26. An ancient prophecy hinges on The Star Child... A great YA read!

Today I welcome Stephanie Keyes and her book, The Star Child!  I absolutely love this cover! Check it out!!!

About The Star Child:

Kellen St. James is just your average seventeen-year-old prodigy, but with a Yale degree, a photographic memory, and an addiction to everything 80s. But what's not so average about Kellen is the girl who's been haunting his dreams for the last eleven years. When the sudden death of his grandmother takes him from the East Coast to the Irish Coast, he finds himself face to face with his own personal ghost and finds out that she's just as real as he is. Plus she's come spinning a tale about an ancient prophecy in which Kellen plays a key role. Together they will travel through an underworld of faeries and demons, angels and gods, not to mention a really ticked off pack of wild dogs, all in order to save the world from darkness. But will they make it in time?

Stephanie Keyes has worked for the past twelve years as a corporate educator and curriculum designer in the Telecommunications industry. She holds a Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in Instructional Technology from Duquesne University and an Undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems from Robert Morris University. She is a classically trained clarinetist, but also plays the saxophone and sings. When she’s not writing, she is a wife to a wonderfully supportive husband and mother to three: two little boys and one cock-a-poo princess. The Star Child is Mrs. Keyes’ first novel.

28. Two hot brothers, one must-read series!!! Elements by Kate Fuentes!!! GIVEAWAY!

Today I welcome Kate Fuentes and her YA series Elements!

Hi Kate!!!

Greetings! Thank you for allowing me to be a guest on your site today Jan! I’m looking forward to having a tremendous time sharing posts and having “Giveaways” on various blogs with the Summer Teen Reading Party event! There will be amazing book titles and fabulous interviews with authors from all genres participating! Be sure to stop by and check it out! I also have a giveaway today – just read on for the details!

When I look back to when I had less wrinkles and a smaller backside, I remember the excitement of summer! To be free from the confines of school and ready to make memories with my friends over the summer break, but I also recall having time to relax and read a good book. Whether it was on a vacation we had taken to the beach or a lazy afternoon in the backyard, I found the time to sit and experience the fantasy realms of some of my favorite stories. I’m a BIG fan of Greek Mythology and the legendary heroes of yesteryear.  I believe this type of ‘epic adventure ‘writing help mold my own form of literary style and created a vast foundation of imagination outlets to pull from when I’m constructing my young adult series ELEMENTS.  I have written and published two books in the series thus far and plan to release the third in the series just before summer begins in 2012.

The ELEMENTS novels follow the lives of fraternal twin brothers Gage and Talon Thorn. They were born from an ancient prophecy and have the extraordinary elemental abilities of fire and water. A wicked underworld emperor is determined to destroy the ‘Brothers of Prophecy’ and claim the earth realm for his own if the brothers don’t learn how to control their gifts and save humanity from the clutches of evil. The twins must experience tragedy, loss and defeat before they try to push forward and live up to what destiny has asked of them. The challenge has been set forth by dark forces and the world must put their faith in a pair of young brothers. The future is uncertain.

To find out more about the ELEMENTS series please visit Kate Fuentes webpage for more details.

Elements: The Beginning....
Destiny brought them into this world to save mankind and malevolent forces will stop at nothing in order to annihilate them.
Born with extraordinary powers, fraternal twins Gage and Talon Thorn learn how to control their mystical abilities. Tragedy strikes the family and their ordinary father Gable is forced to raise them on his own. Pain and loss encompass the Thorns as they persevere to live a normal life in a place determined to destroy their happiness.

Soon their incredible gifts need proper nurturing and Gable recruits a special group of people to help in their upbringing. A sassy, tenacious nanny named Leia and an eccentric unorthodox warrior named Maui complete the dream team of mentors to aid in the complexity of their lives.

Evil, wicked forces lurk in the shadows and the boys are in danger if they don't learn how to control their unique talents and harness their elemental powers. Humanity rests in the hands of the young brothers as they embark on an epic adventure to save mankind from the dark emperor.

Elements: Veil of Darkness...
Talon Thorn’s entire world comes tumbling down around him as he experiences the unexpected separation and possible death of his twin brother Gage. He struggles to balance the emotional onslaught of anger and guilt in a life where triumph can fade to cataclysmic despair in an instant.

With the ancient prophecy to protect mankind still looming over him, Talon remains confident he can unlock the impenetrable gates to an unknown dimension and free his family from the evil that has held them captive for so long. Reality cross connects with fantasy and shatters the misconception the Earth realm is the only civilization within our universe after Talon uncovers the path to mystic portals.

Dark forces remain ever present and are lured by Talon’s fury combined with his supernatural abilities to harness the elemental power of fire along with extraordinary shape-shifting skills. He must embrace the courage to control his amazing gifts and follow the hidden evidence that may lead him to discovering his lost family or deliver him directly to the enemy. Malicious minions have challenged the sole survivor of the ‘Brothers of Prophecy’ and will try to obliterate the only remaining force that can save humanity.

Author Bio: Kate Fuentes

My name is Kate Fuentes, author of a young adult fantasy series called Elements. I modeled the characters after my two sons and created the fantasy realm as a story to read to my children at night. I'm fascinated at the enormity of endless imagination that we humans are capable of having, and enjoy being able to write fiction for others to appreciate as well.

My series includes: Book one, Elements: The Beginning, Book two, Elements: Veil of Darkness, and soon to be released in the summer of 2012, Book three, Elements: Kingdom of Aqueous. I plan to continue the installments and have not decided how many books will complete the series. I, like so many of my author counterparts, aspire to create more books and characters for my readers to enjoy. I have two projects currently in the beginning phases of conception and will release details in the fall of 2012 on my webpage KateFuentes.com.

I attended college in Arizona and transferred to California where I finished my studies in business marketing and advertising while progressively composing short stories in the foreground. Research and development is one of my favorite aspects of writing along with the actual creation of the story from imagination to the novel itself.

I am quite passionate about writing but also enjoy helping those that are underprivileged, forgotten, and oppressed by working in a global reach department during the week in the hopes that I may bring attention to the causes which will, in effect, inspire others to volunteer or champion for those less fortunate both locally and around the world.

On a personal note, I am happily married to my junior high sweetheart and we have two glorious children. We appreciate our time spent with one another and always make sure we set aside a day for family fun night.

30. "Once Again" by Amy Durham.... Reincarnation???

Today I welcome Amy Durham and her book, "Once Again" to my blog!!!

About ONCE AGAIN:

Reincarnation sucks! Unless it comes with a cute guy. That’s what sixteen year-old Layla Bradford discovers when she moves to Sky Cove, Maine, a small-town she thought was ordinary, but turns out to be an episode of “Cold Case” on steroids.

Layla doesn’t want to fit in; she wants to blend in and stay out of the spotlight. But the spotlight is where she winds up when she catches the eye of school cross-country star and all-around-nice-guy Lucas Ellis. She quickly learns there’s more at stake than high school reputations when she and Lucas discover they are the reincarnations of a young married couple from the mid-1800s who suffered a horrible tragedy at the hands of a madman who was never brought to justice. After a series of frightening visions show Layla and Lucas glimpses of their past-lives, they realize that the villain of their previous existence has also been reincarnated, in the form of a fellow high school student who targets them with teenage pranks that soon turn dangerous. As they grow closer, will Layla and Lucas be able to uncover the truth in time to stop the same tragedy from unfolding once again?

About the Author

Amy Durham discovered her love of writing in the sixth grade. What began as a love of writing poetry soon turned into stories scribbled into school notebooks. In the eighth grade, her English teacher told her she was good at it and encouraged her to continue to put pen to paper. At that moment, the die was cast, and writing would forever be a part of her life. As an adult, Amy focuses her efforts on writing Young Adult Fiction... adventure, romance, and life-lessons... woven together as imagination and escape for young readers. Amy holds a firm belief that books are not only entertaining, but have the ability to transform young lives. A book can educate. A book can teach compassion and kindness. A book can spark interest. A book can be a companion. Simply put, books can accompany and guide young readers as they try to navigate their way through the twisted, con

31. BANYAN: When a wishing stick transports you to another world...

Today I welcome Sameena Bachmeier and her book, BANYAN!

About Banyan:

Kannie Irnest had the picture perfect life as a child until her father left her and her mother alone. It wasn't long before the world as she knew it began unraveling and creating a web of misery around her. Her mother was no longer the loving mother she knew. Bitter and lonely, Kannie sank into a depression. The only joy Kannie seemed to find was with her friend Kristopher. They were like two peas in a pod since a young age and when they were together it was as if the world around them didn't matter. Mysteriously, one day on Kannie's way to school, she is given a Banyan tree stick. She learns that it is a wishing stick. Although skeptical, Kannie is desperate to experience a happy life and she wishes on the Banyan stick to be anywhere but in that moment in her life. She awakens everyday thereafter to a different historical event that exposes her to experiences, places and people she had only read about in books. From the Salem Witch trials, to being aboard the infamous Britannic, to taking flight upon the Apollo 11, each journey she embarks on teaches her to believe in herself, forgive others and appreciate the path that lies in front of her. She also now, must embark on her greatest venture yet, finding her way back home.

35. A Wonderful Mother's Day Story and Giveaway by Natalie Wright.

I am hosting author Natialie Wright today, who has written a wonderful Mother's Day post.....

Thank you, Jan, for having me as a guest today, Mother’s Day. While recently mulling over the meaning of motherhood, I wrote a short story that I’ll share with you today. Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

Mom

You open your eyes and the first thing you see is her face. You love nothing more than looking at that face. You don’t yet have the words to define what you see. Al you know is that you feel happier when she casts her eyes on yours; that when her lips curl up at the sides it makes your lips curl up too – and that feels nice.

You’ve just hit the ground after stepping off the bus and you feel rotten inside. There’s never been a worse day.

It started in the morning when you unpacked your backpack and realized you’d forgotten to pack your math homework. Then at lunch your so-called best friend didn’t save you a seat and you had to sit alone. Things went downhill after that. Josh’s usual teasing in art class made you want to punch him or cry, but you don’t do either.

She’s there, waiting for you. Some days you wish she wouldn’t hover. You’re a big kid now, not three. But that day, it feels kinda nice to know that she knows you’ve had a miserable day before you even say anything. She hugs you tight and lets you tell her all about it. By dinner she has somehow managed to make you forget it was the worst day ever in the history of days.

You’re in your room with the door closed, but she’s knocking on it. Can’t she see you don’t want to talk? Doesn’t she get that door closed means “leave me alone?” you’re not in third grade anymore. Maybe she used to be able to make it all better with a hug, but this isn’t something that gets better with a hug and a cookie. She wouldn’t understand anyway.

“Go away!” you scream. “I just want to be alone.”

She stops knocking and you hear her footsteps retreat down the hall. “Thank God!” you think as you cry out your heartache into your pillow. You don’t know that she is in her room, crying her heartache out into her pillow.

You’re not sure why you’re so mad at her one day, then curling into her lap to watch T.V. with her the next. It’s like sometimes looking at that face that used to make everything feel right just reminds you of everything that’s wrong. It feels like that more and more.

But some days, you don’t know why, you see her face and her eyes look like they could melt you like sugar in the rain. And on those days, you want nothing more than to have her hug you and stroke your hair and tell you it will be okay. And some days you let her.

She’s bringing another box up the stairs and so help you, if she cries one more tear you’re going to lock her out! You see her biting her lip and sucking in a breath. She’s fighting back tears. Good! This is supposed to be a happy day. You’ve earned your freedom. You’re taking your first big step to independence. Doesn’t she want you to be independent? Isn’t that a good thing? Why is she crying all the time? Probably hormones. “Shoot me if I’m ever a mess like that,” you think.

You’re holding your diploma in your hand and posing for pictures with your friends. She’s snapping the camera and smiling a lot. You can see in her eyes that she’s proud of you. Knowing she’s proud and happy for you makes you feel warm inside. You wouldn’t admit it to anybody, but you’re glad she’s proud. She’s not blubbering today like the day she dropped you off on campus the first time, but you see her mist up a few times. You notice a few more grey hairs at her temples. Are there more lines around her eyes than the last time you saw her? She comes over and hugs you and you let her. You even hug her back, real tight.

It’s so hot outside the pavement feels like black lava licking right up through your shoes. Your husband holds your hand (too tight for your liking) as you waddle through the doors of the hospital to check in.

“Did you call my mom?” you ask.

“Yeah. She’s on her way.”

Your pain feels a bit less biting when you see her head poke into the room. In that moment, you can’t imagine why you ever pushed her away. Even the man you adore with all your heart can’t take her place today. She puts her warm, soft hand on your forehead and you feel an immediate calm come over you.

“You can do this,” she says. She smiles down at you and you look up into her twinkling eyes. There’s something there – almost a memory. You look in her eyes and you believe her. “I can do this,” you say.

It’s the middle of the night. Everyone’s gone now. It’s just you and your little one. She lays in your arms sleeping. So small. So fragile.

She’s got her tiny fingers wrapped around your pinkie in a grip that feels too strong for such a tiny creature. You look down at the angelic face cradled in your arms and even though you just met her, you love her more than you knew you could love. It’s a love so powerful and so deep that it hurts.

And you know that someday you’re going to cry like an idiot when you’re moving boxes to her new place. You see it all like a movie going fast motion in your head. You’ll want to wail and hold onto her but you know you won’t. You’ll let her go, just like your mamma let you go. And you know in that instant it will hurt more than any hurt you’ve ever known.

You take back what you’d said. When the tears fall, you don’t want anyone to shoot you for it. You’re a mother now. Tears come naturally.

(Jan) Thank you so much Natalie! That was absolutely beautiful.

From Kirkus Reviews: With her two best friends by her side and her mother’s memory in her heart, a teenager undertakes a journey to save the world from an ancient evil.

Emily Adams has always known she’s special. Throughout her whole life she’s had visions of things that haven’t happened yet and she could always read her mother’s mind. At least, she could until her mother died. Emily thinks her abilities are just about gone, but the arrival of a strange creature in her backyard one night proves otherwise. Emily discovers she is the last of the Order of Brighid, an ancient society of women sworn to protect the portal to the Netherworld. Now, with the portal under attack, it’s up to Emily and her two loyal, wisecracking friends to stop a villainous man before his actions destroy the world.

Where Do Story Ideas Come From?

I first wish to thank Jan for allowing me to spend the day here on her blog. I also wish to thank her for inventing and organizing this Summer Reading Blog Hop.

There’s an old house I pass every day I drive from my home in the country into Lake City, the nearest city. It sits close to my own house but directly on Highway 90. The house is more of a cottage, actually, and very cute. It’s the sort of cottage I could imagine visiting Grandma at or meeting other ladies for afternoon tea. The cottage is adorable.

But beside the cottage sits a rugged lean-to shed that isn’t quite as adorable. In fact, it scares me. I always study it in passing wondering what’s inside. That’s when my imagination kicks in and I think I know what, or rather who, is inside that lean-to.

I see a pair of very young light blue eyes watching cars pass through slats between the weathered boards. Dark stringy hair, once shiny blonde, surrounds a round, dirty face that was once white as paper. Then, from within the house I hear a male adult bellow. A quavering old woman’s voice yells back. I can’t distinguish what the words are but the intent is obvious. They are arguing about something. The girl’s eyes widen and slide sideways, her gaze falling on the house.

Then I am past the house and my mind returns to driving into town to get my son at school. But those pale blue eyes haunt my memory…

As you can see, the horrors of our world are never far from my mind. It always pains me when something like my vision actually occurs—which is too often these days. This pain is the reason I began writing the Seraphym Wars series. It contains actual news like my scene above, except taken directly from newspapers.

My newest book, Harpies, Book Two will be out soon, we are currently in edits. It is a continuation of the journey for the remaining three Vigorios. Here is a blurb to whet your whistle:

BLURB

Transported to a planet he'd never heard of was the least of fifteen-year-old Griffen's problems. Driven to find the last Vigorio, a young girl able to experience others' emotions, they journey together toward their destinies as warriors against Narciss, Ruler of Tartarus and his Legio of demon-dragons. 44. VEILED VIRTUES: Proudly Paranormal! $20 B&N and Book Giveaway!!!

Hi everyone! Today I am part of the Proudly Paranormal Blog Hop! Please read on to find out how you can win a $20 Barnes & Noble Gift Card or a free e-copy of my book!

My novel, VEILED VIRTUES, contains many various paranormal elements. Ghosts? Auras? Casting spells? Reading minds? Visions and voices? Healing hands? Crystals and stones? Say WHAAAT?

While writing Veiled Virtues, I did a lot of research online about various paranormal topics, including what things a metaphysical shop might carry, and what such items are used for. I incorporated several of those items into my book, because one of the main characters is the shopkeeper of a new age type store. For example, a tarot card reading done for Paige reveals some creepy foreshadowing and begins to open up her mind to potentials outside of the realm of 'normalcy'. While she at first blows off the alleged powers of stones and crystals, she ultimately turns to them in a moment of life and death. Paige's journey begins with her natural reaction to deny paranormal occorrences, then we see her questioning what is "normal," but in the end, will she embrace the fact that she is different?

Here's a blurb for you....

When Paige Stewart left America to house-sit in England, her only thoughts were to get away from her controlling mother and to have fun. I have picked out a couple of excerpts to share today - here you go!

Paige's first morning alone in England:

Nigel and Steph left for their trip early the next morning, leaving me with my much-anticipated freedom and plenty of cash. After seeing them off, I made myself at home in the bathroom, putting all of my stuff away and settling in for my lengthy stay. Brushing my teeth in front of the mirror, my complexion glared back. For a second, I could have sworn blood oozed from the small blunt scar lines on my forehead. I leaned into the mirror for a closer look at my head, but saw no trace of blood.

My ugly scars caused my middle school nickname, ‘Scratch.’ It could have been worse. One particularly doomed schoolmate was named Ann Nospickler.

My ugly scars caused my middle school nickname, ‘Scratch.’ It could have been worse. One particularly doomed schoolmate was named Ann Nospickler.

I sighed. At least the long-healed scratches weren’t that noticeable, and my hair covered the ones on the sides and back of my head. The scars had been there since my infancy, so I was used to them, but still, they weren’t too appealing. However, that day, my excitement about being on my own in England was far too great to let anything get me down.

Meeting Nathaniel:

Movement at the back of the store caught my eye and I peered over a shelf of books to get a clearer view. When the man turned around, I let out an audible gasp. He stood at the counter, sorting through the contents of a box in front of him, and his striking facial features hit me hard — ruddy cheeks, pink lips, perfect cheekbones, and a strong jaw, all topped by blonde, tousled hair. Aside from lacking a bronze tan, he looked like he belonged on a California beach. His entire being was just exquisite. Gorgeous.

When he suddenly looked up and caught my gaze, I was shocked at the crystal-blue eyes that met mine. I closed my gaping mouth and quickly looked away. A few seconds later, his smooth voice melted me.

“Can I assist you with anything in particular?”

It was the sexiest British accent I’d ever heard.

“Um, no,” I answered, feeling a rush of blood shoot to my cheeks. I pretended to be seriously browsing through some things called smudge sticks.

“What brings you in here today?” He started around the counter toward me, smiling.

“Just, uh, checking out some shops in town,” I stammered, and gawked at his lips and teeth fit for an actor in a toothpaste commercial. The outline of his chest muscles under his lightweight fitted navy t-shirt made my already warm cheeks grow tingly hot.

Wow, no wonder all the girls have crushes on him.

“Are you on holiday from America?” he asked, apparently noticing from my American accent or lack of an English one that I was not British.

He walked closer to me. “Um, no. I’m, uh, house-sitting this summer for the Cooks, Nigel and Stephanie. Do you know them?”

“Dr. Cook?”

“Yes, and, um, her husband Nigel is an administrator at the school place, uh, cottage — I mean college,” I responded, tripping over my words and undoubtedly sounding like a bumbling idiot. He grinned.

I will be giving away a $20 Barnes & Noble Gift Card for one person and one free ebook copy of Veiled Virtues to another person! You need to leave a comment to be entered, plus, I love to interact with readers!  Thanks for visiting!  Jan

46. How do you "Tweet This"???

Finding more followers, getting webpage visitors to share a link, tweet a keyword or mention you on Twitter can seem difficult, but it actually very easy.

So, how do you "Tweet This"???  Simply go to https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons#tweet and get the code to create the "Tweet This" buttons and link. There are four types you can do. I suggest putting at least the first two on all of your pages.

1. Share a Link

2. Follow Me

3. Tweet #[keyword]

4. Mention (tweet a comment about @theperson)

Simply choose what you want to do, make sure you include what links or @name you want, then copy the html code it gives you. You can then paste this code into your page or post by switching over to the HTML editor and pasting it in. Start in the visual mode (normal typing) and place the curser where you want to add the "tweet this" button. Then click over to the HTML editor, find the blinking curser, place the mouse pointer on it, and click paste.  Then, switch back over to visual mode editing.  Your button should now be there!

Your friends will be so impressed at how tech savvy you are! : )  Do you have other Twitter tips and tricks? Please share!  Cheers! Jan

Cheers! Jan

Bonus: Check the bottom of the post for an excerpt from MIRROR, MIRROR!

Welcome Penny!

Hi Jan, thank you for hosting me today.

Where are you from?

I was born in Stamford, Connecticut and lived there until I was 25.  I got married and lived for a short time in Massachusetts.  After I got divorced, I moved back to Connecticut where I lived until I was about 30 and I spent a half year living in New Hampshire, after that I spent a year in California where I met my husband of 30 plus years.  We moved to Oregon in 1978.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My daughter was my inspiration for Ghost for Rent. Prior to writing that, my focus was short stories and non-fiction articles.  I had been writing for a number of years and had several published pieces in small press genre magazines, online magazines, parenting, teen self-help, and writing magazines.  My daughter, who was about ten or eleven at the time, insisted I wasn’t a “real” writer because I didn’t have a book.  Her friends were all impressed by my bylines, but she wasn’t.  I decided it was time to prove I was a writer and set myself the task of crafting something she might read.  Thus was born Ghost for Rent, a middle-grade paranormal mystery.  Unfortunately, by the time it was finished, accepted by a publisher, and in print, she was too old to want to read it.  However, as an adult and a grade-school teacher, she did invite me to come into the class and talk about being a writer and read to the kids from Ghost for Rent.

How much of the book is realistic?

Today, my focus is on my release from MuseItUp Publishing, Mirror, Mirror.  This is a time-travel romance, so it’s not realistic in many respects.  The main character, Lindsey Baker, works as a paralegal in a courthouse.  The town where she resides is based upon the small county seat close to my home.  She shops in a local thrift shop, whic

She shops in a local thrift shop, which is also based upon a real store, but one which unfortunately has closed.  Some of the other shops she goes into are also based upon real shops in the community. She has plans to visit a Renfaire. This was based upon my own experience attending a local faire.  After that, it is complete fantasy as she is drawn back in time to the fifteenth century.  I did research that period and tried to keep it true to the time.

What book are you reading now?

I just finished reading Garden Spells, by Sarah Addison Allen, which was absolutely delightful. Now I’m reading A Perfect Blood, by Kim Harrison and Son of a Witch, by Gregory Maguire (I finally got around to reading Wicked not too long ago).

Are there any new authors who have grasped your interest?

I’m fortunate to be an editor at MuseItUp Publishing and so I’ve come into contact with numerous authors, all of whom are excellent writers and many of them are published for the first time with our house.  I don’t want anyone to feel slighted, so I can’t name any names.  I would encourage your readers to check out the MuseItUp bookstore and see all the wonderful titles available. (https://museituppublishing.com/bookstore2/ )

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Actually, one of my readers pointed out an error in Mirror, Mirror.  I made reference to a book which hadn’t been published in 1421, the year Lindsey is transported back to.  Fortunately, my publisher is willing to make the change, although it may take a few weeks for all the sites where the book is sold to get the updated version.  I was quite embarrassed when I found out about it.  It’s just one of those things, as an author, I should have verified.  No one else thought to question it, since the book referred to was written by a British author.  It was a British reader who pointed it out.  She knew,  and she said many of her fellow British readers would probably notice the error.  These things happen.  I’m just so pleased I’m working with a publisher who is willing to make the change.

Who designed the covers?

MuseItUp has very talented cover artists.  My cover for Love Delivery, designed by Delilah K. Stephans, was a first place winner in the Alternative Read cover contest.  My other two covers for Lady in Waiting and Mirror, Mirror were designed by Suzannah Safi.  I’m sure if I had entered them in a cover art contest, they could have won as well. I was a bit disappointed in the way the cover art contest works, though.  I’m afraid I was a bit naïve thinking people go, look at the covers, and vote for the one they like best.  It’s more a case of authors begging friends, family, and acquaintances to go and vote for their covers.  The more friends you have, the more votes you get.  That’s not to say my winning cover isn’t fantastic.  I truly believe it deserved to win and I’m very pleased and proud of them.

Do you see writing as a career?

When I was younger, I always thought I wanted to be a writer.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have the knowledge or support available to young writers now, and after my first rejections, I gave up the idea of pursuing writing as a career.  My paid jobs have always been in the secretarial field, so I’ve used writing throughout my career compiling reports, creating letters, and editing others’ work. Earning a living as a writer, however, is very difficult and only a few writers can claim to do it.

I recently met a writer who self-published her memoir, but in actuality, she has made her career as a writer, writing technical manuals, educational videos, and other corporate documents.  There are a lot of ways to earn money as a writer.  Writing fiction isn’t the only writing career.  If a person wants to write full-time, they have to be willing to do everything from writing newsletters to grants, corporate brochures, and advertising copy.

At this point in my life, I write because I love it, not because I need a career.  Technically, I’m retired, so I’m working in the writing field because I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up.

Tell us your latest news.

During 2011, I had three short romances published by MuseItUp Publishing. Love Delivery is a contemporary romance; Lady in Waiting is an historical romance, and Mirror, Mirror, is a time travel romance. Also in 2011, Sam’s Dot Publishing released a collection of my short stories, half are fantasy and half are science fiction, titled A Past and A Future. I have four stories under contract with 4RV Publishing: Ghost for Rent (originally published in 2002 by Hardshell Word Factory and now revised with chapter illustrations), Ghost for Lunch, (both are middle-grade paranormal mysteries), Boo’s Bad Day, and Many Colored Coats (both are picture books).

EXCERPT:  MIRROR, MIRROR

“Fool-born child!  Watch where you are walking. The master will have your hide for getting mud all over his clean shirts.”

Someone pulled her ear—hard—and Lindsey yelped with pain.  She was tugged up into a kneeling, then standing position, before she opened her eyes.  She realized in the first moment she was no longer in Oregon.

“Where is your cap?  If the master sees you with your hair hanging down all over your face, he will switch us both.”

She stared wide-eyed as a large, buxom woman bent down, picked up dirty white shirts from the ground, and thrust them into Lindsey’s arms.

“‘Tis not here. Take my extra one.”  The woman grabbed Lindsey’s hair, balled it, and shoved it into a long, sleeve-like cap, which came to Lindsey’s forehead and fell down around her shoulders.  Balancing the load of shirts with one hand, she felt the cap.  Not a shred of her hair was showing.

“Um, thanks,” she said.

“Well, donna be thanking me now.  You just watch what you be doing next time, clumsy girl.  Now march back into the washhouse and get the mud off those shirts.  When you have finished, hang them out to dry. Then get you into the kitchen and help cook with dinner.”  The woman brushed her hands off; then she smoothed her apron and marched through a courtyard toward a large stone house.

Dumbfounded, Lindsey stood where the woman left her.  She looked down at herself and saw she still wore her second-hand clothes from St. Vincent de Paul’s.  Her feet were bare. Then she noticed the woman walking away from her was also barefooted.  Despite the muddy courtyard, the air was warm and so was the soil.  But where am I?  As she looked around, the structure of the buildings reminded her of pictures from her British History course in college.

In the opposite direction from which the woman took, Lindsey noticed a path leading to a small outbuilding.  Smoke rose from a chimney.  She trudged back to the washhouse, opened the door but stepped back outside when her eyes began to tear, and the heat blasted her face.  Do people actually work under these conditions?  With the door opened, some of the smoke and steam cleared, and she was able to see a large wooden tub sitting on metal legs straddling hot coals. Lindsey dumped the load of shirts into the tub, picked up a stick and stirred the load in the water.  Before long, her muscles ached, and she had blisters on her hands. Once the tears began, there was no stopping them.  Until this point, she hadn’t thought much beyond putting one foot in front of the other.  She collapsed on a small overturned crate and with head in hands, had a good cry.

With red, puffy eyes, and stuffed nose, Lindsey looked up when the door opened.  A wizened old woman leaning on a cane shuffled in.  She looked at Lindsey with questioning eyes.  “Is it really you, Mistress?” she asked.

“What do you mean?  Who am I supposed to be?” Lindsey responded between sobs.

The old woman began to dance.  “It worked!  It worked!”

Lindsey wiped the tears from her eyes with the bottom of her skirt.  “What worked?” she asked, realizing this woman might know what happened.

“Why the summoning I did for Mistress Prudence.  So you’re the one, eh?”  The old woman pinched Lindsey’s cheek and turned Lindsey’s face from side to side to get a good look.  “Well you do look like the young Mistress.

When are you from, then?”

“You did say when, not where?”

“Of course.  I know you’re not from now, foolish simpkin.  I brung you here.”

“This morning it was 2011.  I’m not sure what year it is now.”

“‘Tis the year 1421, and you need to get busy, little missy.  You need to get the Master to accept Prudence as his bride.  Soon as you do, we can send you back from whence you came.”

Lindsey stood and looked down at the little woman. “Just how do you propose I do that?  Who is this master, anyway?”

“Why, he be the master of the house.  He loves our Prudence, he does, but his father wants him to marry for money.  He’s just distraught our Master is.  I wager you be a smart woman. You can get our Master to marry you. I canna help you anymore, but I’ll be watching you.”  The crone turned and shuffled toward the door.

50. Scheduling Automatic Tweets! What's the best app out there?? Please share!

I'm sure many of you, like me, have a Twitter account. I am able to check it a couple of times during the day and I try to post a couple of tweets. However, I feel that I am missing a large portion of my followers by not being able to have a greater presence. So, I joined (for free) www.SocialOomph.com. There are other sites out there, and I do not endorse or promote Social Oomph, it is just the first one I have tried out.

It's this simple:

1) Join and add your Twiiter account

2) Select "Schedule New Update"

3) Compose your tweet and schedule it, save it as a draft

4) Repeat if you want (limit of 12 tweets per hour)

Mind you, no one likes a spammer, so don't schedule a "buy my book" tweet every five minutes. : )

You can also create an extended profile, including pictures, videos, links, etc.

You can set up a direct welcome message for new followers ($3.97 bi-weekly fee for this) and set up auto follow for new followers of you.

Their site has many, many other capabilities, but you need to upgrade to the professional version. They do offer a free 168 hour trial of it, but bear in mind after the free trial it costs around $18 every two weeks.

Please share with us any app or site you use to help manage your Twitter account. I am looking for a version that has more free features than Social Oomph.  Thanks!!!
