Winning in politics is often bizarre, drawn out, incremental, and ultimately a surprise. As such, winning often doesn't feel that good. But I think it's very important to take a bit of time when it happens to enjoy it.
And also to recognize that the win would not have happened without the people who worked hard to lobby and bug their congresspeople and force a decision down the throat of a bunch of unhappy corporations. So thank you so much to everyone who campaigned to keep the internet neutral.

I love this video. I love nerdy kids. I love nerdy adults. I am 73, a former teacher, a present-day learner. A wanna-be nerd! However, I could take apart and look at this machine for a year and still not understand how it works. It is beautiful. Brothers, keep up the good work. I so look forward to hearing from you every Tuesday and Friday. mjo
John, I don’t ever comment on videos but this one prompts a response. I’m studying to be an English teacher and last fall I spent time out in a classroom. I wish I could go back right now and show them this video. This was exactly what I was trying to get my students to understand. My kiddos were sophomores in high school and you could see that some of them have given up already. Sophomores. I wish they could see that their life course isn’t determined by the grades they get in high school. If I get to be with these kids again, I’m going to find a way to put this into a lesson. Even if they aren’t making the best choices or getting the best grades right now, I don’t want them to think that they have to be stuck in that rut for the rest of their life. It doesn’t have to define them. And I’m sure they would be more willing to listen to a successful author rather than their weirdo student teacher. (Or this will all backfire and they’ll take this as inspiration to skip my class and smoke. I guess it’s a good thing that there are no woods anywhere near the school for them to smoke in.)

2 Comments on Why Are Fewer People Studying Science and Engineering?, last added: 2/21/2015
Here in Britain, lots of people talk about improving science education and getting more scientists. But most of the people I know who went into science and engineering thirty or more years ago spent a long time on pretty ordinary salaries and got laid off. While those who studied accountancy or business mostly did well and are headed for a comfortable retirement, if they haven’t retired already.
For somebody getting educated now, they see less jobs using science than thirty years ago, the salaries are lower and the workloads they are expected to produce are heavier. If there were really a shortage of science people you would expect higher salaries and offers of training posts in companies – but the opposite is true. There are less jobs offered and lower salaries. If a teenage relative of mine asked if it was worth getting a science education I would say: “No way – study accounts.” Wouldn’t you?

Alan,
I understand that you must be from Britain, but I think Hank is more focused on the US in this video because it needs more scientists. I am from America, and my family always told me to be an engineer because you’re a woman and we need more female engineers-and just plain more engineers. In fact, I think that engineers are starting to replace a lot of architects, and engineers have more and more opportunities in America every day. It’s just Britain and America are different places with different needs right now.
I just wrote this up really quickly because I’ve never seen Hank or John reply on this forum, so I thought I’d give you some sort of answer. The US and Britain are just facing different issues and currently, therefore, value different occupations.

I would delight in nothing more than to improve my writings with help from a beloved author that my former and current schools admire greatly. (I recently moved. There are many fans of yours at my current school.) Please email me or reply if you happen to notice my commentary. I love all of your work and I only have one more to go (“Let It Snow”). In which John Green talks about Paper Towns, Agloe New York, the strange relationship between the real and the fictional, and the great gift of seeing the imagined become real.

In which Hank edits together a ton of the best moments from this year's Project for Awesome. Of course, no one can be there for all of it but, this way, you can catch a glimpse! I'd like to edit together some of the more intriguing episodes, but this will have to do for now.
Thank you all so much for your giving your time, talent, and/or money. The Project for Awesome really is unique in the world of giving, and the charities we give to are always so astounded and enthused by what is often surprising but very needed money.
Thank you all. I'm so pleased to be a part of this community.
