Last year I worked with Damn Fine Media, a company that specialises in quirky video projects which incorporate live action and stop motion animation.
This film was for TES, a propular education and teacher resource here in the UK, and it advertises some of the features of their online TES PRO service.
It was a very quick turnaround and I created the artwork ( characters, backgrounds, etc) in just couple of days. They were then printed and cut out by hand.
If you watch the video you will see there was a lot of different heads and arms involved. We filmed it pretty swiftly in half a day and those are my (nervous) hands on show!

It was a really interesting project to work on and since finishing it, I have taken a night class in traditional puppet-based stop motion animation. It's a fascinating activity but am yet to be convinced that I have the meticulous and patient approach required for such work.
...As you can see in my first animation (test)!

Now why do so many people seem to loathe this day?
Among other recent lifestyle changes, I've decided to ignore the negative attitude and commercial cynicism that is attached to the 14th and am embracing the joy that is Valentine's Day.

Happy V-day Friends! Have a good one. And remember gents, no petrol station carnations.

hope this isn't drop cap overkill to also post my contribution to Jessica Hische's awesome lettering project at www.dailydropcap.com.
I spend most of my working hours doing lettering these days but I really never have the luxury of time or indeed the requirement to focus on decorating just one letter so this was a nice change. I would say I actually found it quite *fun*.
Thanks Jess for the invite and your kind words in the write up. Really enjoying seeing everyones contributions too.
Last month I worked with Katherine Botes at Saatchi & Saatchi, Cape town and contibuted some hand lettering to their latest campaign for the Save Our Seas foundation, a non profit organisation that works to preserve marine creatures and their environment.
Saatchi & Saatchi have a long standing relationship with the foundation and this latest campaign, "The Ocean speaks out" took place over three days at Muizenberg beach, C.T.
Day One: The team collect a number of large shells which are then fitted with a mini speaker and are placed back on the beach early in the morning for people to find later in the day. On holding the shell to your ear, a plea for help from the sea is heard and listeners are directed to the SOS website.

Day Two: Another early start for the team. On this day, beach goers discovered messages in weathered bottles that had appeared to have washed ashore. Inside the bottles were handwritten letters from different sea creatures asking for help.

Five illustrators including myself (Ray Frenden, Cristina Guitian, Toby Newsome and Alex Latimer ) created the typography for each letter... Here's my letter from "Shawn the Prawn".

Day Three: Probably the most "dramatic" element... a coffin appears on the beach with a sobering message on the front...
