Recently, a friend of mine joined The Classics Club, and it piqued my interest. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the classics – memories of being forced to wade through dry, boring texts at school war with memories of passionate readings of Treasure Island and The Three Musketeers. Deciding I needed a new challenge … Continue reading »

It has certainly been a busy year. It was only around June this year that I got ‘serious’ about writing again. I’ve tinkered around with it on and off, just for myself, since I was a kid, but never dreamed of doing it seriously, then my best mate wrote a novel draft or two, got … Continue reading »

Susanna Leonard Hill’s Holiday Writing Contest is in its third year, though this is my first year of participating. The 3rd Annual Holiday Contest!!! The Contest: Write a children’s story about a Holiday Mishap, mix-up, miscommunication, mistake, or potential disaster (a la Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer :)). Your story may be poetry or prose, silly or … Continue reading »

I signed up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) for the first time this year – and managed to fail completely at completing the challenge. However, I’m still happy with what I achieved, though it isn’t anywhere near enough to get me the NaNo tick of approval. The NaNo target is 50,000 words – 1,667 … Continue reading »

http://www.postcardshorts.com/read-2097.html The story I submitted, The Red Shoe, was culled from a longer short story which was an exercise in playing around with description – trying to use expressive, lyrical language to describe a rather depressing scene. If you’re in the mood for a bit of micro fiction, you’ve come to the right place. Postcard Shorts … Continue reading »

What is PiBoIdMo you ask? It’s the cool shorthand for Picture Book Idea Month, a fabulous initiative begun by children’s author Tara Lazar. Tired of novelists having all the fun in November with NaNoWriMo, I created PiBoIdMo as a 30-day challenge for picture book writers. The challenge is to create 30 picture book ideas in … Continue reading »

Question of the day: I’m so torn when it comes to this question because three settings instantly leap to mind: A beach hut on an isolated, wind swept peninsula . My desk sits before a giant picture window which looks out across the white sands to the sea. An isolated mountain cabin, snowed in. There’s … Continue reading »

After a pretty rough few months, I was thrilled to receive my first acceptance email last week. It’s just a very short piece on a non-paying book review website but it’s a start! The story is called Yellow Brick Road and will feature in November on the Kid’s Book Review website. http://www.kids-bookreview.com/ Kids’ Book Review … Continue reading »

Even though I’m still working on the first draft of my MG novel, being a visual person I wanted to create a cover for the book. I pictured this cover printed out, pinned on the motivational board above my desk, urging me on (along with pots of Earl Grey) to get this draft written. In … Continue reading »

As I work on my novel, there is lots of advice I try to keep in mind, as well as many quotes that inspire me & keep my fingers tap-tap-tapping away. None works quite so well as this though: My current goal is to write one chapter per day – around 1000 words for … Continue reading »

I’ve rediscovered an old love of mine lately, namely creative writing. I loved writing at school and spent hours as a child creating amazingly intricate and complicated tales both in my head and on paper; interweaving them with reality and fantasy. Unfortunately I kept nothing from those years, ruthlessly stripping keepsakes and belongings as I … Continue reading »

It sounds like you’ve done a lot for 2013. Your plans for 2014 are exciting. I’ve been talking about goals with my critique group. We each want to get published and we want the other members in our group to get published. We’re very supportive of each other. Mutual accountability works well for me. Sounds like it does for you as well. May you have a productive and happy 2014. Merry Christmas.
I need to log in on my current blog instead of my old one.
I think support is the way to go, when it comes to writing a win for one writer is a win for all. I must be channelling the three musketeers.
Thank you and I hope you have a great Christmas and happy and productive new year as well Gale.
This one takes me to Visions & Revisions – have you a different address now?
You seems to have the most amazing year, lots of achievements and successes! I am looking forward to another year of back and forward critiques on Scribophile!
Cheers Yvonne, it has definitely been a positive start to the writing life. There will definitely be lots more Scribophile interaction I hope. Thank you for all your crits & support throughout the year.
Way to go!!! You’ve had a fantastic first 6 months. The next will be even better! (Big smiley finger to that.)
Haha…getting this message on my phone the ‘big smiley finger’ reference threw me, til I remembered my blog pic. It’s mostly thanks to your nagging. Let’s concentrate on getting this YA novel accepted somewhere….so the REAL work can begin!
Yes, Visions and Revisions is the good one. I must probably destroy the old one to get it out of my hair.
