28. Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Today we have a guest post from an awesome friend of Reagan's, Olivia! We're hoping that Olivia will write many more reviews for us!!  If you haven't read Beautiful Creatures, you may want to read that before reading this review.  For a review of Beautiful Creatures, you can check out Amy's review on Reading Teen!

Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 512 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers; 1 edition (October 12, 2010)

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

-Down underneath the magic, romance and action is something else . . . Beauty

Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl are the queens of fantasy and romance.
Regret, loss, sorrow, happiness, and hope together makes something wonderful!
Beautiful Darkness is perfect for anyone who loves romance and adventure. The
second book in a series Beautiful Darkness is one of the best books that I have ever
read. I t is the perfect followup to the first book. Beautiful Creatures. I felt a connection
to Lena like I have never felt with any other character in any other book. I can feel her
sadness and her grief. What lengths will she go to to try to save everyone from her,
including herself?

29. Short Story Of Troll's-Eye View Wizard's Apprentice By Delia Sherman

Troll's-Eye View: A Book of Villainous Tales
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 208 pages
Publisher: Firebird (August 5, 2010)

Buy The Book: Amazon.com

Everyone thinks they know the real story behind the villains in fairy tales--evil, no two ways about it. But the villains themselves beg to differ. In Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling's new anthology for younger readers, you'll hear from the Giant's wife ("Jack and the Beanstalk"), Rumplestiltskin, the oldest of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, and many more. A stellar lineup of authors, including Garth Nix, Holly Black, Neil Gaiman and Nancy Farmer, makes sure that these old stories do new tricks!

What I am going to do is do small reviews on all of the story's of: The Troll's Eye View. 1st story is: The Wizards Apprentice! here is my review:
In the 1st story there is Nick and he was treated very poorly at is uncle's house. He barley got any food. He  really only got like 2 hours of sleep! Sometimes he did not eat at all or sleep at all! So he ran away and his uncle caught him. But one night he ran away and did not get caught and he went to the evil Wizards Book Shop and stayed there. Will his uncle find him or will he stay at the Wizards  Shop?

My favorite person is Nick cause he is brave! i am not a big fan of the story but it was ok.

He holds the secret that can end the world.

The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life.

The records show that he died in 1418.

But his tomb is empty.

The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it.

Sometimes legends are true.

My Review

So, the first thought that came to mind upon picking up this book was, "Michael Scott isn't smart enough to write a good book!" My second thought was, "This dude stole Nicholas Flamel from Harry Potter!" Later discoveries proved both of these statements false. It just so happens that Nicholas Flamel was a real dude, born in the 1300s, renowned for his skills in "Alchemy". Also, Michael Scott (Not the Steve Carell character, as I had thought) is not only smart enough to write a book, he can also do it greatly.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for over a year now, and somehow, I've never given it much thought. Something that I really don't like is when a book sits on a shelf, gathering dust. What's the point of a book if it isn't gonna be read? I can proudly and honestly say that I have almost read all of the two hundred books in my bedroom. 0 Comments on Book Review: The Alchemyst by Michael Scott as of 1/1/1900

31. Audiobook Review: The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

Reading level: Ages 9-12
Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: HarperCollins (May 25, 2004)
Buy The Book: Paperback, Audio

Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnaped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle -- aka the Wee Free Men -- a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny. Together they battle through an eerie and ever-shifting landscape, fighting brutal flying fairies, dream-spinning dromes, and grimhounds -- black dogs with eyes of fire and teeth of razors -- before ultimately confronting the Queen of the Elves, absolute ruler of a world in which reality intertwines with nightmare. And in the final showdown, Tiffany must face her cruel power alone....

In a riveting narrative that is equal parts suspense and humor, Carnegie Medalist Terry Pratchett returns to his internationally popular Discworld with a breathtaking tale certain to leave fans, new and old, enthralled.

So I liked Tiffany and the Wee Free Men the most cause the Wee Free Men are funny and Tiffany is brave and she is never surprised or sad or gives up. I only kind-of liked it cause in some points it is hard to understand what is going on. I liked it cause it was funny and the monsters and things.

'Crivens! Whut aboot us, ye daftie!'

The Wee Free Men were always saying the funniest things, and they had crazy names like Rob Anybody and No'-As-Big-As-Medium-Jock-But-Bigger-Than-Wee-Jock-Jock.  They were brave and would fight anyone at any time, but they were scared to DEATH of lawyers!!!  They are also know as the Nac Mac Feegle and they are little blue pixies.  NO, NOT PIXIES.....PICTSIES!  Don't get that wrong.  They were thrown out of fairyland for being drunk and disorderly, and now they cause trouble by fighting, and stealing sheep.  But when the Queen of the Fairies kidnaps Tiffany's pesky little brother, the Wee Free Men do whatever they can to help her get him back (even if their ways do end up causing a whole lot of trouble).

My Review

Okay, so I went into this book with high hopes and expectations. Which is completely natural because of the impression that the first book of this series, A Measure of Disorder, gives you. And, I must say that this book, which I have waited for and highly anticipated is just about everything I hoped it would be, and more. This epic story continues in a way that I didn't expect and had me hanging on to every word. I flew through the pages, faster and faster until I suddenly realized that there were only about ten pages left in the book. And, as strange as it may seem, I paused in reading it. Not because I wanted to, but because I had realized that the book was about to be over. A thought that greatly saddened me. The reason for this being that I didn't want this book to end because it was just so good. Though, this pause only lasted for a few minutes because I couldn't stand not reading it.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316113662

In enormous lettering the first page warns: "Do not read beyond this page!" The reason? The book contains a secret so nefarious as to be dangerous even to innocent page-turners daring enough to venture forth. The first few chapters present a tricky little exercise in metafiction in which the story about a secret is revealed as being itself too secret to tell, a ploy sure to tickle more puzzlesome readers. But then the intrusive narrator, who is equal parts snarky and delightful, strikes a deal and deigns to tell the story with fake names in Your Hometown, as long as you agree to "forget everything you read as soon as you read it." Then follows a not terribly shocking story wherein two intrepid kids uncover a mysterious society bent on immortality, which gets them in and out of all manner of trouble.

My Review...

I liked this book a lot. It was one of the funniest books I have ever read before. It sometimes reminded me of The Series of Unfortunate Events series because it had a creepy kind of humor that was always keeping me laughing. I love the sense of mystery and that the author (whoever he might be) is always  putting in words of his own. And little footnotes at the bottom of the pages where he will kinda clear something up that is top-secret. I had a lot of fu

43. Thank You

This past Saturday, I visited the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to read a selection from "Lymeria" to patients.
It was really fun to be there and play with the kids. (I can't believe I lost that Care-Bear Memory Matching Game twice!)
It made me happy to know that everyone was able, if for just a few moments, to travel with me to the magical world of Lymeria.
I would like to say thank you to everyone that was there: the administration of CHOP, the staff, but especially the kids.....you know who your are...for allowing me this opportunity. I hope you enjoy the rest of the book and that Lymeria becomes a special place for you as it is for me.
I hope to come back soon. (Maybe next time I'll win that game.....)
