27. Review for Lights, Camera, Stilton! by Geronimo Stilton New Graphic Novel

Lights, Camera, Stilton! by Geronimo Stilton
Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novels (Book 16)
Papercutz
August 4th, 2015
ISBN-10: 1629912085
ISBN-13: 978-1629912080
Ages 7-12 years old
56 Pages

Ever wondered about the birth of movies? In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the Cinematograph. The two engineers created something that was completely new for their time: a machine that could shoot, develop, and above all, project images. They were credited for inventing the movies.

Like many of the Geronimo Stilton books, there is always something new to learn that will engage and educate readers. In this case the story focuses on the Lumiere brothers and their first attempt at a movie. But they did not know that they were being sabotaged by the pirate cats. The pirate cats wished to be the ones to be recognized for this amazing accomplishment in film. With the help of Professor Von Volt, Geronimo Stilton, Thea, Trap, and Benjamin go back in time to stop the pirate cats from changing history.

Geronimo fans will love reading the 56-page graphic novel Light, Camera, Stilton! though fans of the books will find some differences between reading Geronimo Stilton graphic novels and the Geronimo Stilton books. In the graphic novels many things carry over from one graphic novel to the next so if the reader didn’t read the other graphic novels they might miss some of the references implied. In the graphic novels there seems to be a different tone that is portrayed from Geronimo. In the books he can be funny and silly, with the plot adventurous or mysterious in some way. In the graphic novels the tone is definitely more serious, though adventure or mystery is central and wrapped around a historical event, and of course the characters look a little different.

The great thing about the graphic novel series is that they tend to have separate plots than the books, which is great for the readers and brings diversity. None of the stories are shortened or illustrated versions of the books. They each are unique and have different settings, plots, and educational value. Children who love history, and Geronimo Stilton, will like what this series teaches them.

This is a great story filled with mystery and ciphers. It is challenging for the advanced reader, yet interesting and action filled for the reluctant reader.

Here is a review from Amazon's kindle version:

Children between 4th-7th grades are going to love The Crypto-Caper Series. The author does an amazing job involving the reader into the story. The mystery takes the reader to Russia where they will learn about Peter the Great as well as many other historical figures and topics. The reader will use different clues to solve the puzzles in the books. Book 1 through book 4 uses a Substitution Cipher to solve the puzzles, but in books 5 and 6, the author uses an Ottendorf Cipher. Children are always being challenged in each book, which will keep them interested and engaged. This book has won a Preferred Choice Award and it is easy to see why. Readers, teachers, and parents are going to love the smooth way the author keeps the reader's attention by introducing puzzles and history into a well woven mystery.

31. Interview with Madhuri Blaylock for The Girl (Book 1 in The Sanctum Series)

Come and join me as I talk with author Madhuri Blaylock about Book 1 in The Sanctum Series The Girl on Stories From Unknown Authors http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors at 1pm EST today.

Summary:

The Sanctum, an all-powerful governing body founded by ten families, entrusted to maintain the peace amongst Magicals and ensure the ignorance of humans, has been corrupted by greed and savagery for generations, but is all Wyatt Clayworth has ever known. A descendant of one of the Founding Families and Class A Warrior, Wyatt has always believed in the ways of The Sanctum, having grown up in the system and thrived under their leadership. A golden boy, renowned for his prowess and skill in battle, Wyatt has never questioned a mission or kill order until the night he crosses paths with a brutally injured and mysterious girl. Scouring Central Park with his best friend and fellow Class A Warrior, Ryker Morrison, for the hybrid demon prophesied to bring an end to The Sanctum and destroy the world for Magicals and humans alike, Wyatt instead finds Dev and his whole life turns upside down. Told he was hunting a killing machine, hellbent on wreaking havoc and destruction upon all it encounters, Wyatt instead sees nothing more than a broken girl with haunted eyes and a bit of a death wish. All Dev wants is for Wyatt to either kill her or leave her alone. When he refuses to do either, she finds herself being pulled into his life while being hunted by warriors everywhere she turns. Drawn to one another for reasons they cannot begin to explain to themselves, much less anyone else, Wyatt is determined to protect Dev and help her realize her mission to avenge the deaths of her family at the hands of The Sanctum. His abdication of his duties and his outright rejection of his responsibilities to The Sanctum create a maelstrom of events beyond anyone’s imagination.

Review:
This novel is filled with adventure as it flows steadily towards the revelation of The Girl and her amazing powers. Readers are going to love how the story sucks them in, making them want to know more about Wyatt and Dev and their journey together for which they are forever bonded. The characters are unique as they are beautiful. Though at times the characters seem a little too perfect, they are fun in talents and personality.

With devoted friends and family, Dev and Wyatt go on an incredible journey, yet not realizing the bigger picture they both are apart of. Will their bond last? Readers will definitely want to find out in this 400 page novel.

Biography:
I'm that Indian girl everyone thinks is Black...or Spanish...or Black and Spanish. I'm from down South, have lived in the New York City area for more than twenty years, and am proof that you can take the girl out of the South, but you can't take the South out of the girl.

I love Old Scout bourbon, french fries, tattoos, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, my mom's Indian food, Friday Night Lights, coffee, and Martha's Vineyard. I can wiggle my ears, flare my nostrils, and curl my tongue.

I am an introvert who can fool people into thinking I am an extrovert, all the while wishing I was home alone, not having to speak to a soul, lost in a fantastical world of my own creation.

32. Review for Ellie Makes A New Friend by Marci Fair

About Ellie Makes A New Friend:
Mom's Choice Gold Award Winner! A beautiful blend of real life and make-believe, The Amazing Adventures of Ellie the Elephant series recounts the everyday life of a stuffed animal. The debut book, Ellie Makes a New Friend, follows the plush elephant as she moves to a new neighborhood and has to find a new playmate.
Written and photographed by mother Marci Fair and her ten-year-old daughter Elle Fair, the story is uniquely illustrated with delightful photos of the little elephant’s journeys through the neighborhood as she tries to settle into her new home. Children will love seeing a toy living in a real-world setting, and parents and teachers will appreciate Ellie’s positive and creative approach to finding answers to her problems.
Fun, playful, and packed with imagination, you won’t want to miss the upcoming adventures of Ellie—and her new friend!

About the Authors:

Mother-daughter duo Marci Fair and Elle Fair coauthor a series of books about ten-year-old Elle’s two favorite stuffed animals, Ellie the Elephant and Pudgy the Penguin. Even as a working mother of four, Marci has always made time to read bedtime stories to her kids and encouraged them to read on their own, as well. A big fan of books and stuffed animals both, Elle enjoys working on this special project with her mom.
In addition to her professional career, Marci is the founder of Kares 4 Kids, a nonprofit organization that has served over 18,000 children in need since 2005. She is also the author of the award-winning book TILT: 7 Solutions to Be a Guilt-Free Working Mom, liberating other women with her hard-won wisdom—“Balance is impossible; memories are better.”

Review:
Ellie Makes A New Friend is about a stuffed animal named Ellie who moves into a new neighborhood looking for a new friend. She gets some yogurt and goes to the playground, but she feels alone. After doing several activities by herself she goes to the library and reads books about making friends. When she goes back to the playground she meets a penguin named Pudgy. They then begin to do everything together.

This is a simple story about friendship. In this case when Ellie met Pudgy she found out that Pudgy loves to do everything that she likes to do. She met the perfect friend for her. Many children will be able to relate to Ellie's plight and have been in a similar situation when moving to a new neighborhood. In the back of the book the authors ask the readers to send in pictures of their special friends to facebook. Many children will love to do that. My only quibble is that the pages look like a scrapbook project. The pictures are of the real stuffed animals but the backgrounds are too cluttered with other pictures and colors. At times there's a lot going on that can distract attention away from the story. The story is short and simple, so should be the illustrations and backgrounds.

Overall, young children will enjoy reading this 28 page picture book.

33. Interview with Cassie Eubank for Diary of an Ugly Sweater

Come and join me as I talk with author Cassie Eubank about her novel Diary of an Ugly Sweater on Stories From Unknown Authors http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors at 1pm EST today.

Summary:
Have you ever felt alone? Can you remember a time when you thought you weren't good enough? Maybe you have even felt ugly before? Sophie certainly knows how you feel. Sophie was created a Christmas sweater and was feeling on top of the world when she was chosen to be featured in a newspaper ad. For one day, she was shipped off and was the model for a glamorous photo shoot. Her feeling of joy faded when she got back to Warehouse City and had to quickly learn to understand and find the best way to work with all the different personalities of the other sweaters. With compassion and humor, Sophie was able to turn those who started out as adversaries into allies. These were skills she would need when she arrived at the Superstore, the place where her forever person would find her. During her short stay at the store, before Katie purchased her, Sophie had the opportunity to watch and observe human nature in a big way as the masses of holiday shopper descended when the doors opened each day. All of the things she learned would be needed for what was to come. At first, Sophie believed she was the happiest sweater in the world. The perfect forever person had chosen her, and she even heard her talk about going to a Christmas party and being entered into a best sweater contest. Sophie was alive with excitement, especially when she found out that Katie was going to “bling” her out. Oh the glitz, the glam, Sophie was loving it all. First came the garland. Then the blinking lights. Next it was larger ornaments and presents under the tree. Being an over-achiever, Katie also added bells, bows, a purple peacock, a raccoon, an elf, a floating Santa head, an angel and candy canes all over her right arm! Sophie was feeling like a freak show and wondered why her forever person would want to change her so much. Why wasn’t she good enough just the way she was? With the help and support of her new family, Sophie learned some new coping skills that allowed her to grow and gain from the feelings she once had. With these new skills in place, what once seemed overwhelming was now simple and easy. Life was good. Until….. One evening, Sophie and the family that had been attached to her were left on the kitchen table. There before her, Sophie saw things that caused her world to crash in around her. In plain sight, was an invitation to the party she was going to with the prompt to Get Your Ugly On! $100 to the winner of the UGLY SWEATER CONTEST. As her heart sunk, she glanced to the right and saw a newspaper advertisement. What it said made her go numb. There on the open page was a picture of her. It was one that had been taken when she had been sent to model at the photo shoot. UGLY SWEATER SALE the words above her head screamed. She had been created… no, she had been born to be ugly. Her only purpose in life was to be a hideous amusement. Sophie was heart-broken and saw no reason for her worthless, pathetic life. Thanks to the love and understanding of her adopted family, Sophie came to learn her true value. Having come to love herself, she was able to offer those around her so much more, which made her feel even better. She was also able to let her challenges turn her into a champion! Join Sophie as she shares real life solutions to the opportunities for growth that present themselves in our lives. When you delight in these pages, you will come to love Sophie and feel both her trials and her triumphs. Take this journey now and engage in a delightful ride that will capture hearts of all ages during all seasons.

Review:
Diary of an Ugly Sweater is a unique story told by a sweater named Sophie as she makes her journey from warehouse to store to someone's home. Along the way the reader will learn life lessons as Sophie encounters troubles. She also discovers new things about herself. As a sweater on a shelf brand new Sophie is beautiful. She gets a photo shoot and lots of attention. But when she makes it to the store and gets pawed at, tried on, and moved around, she becomes stretched, worn, and damaged. When Sophie thinks no one will want her, her forever person, Katie, comes and buys her. The problem is she bought her for an ugly sweater contest. This news damages her view of herself. The reader will become aborbed in the story feeling the characters ups and downs. The great thing is Sophie learns a lot about life from Katie and how to become a better sweater no matter what she looks like on the outside. For Katie it wasn't just about the contest any more, buying Sophie was about so much more.

This 180 page novel is a delightful story about self worth. The sweater imparts a valuable lesson. We must always be the best version of ourselves we can be. Then we will know we are a person of value, with a life that has purpose. It doesn't matter what somone thinks, it only matters what we think of ourselves. These words are true and will resonate with readers young and old.

About the Author:
Cassi showed a passion for reading and writing at a very young age. In second grade she read over 150 books while maintaining an A average and was first published in the local newspaper for a poem she wrote in the fourth grade.

In college, English was the young scribe's major and Psychology her minor. Being gifted with the ability to communicate, Cassi got a job as a corporate trainer, working with companies such as HMS Host, Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Wynn Casino, Las Vegas, Chili's, Shula's Steakhouse, the US Government and hundreds more. During that time, she still wrote short stories and poems, as well as remaining an avid reader.

In 1990, Cassi wrote, Do You Know Elvis? 501 Questions About the King. It was a fun project and she sold almost 1,000 copies in a weekend, this being before the age of social media.

Cassi has stayed in the field of communications with the television show she produced and hosted on Fox network almost 5 years. Home Grown Music enjoyed almost a quarter million viewers each week. She also was the DJ for an AM radio station for almost 2 years and now hosts Believe & Receive Radio on blogtalk. Once Cassi became a contributing author in the book, Dare to Be Authentic, she decided to put her skills to use and write another book of her own.

With the recent birth of her grandson, she decided to revisit her dream of writing for a younger audience. She understands the mind of a child and believes that if we can show our kids how to remain child-like while learning how to shed childish ways, we will all see a brighter future. Cassi has completed Diary of an Ugly Sweater and is in the process of completing Diary of an Ugly Sweater: the Action Guide. This action guide will allow readers to take the lessons that Sophie learns throughout her journey and apply the solutions to experiences that have or may occur in their own lives.

Ms. Eubank speaks at medium and large engagement on topics that result in success in your business and life. She donates her time to at-risk young people to help them build the self-esteem and life skills they need. When not immersed in a book or behind her computer writing, Cassi loves to garden, cook, and sing. Her greatest passion in life is Elliot, her grandson and family. After that, it's travel that Cassi is passionate about.

35. Review for Operation Bumpkin Birthday by Petrina Khashoggi

Review:

Operation Bumpkin Birthday is a fun and wonderfully illustrated 56 page picture book about a trio of rat brothers, Snitch, Snatch, and Sketch, who are constantly looking for scraps of food to eat down in the subway where they live. Wanting to go on an adventure they come across more food than they would ever know what to do with. But Snatch has an idea that is different than the plan his brothers had come up with, will he be able to pull it off before he gets caught by the Bumpkins?

This story is fun and entertaining for children who are 6-10 years of age. Though the theme of family in encompassed in the book it also shows how Snatch went his own way, following his stomach. Though he had been starving in the subway his new life was much better, or was it? Being without his brothers Snatch realized how much he appreciated and loved them. It did set his priorities a little more in order. Everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too. Snatch just didn't realize until too late that he could have both family and food in his belly.

The illustrations for this book by Michael Graham are brightly colored and artistically done so well that the rats look real enough to touch. They blend with the story well and bring out perfectly the what the author intended. Children will love to look at the pictures and imagine themselves along with the characters.

36. Review for Battle of the Grandmas by Anthonette Klinkerman

Book Summary:

In this story of an extended family, three grandmas accidentally buy the same book for their granddaughter, and they then launch into a gift-purchasing battle for supremacy. The well-intentioned grannies race all over the Internet and town to buy the best present, the one that will win the affections of the child. The poor postman is the one left with delivering gifts of clothes, toys, DVDs, and trinkets until the little girl’s home is packed to the rafters with stuff. Finally the little girl emerges as the voice of reason and points out she cannot wear or play with all of the stuff being bought, but instead wants to spend time making memories with each grandma. In this day and age of families with multitudes of relatives, the message that time is more important than stuff comes through loud and clear.

Review:

Battle of the Grandmas is a great story about a girl who is bombarded with gifts from her three distant grandmas. To many times family members will try buying a child's love, and it happens more often than we think. All of a sudden grandma number 1 is the best because they bought the child everything they wanted. The problem with this mentality is one, the child becomes spoiled, and two, children are intelligent and will soon pick up really quickly on who they will ask to buy them things. In this story, the child didn't ask for the gifts but is given more than what she can play with or even wear. They are items she didn't want.

The author does a great job pointing out that all the girl really needs is to know that she is loved. Time spent with a child is more important than material items, especially as they get older. Hearing them laugh and doing things together is what a child truly remembers, not the items that were given away as presents or to the goodwill. Children of all ages will enjoy this 34 page picture book and the lesson that unfolds.

37. Pay it Forward--Author Cheryl Phipps-Romance Novels

Biography:

As a young mother with three small children, Cheryl Phipps escaped the daily chaos of motherhood through her beloved romance novels. She loved being whisked away from nappies and wiping noses to exotic locations filled with suave heroes and feisty heroines, and wonderful small towns with heart-warming tales of strong family ties and life-affirming true love.

Her bookshelves still hold those favorite authors - Nora Roberts, Marian Keyes and Cathy Kelly - plus new-found favorites who write stories that echo Cheryl's own values: family always comes first and life's struggles and challenges are always surmountable through love.

Cheryl's three children have now grown up and have families of their own, leaving her free to pursue her dreams of writing novels. She lives in a quiet suburb of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, with her wonderful husband, who she married the moment she left school (yes, they were high school sweethearts), and their turtles Rose and Jade. She enjoys taking walks with her husband, dinner out with friends, and, of course, weaving sensual stories that celebrate the joy of love, family and resilience.

Description of Saving Stephanie:

The prodigal son has returned to Prossers Bay to care for his father, and Doctor Jamie Morris has no intention of staying longer than necessary. The gossip surrounding his alcoholic mother, which hounded his childhood, has seen to that. But seeing Stephanie again plays havoc with his heart and his mind. She was always the only woman for him and nothing seems to have changed on that score. He wants her still, but he also wants the future she wanted no part of. He well knows he can’t have both.

Stephanie Green believes she finally has the chance to realise her dream of opening her own café until the bank reneges on a loan and Jamie offers to help her. Taking money from her ex-lover isn’t an option. But there is no other and, like everything he does, Jamie makes the offer too tempting to refuse. She remembers why she loved him, and still does. But that doesn’t mean they can be friends, let alone anything else.

Just as Stephanie makes her decision, Jamie changes the plan once more. Only this time he’s doing it for the right reasons. He’s putting his heart and career on the line. If she’s brave enough to take the required leap of faith, they just might have it all.

Book Description

May 31, 2015
Kay Montanaro is a successful professional who has focused all her efforts on building her career for the last ten years. She had to sacrifice much to achieve her goals including her personal life. She put on weight, lost touch with old friends, and never found the time to date or keep her love life going. Until her best friend couldn’t take it any longer and convinced Kay to rethink her priorities. On a flight to London, she finds exactly what she needs to rekindle her passion – a gorgeous man from her past who is willing to reconnect. But, can David give Kay everything she needs? Is he enough? Does she dare ask for more? WARNING – This 6,800-word short-story portraits two hot alpha males who would do anything to entertain a gorgeous BWW passenger during a long otherwise dull transatlantic flight. Their encounter gets pretty steamy and naughty therefore it’s not recommended for the faint of heart or for those who object to three people finding pleasure together also known as threesomes.

About the Author:

When Liz Gavin was in Second Grade - just a couple of years ago, really - her teacher told her mother the little girl should start a diary because she needed an outlet for her active and vivid imagination. She was a talkative child who would disrupt the class by engaging her colleagues in endless conversations. She loved telling them the stories her grandfather used to tell her. Apparently, the teacher wasn't a big fan of those stories, and Liz's mother bought her a diary. She happily wrote on it for a couple of months. Unable to see the appeal of writing for her own enjoyment only, she gave up on it. She missed the audience her friends provided her in class. She went back to disturbing her dear teacher's class. Since then, she has become a hungry reader. She will read anything and everything she can get her hands on - from the classics to erotica. That's how she has become a writer of erotica and romance, as well. As a young adult, she participated in a student exchange program and lived in New Orleans for six months. She fell in love with the city and its wonderful inhabitants. NOLA will always hold a special spot in Liz Gavin's heart. Nowadays, living in Brazil, Liz's creativity has improved many times because it's such a vibrant, gorgeous and sexy country. Welcome to her world of hot Alpha males and naughty, independent women. Add a touch of the paranormal in the presence of some wicked souls and you'll get the picture. Sit back, fire up your Kindle and enjoy the ride!

40. Interview with Susan Marie Murdoch for Bully Blues

Come and join me as I talk with author Susan Marie Murdoch about her picture book Iwogs Adventures in Bully Blues on Stories From Unknown Authors http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors at 1pm EST today.

Summary:
"Iwogs Adventures in Bully Blues is an enlightening story that brings an awareness of an important issue in today's society, bullying. This book is a must read for every classroom and home. The charming characters emanate the emotions so many children feel and are unable to express."

  • Hardcover: 48 pages
  • Publisher: Goose River Press; First edition (March 2, 2015)
  • ISBN-10: 159713158X
  • ISBN-13: 978-1597131582

Author Bio:
I love being an author & Illustrator of children's books. I grew up on the seacoast of Maine, and have been a resident of Taos, NM for the past three years. My son Tim, and daughter Jacquelyn, have been my foundation through the years and they are my biggest supporters.

I have enjoyed spending over a decade as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in New Hampshire and continues to devote my time as a part-time caregiver to the elderly in the surrounding communities of New Mexico. I am currently a caregiver to the renowned Taos artist Alyce Frank.

Growing up, my passion had always been painting and drawing. It was later in life after experiencing some traumatic events while serving in the Unite States Army as a military police officer, did I learn that writing was a therapeutic tool to express myself. I try to incorporate personal experiences and emotions into my stories in hopes the messages will ring true with the reader.

My latest book, Iwogs Adventures in Bully Blues, is an enlightening story that brings an awareness of an important issue in today's society, bullying. Children can relate to and read about how the Iwogs battle against Snip and Snap, the turtle brothers and learn that with kindness and forgiveness, anything is possible.

My first children's book, Plaid Frogs, Blue Toads & Pink Pollywogs, was designed to help kids with cancer or any childhood disease in search of a cure, be able to discuss their emotions with a parent, teacher or healthcare provider. A portion of the proceeds of Plaid Frogs Blue Toad & Pink Pollywogs, goes to the American Cancer Society.

I believe that children books should have strong ideals and morals, and send a positive message to the young and old!

Review:
Bully Blues is a story about Iwogs who are getting bullied by turtle brothers, Snip and Snap. Snip and Snap kick the Iwogs out of their food bed and tease them about their appearances. Having enough, Corky decides to rally his friends and fellow Iwogs together to see the Grand Unog to get advice on how to deal with the bullies. The wise Unog tells the Iwogs that they all live together in the same pond and they need to find a way to live in harmony with one another. They all need to show patience, kindness, and forgiveness. That advice gets put to the test when Snip and Snap go missing.

This story encompasses the problem of bullying. It doesn't matter where you are, or even your age, bullying is a problem everywhere. Bully Blues, through the story, tells the Iwogs how to stick together and to avoid the turtle brothers. This worked. But the underlining lesson is to also show compassion, which at times, is very hard to do, especially when the person being bullied is emotionally and/or physically dramatized. But children will learn in this 41 page picture book, that with forgiveness comes great rewards and with kindness comes lasting friendships.

42. Review for Blue Ocean Bob by Brooks Olbrys

Join Blue Ocean Bob on his journey to protect all life in the Sea of Kerchoo

Blue Ocean Bob loves the sea and wants to dedicate his life to protecting it. He begins a new job as assistant to Mary Marine, the Island of Roses's leading marine biologist, and with his hummingbird guardian, Xena, by his side, works hard to carry out his duties to the sea creatures both on and off the shore.

When the challenges mount, Bob seeks advice from Doc the turtle, Earl the clam, and Wallace the walrus, who each help him to develop the positive attitude he needs to succeed.

The Adventures of Blue Ocean Bob: A Challenging Job is the second installment in this colorful and inspiring early chapter book series that provides young readers with an introduction to timeless principles of achievement.

About the Author

A graduate of Stanford University, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, and the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, Brooks Olbrys is the founder of Children's Success Unlimited and a managing director at investment bank Ion Partners. He lives with his wife and son in New York City.

From a young age, Kevin Keele has enjoyed creating artwork in many forms: drawing, oil painting, digital painting, even stained glass. His work has been featured in numerous picture books, magazines, board games, and video games. Though he lives far from any coastline, he has always been fascinated by the ocean and enjoys illustrating its various creatures. Kevin is currently an artist for Disney Interactive Studios. He lives in Utah with his wife and two sons. They are the caretakers of one cat, three chickens, and thousands of Italian honeybees.

Review:
This chapter picture book contains 5 different chapters. The first is Helping Hand where Bob must help a seal learn to feed in the deep. When he succeeds in his goal the short chapter is over and it flows into the next day where Bob must now help a pelican stuck in a net. In the third chapter Bob must warn the sea life that a storm is coming to the island. Chapter 4 is a Simple Reminder of why Bob wanted to become a marine assistant when he has a bad day and nothing goes right. Chapter 5 is Diving Deep, Bob must help a stingray thats stuck deep in the ocean.

The story is written in rhyme and runs smoothly throughout the story.  Each chapter teaches a good lesson to the reader. The reader learns about confidence, responsibility, communication, gratitude, and success. The illustrations by Kevin Keele are amazing. He does a fabulous job that will immediately engage the reader. His illustrations are realistic, colorful, and true. Readers will feel like they are apart of the story along with the characters.

The characters are from the original book in the series. They carry over into book 2 to help Bob along with his journey. The characters are supportive and encouraging, except for one. Xena is Bob's guardian, and though guardians are meant to keep us safe and and be our reasoning, Xena is constantly negative. She is everyone's subconscious, the thing that holds us back from doing what we really want by showing us the reality, the dangers, and the difficulty of our dreams. Bob has to not only overcome his fears and doubts but overcome Xena's negativity. She tarnishes the lessons being learned. The stories are embedded with her negativity and existence so it would be hard for the author to leave her out as a character without rewriting the whole story, though she is really not needed. Bob has much to deal while solving the problems at hand, discovering what his true destiny and purpose is.

The great things about this story is that it teaches life lessons. Bob learns to overcome his fears while helping other animals overcome theirs. He listens to the wise animals and to Miss Marine and helps the animals on the island live happily. He follows his dreams. Overall, children who love animals and the ocean are going to love this 50 page picture book.

She finds herself torn between the man she lives with and the man she loves. A letter arrives from a long-lost cousin encouraging her to travel to Italy to uncover the secret to her wine and her heart. Tension is tight around the vineyard, so she leaps at the chance. No one is allowing you to remain innocent and stuck on the wheel of life and death for eternity, but yourself. Even though the mind forgets, the soul remembers. Hopefully by examining these lifetimes you will understand the truth. You are responsible for the life you have--no one else." From Sonoma, Italy, and the Middle Ages Francesca travels to uncover the truth of the wine and the two men who have fought over her for centuries. Romancing the Vines is the sweeping romance of Francesca, Enrico, and Giancarlo and the secret to the wine that has been eluding her for centuries.

46. Interview with Kathleen Andrews Davis for The Blue Velvet

Come and join me as I talk with author Kathleen Andrews Davis about her children's book The Blue Velvet (Emerson's Attic Book 1) on Stories From Unknown Authors http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors at 1pm EST today.

Emerson's Attic-The Blue Velvet

Review:
The Blue Velvet is a delightful story of a teenage girl and her family history. Upon cleaning the attic Emerson finds a blue velvet hat in a trunk and puts it upon her head. At that moment her whole life changes. She is thrust back into the 1800's where she is a maid at Harrington Hall. Though her new life takes lots of getting used to she realizes how much she is needed. She becomes close friends with the Harrington's daughter, Genevieve. It is this close relationship, and the help from her grandfather who sends her clues in dreams, that Emerson changes the future. She saves Genevieve's life and in turn opens her world up to many possibilities.

Ms. Davis does a wonderful job sucking the reader into the history of Emerson's life and where she comes from. When looking at old items we sometimes don't think about the lives of the people who owned them. What they had gone through and the trials they had to endure. Sometimes we just think of them as junk. But Ms. Davis gives us a look into this characters life and gets us thinking about all the possibilities. Next time we look at an old hat or item a past relative had, we will look at it differently.

Children from 4th grades and up with enjoy reading this 128 page book about Emerson's journey and will look forward to learning more about this interesting character.

Book Summary:
Emerson McBride is a normal American teenager. She goes to school, plays soccer, and roams the mall with friends. Her life is just like any other 14-year-old’s until she is sent to clean the attic in the old Victorian as punishment for fighting with her younger brother.

Suddenly, she is thrown back in time to a totally foreign world. Frightened, and armed only with dreams of her grandfather, Emerson ventures into the unknown.

How did she get here? Who are these people? Where is she and why is she here? These questions and many more follow Emerson into a new life in a new land.

About the Author

Kathleen Andrews Davis lives in the mountains of rural Central Pennsylvania with her husband -- and a horde of white-tail deer who insist on annihilating all her attempts at gardening. After a long and varied working career, including business writing, she and her husband renovated an old house into a bed and breakfast. "When we sold our lovely Victorian B&B after hard work and great satisfaction," she says, it left a hole in my heart and I found myself with an indistinguishable yearning. Watching my aunt, Judith Redline Coopey, fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a successful published author started the little wheels in my head turning. If I like commercial writing, then why shouldn't I like creative writing." This book is a satisfaction of the author's yearning -- the desire to leave a legacy for her grandchildren and young readers everywhere -- and is the first in a series of stories about her very courageous and imaginative heroine, Emerson McBride.

47. Review for Lucky Strike by Bobbie Pyron

A rich, southern voice tells the unforgettable story of two vulnerable outsiders, the lightning strike that turns their world upside down and the true meaning of lucky.
Nate Harlow has never had a lucky day in his life. He's never won a prize, he's never been picked first, he's never even won a coin toss. His best friend, Genesis Beam (aka Gen), believes in science and logic, and she doesn't think for one second that there's such a thing as luck, good or bad. But only an extremely unlucky person could be struck by lightning on his birthday... and that person is Nate Harlow. By some miracle, though, Nate survives, and the strike seems to have changed his luck. Suddenly, Nate's grandpa is the busiest fisherman in their small, beachside town. And Nate finds himself the center of attention, the most popular kid at school, the one who hits a game-winning home run! This lucky streak can't last forever, though, and as a hurricane draws close to the shores of Paradise Beach, Nate and Gen may need more than just good luck to save their friendship and their town: They need a miracle.

  • Age Range: 8 - 12 years
  • Grade Level: 3 - 7
  • Hardcover: 272 pages
  • Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books (February 24, 2015)
  • ISBN-10: 0545592178
  • ISBN-13: 978-0545592178
Review:
Lucky Strike is your typical story about two unique kids who get picked on at school. Genesis Beam is a brilliant, and at times, annoying walking encyclopedia, while Nate Harlow is the most unluckiest child in the world. Being bullied is not uncommon with these two. What changes everything is that Nate gets struck by lightening, but not directly. Though it didn't kill him, it did leave a scar on his hand and arm. It also changed his luck. For once in his life, everything seemed to work out for him. He was becoming friends with the most popular kids in school, he didn't get bullied, he even brought luck to the people who were around him. The problem was, as his popularity began to grow, so did his ego. He forgot what was important to him---it was his great friendship with Genesis, the one who liked him for who he was not who he was becoming. He didn't realize until it was almost too late how good he had it. The grass is greener on the other side, is what comes to mind when reading this book, but as we know the grass is only greener where you water it.

What is great about this story is how Nate realized what was truly important. It's not getting everything you want, it is to appreciate what you have. Though Nate liked helping other people he also saw the ugliness in people when they couldn't use him for what they wanted. They began turning his good fortune into something bad and it began to hurt the ones he loved. That certainly wasn't what he wanted. In fact, he wished that the lightening strike never happened to him and if he could have he would have reversed everything. But then a hurricane hit their town and instead of thinking about himself, Nate reached out to help others.  When Genesis needed him that was when the lightening strike had become a true blessing. A broken friendship was immediately mended and the gift was no longer a curse. With supporting friends and family around him he was indeed the luckiest boy in the world.

Review:
Sadie and the Superstars is an inspiring story of a handicapped dog named Sadie who has overcome great obstacles. The story begins with a boy named, Max, and his dog, Dexter, who are both deaf. They meet up with Zach and some other friends and play baseball. Afterwards, they meet a girl named Joal who has Sadie in a wagon. Some of the kids pick on Sadie because she can't walk but the new friends ignore the kids and go and play together. They have a fun afternoon swimming down at the lake. As they walk back through town they run into some people in wheelchairs who are playing basketball. The people find Sadie inspiring because they too, cannot walk and need wheels to move around.

This story is inspiring to everyone. If Sadie can rise above all the problems and pain she had gone through, then others can do it as well. Sadie teaches everyone to focus on what they Can Do and not what they Can't Do.

When she isn’t working, Allison can be found enjoying time with her family, selling 3 D Mascara, and taking walks with Carlton.
