Jhonen Vasquez is a comics superstar, with a huge fan base for his dark gothic creations, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, which ran as a comics from Slave Labor, and Invader Zim, a cartoon on Nickelodeon. His profile has been pretty quiet of late, but that should change quickly with Invader Zim coming back in comics form from Oni in July. The comic will be written and drawn by Vasquez and published in conjunction with Nickelodeon.

The new series has been heavily teased on social media and was announced today at ComcisPRO.

The new series will follow Invader Zim and his robot sidekick GIR as they try to fit in on Earth while planning to conquer the world. The cartoon debuted in 2001 and while it was a cult favorite, didn’t get huge numbers. However now with more personal animation statements having huge success, it can be seen as something WAYYYY ahead of its time.

“I’m always confused when people say how much they miss Invader Zim because the show never stopped running in my head, and then I remember everyone else isn’t in my head,” said show creator Jhonen Vasquez in a statement. “I try to imagine the world for all those people who don’t know what Zim’s been up to since the show went off the air and it makes me shudder. How can people live that way? Hopefully this comic helps make the world a better place.”

This is pretty awesome news all around.
