bonus DVD for regular disc players. Thanks to Disney, we recently had the chance to watch this newest Blu-Ray version.

I'm not going to rehash the synopsis because the tale is so familiar and the film so popular it hardly needs an introduction. Beauty and the Beast is one of Disney's most beloved and highly-regarded films, receiving two Academy Awards for music in 1992, three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture, Best Original Score and Best Original Song in 1992, and two Grammy Awards in 1993. It was previously re-released on DVD in 2003. What this newest version brings to the plate is a brightly restored picture, a new audio in 7.1 Digital Surround Sound, and tons and tons of behind-the-scenes stories and bonus features.

My daughter had the opportunity to watch a community production of the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast this su

48. KNOW: The Science Magazine for Curious Kids

According to a recent White House Press release, President Obama announced a new goal of recruiting 10,000 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) teachers over the next two years. Students in the U.S. lag behind in math and science when compared to their peers in other countries and the government wants to see improvements in STEM education. Even at my daughter's school I've noticed they've started to put more of an emphasis on math and science. Each week in kindergarten, my daughter observes and participates in a new science experiments and every week she brings home a math at home worksheet to complete.

This fall I've been trying to focus more on science and math with my kids in our daily lives. While the school will teach the basics, I believe it is important for us, as parents, to encourage the curious minds of children through simple home activities. Starting this past month, we've been trying to participate in Science Sunday every week.

Just recently through Mom Central, I learned of a new science publication for kids ages 6 to 9. KNOW: The Science Magazine for Curious Kids by Mad Science contains short articles and plenty of engaging pictures, experiments, games and activities to help children think scientifically. Right now a free online copy of the Sept/Oct 2010 KNOW Magazine is available for download. A bi-monthly publication, the yearly subscription rate for the U.S. is $28 (Canadian dollars). That price doesn't seem too bad, especially considering the magazine contains very few ads.

My kids and I really enjoyed browsing the magazine online. The articles are laid out in an artful, eye-pleasing way, with the right balance of text and pictures on each page. This newest issue contains all sorts of interesting pieces on shapes, patterns, origami and more. The see-through frog on page 3 amazed my children and they wanted to know more about it. We used the page on Fibonacci Fun in this issue as the basis for one of our Science Sunday posts a few weeks ago. And, there's even a page featuring book reviews by kids! Hooray! This magazine looks like an excellent supplement for home science studies. I also think that the publication might be a good one for public and school libraries to offer for check-out to their patrons. Magazines like KNOW provide the perfect stimulus for kids and parents to talk about and learn about science together.

"I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Mad Science and received the products necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate."

49. Ziploc Products for School and Home - Review and Giveaway

Like many children attending school, my daughter helped shop for all the things on her supply list before school began this year. The list included your typical supplies like pencils and crayons, but I was surprised to see Ziploc bags included. Why in the world would the teacher need that many Ziploc bags?

This past Tuesday I volunteered to help out in the classroom, and I learned how she uses some of the Ziploc bags. One of the tasks I performed was to inventory, organize and assemble the literacy "fun" bags so that the kids could start taking them home. The themed literacy bags are totes filled with a book, games and activities and sometimes stuffed animals and the kids take them home to encourage parent involvement in teaching early reading skills and other kindergarten basics. A lot of the totes contain small pieces or things that need to stay together. My daughter's teacher uses the Ziploc bags to keep all the pieces together. Some of the literacy bags even contain bubbles, watercolor paints, and glue! Those items need to be contained in strong and dependable bags so that they don't spill all over and make a big mess. Ziploc bags and literacy? Who knew? But, it's definitely something I'm willing to support!

We use a lot of different Ziploc products in our home so I was very happy to receive several different products to review as part of a Family Review Network blogging opportunity. Ziploc sent us four different products:
· Ziploc Brand sandwich bags
· Ziploc Brand Freezer slider bags with expandable bottom and smart-zip seal (quart)
· Ziploc Brand Storage slider bags with expandable bottom and smart-zip seal (quart)
· Ziploc Brand Containers with the Smart Snap™ Seal (medium square)

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the sandwich bags so they probably don't need much description. However, this is the first time I've tried out the expandable Ziploc slider bag. Both the freezer and storage bags have a special folded bottom that expands out so that the bags stay upright when you fill them. The bags are also roomi

50. Molding Farm Animals with the Moon Dough Barn - Product Review

Exploration through tactile play is an important part of childhood. My kids especially love it when I bring out the play dough. They roll and shape it into interesting forms and like the way it feels when they squish and knead it between their fingers. Playing with dough improves motor skills and encourages creativity.

Recently, thanks to an opportunity provided by Team Mom, we had the chance to try a new kind of moldable dough called Moon Dough. It is a very lightweight, dry and crumbly dough that easily compresses into shapes. And, according to the manufacturer, it never dries out, is hypo-allergenic, and is wheat-free.

We received the Moon Dough Barn product to test and review. The large plastic barn is actually a crank driven toy that molds the dough into four different animal shapes: cow, sheep, horse or chicken. The barn requires some minor assembly before kids can play with it.

Besides the main barn pieces, the set comes with the following items:
3 packages of Colored Moon Dough, Removable Barn Silo, Fence Mold, Hale Bale Mold, Small Play Mat, Instruction Guide

The lightweight dough is a very different product to work with than your typical play dough and feels really interesting to squish and compress. My kids had fun trying to form the Moon Dough into balls, placing it into the hay and bale molds and liked crumbling it into bits. They also really, really enjoyed pressing the dough into the top compartment of the barn and turning the crank to create the various animals one by one. Oftentimes they were in such a hurry to make an animal that they didn't put enough dough into the mold compartment and didn't fully compress it before cranking so they would end up with half-formed animals.

This is a fairly messy activity so I decided to let the kids play with the dough outside to simplify clean up. The dough does end up everywhere because it is so lightweight and it tracks easily. I think that adult supervision is necessary for kids who use this product. Care needs to be taken if you don't want the different dough colors to mix. In my opinion the play mat is a little on the small size (the manufacturer suggests covering the play surface with a plastic sheet or disposable table cloth). If my kids played with in indoors, I think I'd invest in a shallow tub to help contain the play.
