I'd like to shout out a huge thank you to everyone who showed up to the gallery show on Saturday night. The turnout was awesome! Waves of people came in all throughout the night and we sold a bunch of books, some artwork, and now it's on to the auction starting Monday next week! I've got a bunch of other stuff on my plate as I frantically try to keep on top of this whole auction thing so excuse me while I keep this post brief. Here are a few images on the night....
This was a 17 foot mural I printed out off of my computer. It was a last minute idea. It took me $65 worth of ink, 160 sheets of paper, and 4 rolls of scotch tape. It was a pain in the butt to make but, in the end, I was glad I did it....
Here are other pics....
Tomorrow I will announce which pieces will be appearing in auctions 1 and 2.
Thanks Again!

With preparation for the EYEWITENESS REPORTS show in full effect I was digging through old sketchbooks and looking to find what I could frame to show in the gallery and I thought I'd share some of my thoughts about why the main character on OH NO! was a girl.
My wife and I have two spunky young boys ages 4 and a half and 1 and a half. We don't plan on having any more children, but the question always came up as to what our children would have looked like if one of them was a girl.
For the most part I swapped out features between my wife and I and tried different combinations. She definitely has my wife's nose. The shape of her head is more roundish like mine. She has a combination of our hair (it's a dark brown like my kids) but she styles it like my wife does (not so much the pig tails but pulling it back when she's working with a few wisps peeking out in the front)
I gave her my wife's eyebrows (God only knows how awkward she would be with mine) and her sensibility of clothing comes from my wife's need to make her cute (thus shopping at places such as Gap, Urban Outfitters, and Children's Place) and my need to make sure she would be properly covered (the most likely over protective part of me having a daughter) She's left handed like me (she points with her left hand, she picks up the frog out of the jar with her left hand, she throws away the first place ribbon with her left 'dominant' hand, etc) Lastly, the glasses were thrown in there as a nod to my wife who often wears glasses while she works in her science lab.
So there you have it. The daughter my wife and I never had and what I imagined she would look like.
In any case, these sketches and others will be for sale at the EYEWITNESS REPORTS show tomorrow night. Hope to see you all there.

So I hope to see you at the show on Saturday. Unfortunately, I have to admit I will be there an hour late because I have to attend a 4 year olds birthday party but I will be there and I hope you folks stick around or plan accordingly so I can see your faces.
I'm framing prints that I have made as well as digging up old sketches from my sketchbook to sell at the show. This piece for example was a sketch I rejected for the line in the book, "I should have taught it how to read."
More on all the artwork for sale tomorrow. I think you'll like the story about how I came up with the look for the girl. I think it will melt your heart as it did my wife's. At least, I hope you'll enjoy it...
... Just check back tomorrow will ya?

As a parent I can relate to the frustrations many parents must have in finding any decent place to help educate their kids. Here in California we suffer from state budget cuts and schools continue to suffer from even more budget cuts when they already have nothing left to lose. So I gathered up some friends. A little over 30 children's book artists (any more and my head would have exploded), and they did their own interpretations of Mac's book "OH NO! (Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World)"and starting August 23rd people can begin buying pieces off of eBay. (There will be two auctions, one starting August 23rd, and another starting on August 30th. There will also be a gallery show where all the pieces will be on display at the Nucleus Gallery starting August 14th. I will also be selling very limited edition prints from the book to go towards the charity as well as copies of the book itself.

Ripple is an online art fundraiser in support of the wildlife devastated by the BP oil disaster.Motorcycle bikers have Sturgis. Hippies and ravers have Burning Man. I have the San Diego Comic Con. This year, for me, was all about devising a promotional plan of action for next year when my graphic novel comes out....and getting free stuff. Here's a quick summary of highlights from the past three days....
I stopped by a friends house to pick him up and go to the convention center. I noticed my friend had this 'cheese knife' which looked to me like it was made for a Klingon. I hadn't even received my badge and already the world was going completely nuts....
Every year the crowd situation is out of control. Though, for some reason, it seemed a bit more manageable to me this year. Here's a few images of how crowded it got...
This year was definitely the year of the Scott Pilgrim comic and author Bryan Lee O' Malley who won an Eisner for his work on Saturday night. Everywhere I looked it was Scott Pilgrim this and Scott Pilgrim that. Bryan was a nice fellow. I couldn't be happier for a guy...
My pals Bob Boyle, James Burks and Kyle Neswald had a booth in the small press section of the convention floor. James showed off his new graphic novel coming out this September from Yen Publishing called "Gabby and Gator"...
Bob, James, and my wingman for the festivities and Eisner nominated author-Jarrett Krosoczka

I've been hearing great things from various people online in the last few weeks about how much they love OH NO! many of which come from everyday bloggers who post kind reviews about the book.
I would like to thank the following blogs....
BOOK AUNTSEVEN IMPOSSIBLE THINGS BEFORE BREAKFAST
ALL THE GOOD FOLKS ON GOODREADS
and last but not least....
The last one holds a special place in my heart because the author of the blog, Aaron Zenz, let his children review the book and they drew cute pictures such as this one...
I love when kids draw, so much so that I drew this for them while in Hawaii...
Expect this one in your mailbox soon 'Children of Zenz'!
And thanks again to all the blogging community for getting the word out!

ICON 6 is the huge annual conference for illustrators all across the country. This year it's in my back yard of Pasadena, CA! I'll be one of the speakers at this years conference talking about making videos a promoting yourself through the internet. The presentation is at 9AM-12PM tomorrow at the Langham Hotel.
I have to talk for THREE HOURS about this stuff?!
I haven't been so nervous in my life.
Here's a quick video portfolio I threw together to show as a demo.

Every time I turn on the TV this kid is on it somewhere, so much so that I drew this from memory as a five minute warm up. Hey, I didn't draw it to be mean or anything, I'm happy for the kid. I think I just drew it because I'm so mesmerized by the hair helmet.

I just got back from a week long vacation with the family to Kawaii and I return to a huge list of things to do, but, like most people who look at their pile of work with fresh eyes you wonder "Where do I start?"
I think I'm gonna start with a blog post...
I'll just spout off some interesting highlights.
1. The four year old son became obsessed with Air Canada while at the airport. he was immediately enamored with the maple leaf logo on the tail of the plane. The question most often asked during the whole trip was "Does Air Canada fly to Hawaii?"
2. The one year old was terrified of flying for the first time. A tiny bit of Benadryl is great stuff to help take the edge off of things (though he still clutched onto me like a Spider Monkey throughout the whole flight)
3. In Hawaii, the Farmer's Market is amazing. Since I like to try new things I bought this unusual fruit called a Sop. Verdict? It tastes like the love child of a banana and a peach, though everyone else who tried it with me didn't agree.
4. Children and swimming. The best way to learn, as with anything else in life, is by doing.
5. We befriended a wild rooster which the family named 'Freckles'. I referred to him as 'Zankou' after my favorite Armenian rotisserie chicken restaurant here in LA. By the way, roosters love Cheerios.
6. While on the island they were filming Pirates of the Carribean 4 off of the Napali Coast. Here we are on the opposite side of the mountains where they were filming. This was a taro field where they filmed "The Killing Fields" Try explaining all that to your kids.
7. I found that observing tide pools with the kids was far more interesting than snorkeling.
8. There are a lot of ugly tattoos out there in the world.
9. One should always try to have
