26. YA crush tourney —THE FINAL ROUND! Prizes and more.

Thanks to all of you, Jace won his round in the YA Crush Tourney against that devious ice price, Ash! And as a celebratory prize I posted the Jace POV Manor House scene from City of Glass.

Now, tomorrow Jace goes up against sexy Scot Zachary Moore from the excellent Shift and Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready. If you haven't read the books, I recommend them, and Jeri — who I met briefly at Romantic Times — is a doll. So if you gotta go Team Kilt, I understand. But since this is the last round of the Tourney, which means whoever wins the round wins the entire contest, it's time to pull out the big guns.

1) TMI fans, I want you out spreading the word! Link to the Tourney on Twitter any time after 8am tomorrow (use the #teamjace hashtag ) on Facebook, on your blog, on Tumblr — anywhere! Go here and leave a link to your post and you'll be entered into a contest to win all sorts of awesome things like a set of personalized books, TMI jewelry, signed posters, chapter samplers for upcoming books, and other coolness.

2) So I took a poll (a short one) http://twtpoll.com/1646lf and here's special content that won. It's what I'll post if Jace wins.

a) The unedited version of the Dirty Sexy Club scene (a Jace and, well, guess who, scene from City of Lost Souls) . . . before I toned it down.

I will also throw in the second runner up:

b) A substantial teaser of a *spicy* scene from CP. Tessa & ..someone. ;) Because why should ID be left out?

Bonus: If Jace wins by more than a thousand votes, I'll post one of Magnus&Alec's kissing scenes from CoLS. ;)

3) And finally, if Jace wins, I'll donate $500 dollars to Reading Is Fundamental, the same charity that the Mortal Instruments jewelry store supports. http://www.etsy.com/shop/hebelmet

Instructions on how to vote at the YA Sisterhood blog (http://ya-sisterhood.blogspot.com/search/label/YA%20crush%20tournament) and all that other good stuff will be posted tomorrow. Voting will start at 8am!

27. Read Jace's POV on the Manor Scene in City of Glass

Okay, first, THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO VOTED FOR JACE IN THE YA CRUSH TOURNEY. http://bit.ly/ndzenu Tomorrow will be an even tougher battle but for now enjoy the fruits of your victory....

Over the years, many people have asked for this — Jace’s point of view of the “hot and heavy” scene in THIS GUILTY BLOOD, Chapter Nine of City of Glass. (Page 206-211 in the American hardback CoG.) I’ve taken a few liberties here — the scene goes on a few moments past what happens in the printed version of CoG — but then so did the original draft!

The bits below in italics are the bits from the original book, to help you mentally locate the placement of the scene.

Clary heard a sharp pattering noise all around her. For a bewildered moment she thought it had started to rain—then she realized it was rubble and dirt and broken glass: the detritus of the shattered manor being flung down around them like deadly hail.
Jace pressed her harder into the ground, his body flat against hers, his heartbeat nearly as loud in her ears as the sound of the manor’s subsiding ruins.

* * *

Later, Jace would remember little about the destruction of the Manor itself, the shattering apart of the only home he’d known until he was ten years old. He remembered only the fall from the library window, scrambling and rolling down over the grass, and catching hold of Clary, spinning her down and under him, covering her with his body while pieces of the Manor rained down around them like hail.

He could feel her breathing, feel the racing of her heart. He was reminded of his falcon, the way it had curled, blind and trusting, in his hand, the rapidity of its heartbeat. Clary was holding him by the front of the shirt, though he doubt she realized it, her face against his shoulder; he was desperately afraid that there wasn’t enough of him, that he couldn’t cover her completely, protect her entirely. He imagined boulders as big as elephants tumbling across the rocky ground, ready to crush them both, to crush her. The ground shuddered under them and he pressed harder against her, as if that might help somehow. It was magical thinking, he knew, like closing your eyes so you didn’t see the knife coming at you.

The roar had faded. He realized to his surprise that he could hear again: small things, the sound of birds, the air in the trees. Clary’s voice, breathless. “Jace — I think you dropped your stele somewhere.”

He drew back and stared down at her. She met his gaze steadily In the moonlight her green eyes could have been black. Her red hair was full of dust, her face streaked with soot. He could see the pulse in her throat. He said the first thing that he could think of, dazed, “I don’t care. As long as you’re not hurt.”

“I’m fine.” She reached up, her fingers brushing lightly through his hair; his body, super-sensitized by adrenalin, felt it like sparks against his skin. “There’s grass — in your hair,” she said.
There was worry in her eyes. Worry for him. He remembered the first time he’d kissed her, in the greenhouse, how he’d finally gotten it, finally understood the way someone’s mouth against yours could undo you, leave you spinning and breathless. That all the expertise in the world, any techniques you knew or had learned, went out the window when it was the right person you were kissing.
Or the wrong one.

“You shouldn’t touch me,” he said.

Her hand froze where it was, her palm against his cheek. “Why not?”

“You know why. You saw what I saw, didn’t you? The past, the angel. Our parents.”

Her eyes darkened. “I saw.”

“You know what happened.”

“A lot of things happened, Jace —”

“Not for me.” The words breathed out on an anguished whisper. “I have demon blood, Clary. Demon blood. You understood that much, didn’t yo

28. Vote for Jace — outtakes and extras!

So today is the penultimate round of the YA Crush Tournament — Jace vs. Ash from the Iron Fey series. It's a tough one — faerie dudes are hot — but I'm calling TMI fans to vote for Jace, and if he wins, I will release an outtake from City of Lost Souls, and the Manor House scene from City of Glass (Jace and Clary outside the Wayland Manor in Chapter Nine) from Jace's perspective! (And I may have taken a few liberties with the scene to spice it up just a little . . .) Don't forget to vote, and use the tag #teamjace on Twitter to rally the troops!

29. Of Loss, and a teaser for CoLS

Yesterday I posted up a new extra: Of Loss: Will Herondale's perspective on the attic scene from Clockwork Angel. Spoilers for Clockwork Angel, obvs!

[Other past extras for anyone who may have missed them: Because it is Bitter: The Seelie Court scene from City of Ashes told from Jace's point of view.

Kissed: Magnus and Alec's first kiss.]

I'm going to count that as the August teaser for CP (which I just got the proof pages for — it clocks in at 501 pages, a size excellent for killing mosquitos, less good for propping wobbly chairlegs) so here is the teaser for Lost Souls:

* * *

“Warlock,” he said. “I know who you are.”
Magnus raised his eyebrows. “You do?”
“Magnus Bane. Destroyer of the demon Marabas. Son of——”
“Now,” said Magnus, quickly. “There’s no need to go into all of that.”
“But there is.” The demon sounded reasonable, even amused. “If it is infernal assistance you require, why not summon your father?”
Alec looked at Magnus with his mouth open.

30. Clockwork Prince Prologue

You can now find the prologue of Clockwork Prince (which I gave out as a sampler while on tour) up at the Infernal Devices site.

Also, the release date for City of Lost Souls is set for May 8, 2012. Hopefully the world will not end on January 1, 2012, or I will have done a lot of work for nothing . . .

35. Jamie Campbell-Bower, casting Jace and a mini-movie-FAQ

So, yes, it's true: Jamie Campbell-Bower has been cast as Jace. I am thoroughly, totally, extremely, and utterly

http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2011/06/01/cassie-clare-on-jamie-campbell-bower-mortal-instruments/

delighted.

Now, most of what I feel like I should say I said in my interview with Hollywood Crush. But a few more notes:

So, as it says in big letters on my website, I don't choose the actors for the movie. {For those of you, happily not very many, who have asked me to "reconsider" one or both of the casting choices — I do not have the power to do that even if I wanted to, which I don't. That is what it means to sell movie rights. It's like asking me to go tell the people I sold my last house to to repaint their living room, even though I no longer own the house, because you don't like the color.]

So no, I don't choose the actors, but the people who do have an enormous amount invested in finding the right one. They had casting calls in multiple countries. Then there was quite an incredible process of first just auditioning, and then auditioning for the director, and then finally auditioning with the main star (in this case, Lily Collins). Screen Gems auditioned an enormous number of people for this part, known and unknown. I first heard about Jamie when I heard from the producers that he had done an amazing read for the director. I don't know how on their radar he had been before, but I know that was enough to have him brought back to test with Lily. And that was the audition they sent me to watch.

Which I replied to with, I believe, the one word unfuckingbelievable. (Sorry for the swearing.)

He was Jace, down to the snark, and the vulnerability, and the humor and the romantic side. (You'll be happy to know one of the scenes in the audition was the "greenhouse scene", and the chemistry between Jamie and Lily was intense.) So then after that I just sat around and hoped they picked him. There were other actors in the mix (names I think you largely wouldn't recognize, at least not in a discussion of the casting for this film) and I wanted Jamie but — beyond saying I liked him, I knew I was the smallest cog in a big machine. For casting a lead role like this, all the producers (there are like eight, nine of them), the financial guys, the head of the studio, all have to agree that this guy is the best.

And they did.

So I feel lucky, kind of in that way where you might if you put a quarter in a gumball machine, hoped for a blue gumball, and got it. YAY blue gumball. But it could have gone another way.

So just to answer some quick questions I've gotten on Twitter, and then everything else is pretty much in the Hollywood Crush article:

1) When did I know Jamie was cast?

Pretty much when you all did, when I woke up and saw all the articles. I called the studio to confirm.

2) What does Lily think of him? Do they have chemistry?

They have amazing chemistry.

3) Who are they going to cast next?

I don't know. My guess would be Alec or Simon but that's just a slightly informed guess.

4) Will it take as long to cast the next characters?

Things should go faster from here on out. We're still

36. Clockwork Prince cover and chapter titles

This was first posted on Mundie Moms, but I thought I'd reproduce it here for anyone who missed it. It's the cover of Clockwork Prince, and it's Jem in front of Temple Bar on Fleet Street.

These equally were first posted over at Mundie Source but I'm going to reproduce them here as well: the chapter titles of Clockwork Prince, and their meanings.

So below is a list of the titles of the chapters in Clockwork Prince. This is in the mold of the post I made about the chapter titles of CoFA, back in February 2010. The chapters, the titles of them, the source of the title if it's from a poem, and even a few lines and spoilers. Since I'm away most of June, this will be the June Clockwork Prince teaser!

Prologue: The Outcast Dead

Will visits the Cross Bones Graveyard in London.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cross_Bones_Graveyard-0052.JPG

Chapter One: The Council Chamber

Pretty literal — the Council meets to discuss whether Charlotte is fit to run the Institute; we see a bit more of the Lightwoods, not to mention the Waylands and some other familiar families.

Chapter Two: Reparations

“Mr. Bane has been awaiting your arrival, sir,” said the footman, and stepped aside to let Will enter.

Chapter Three: Unjustifiable Death

The term, under the Accords, for a Shadowhunter killing a Downworlder without provocation.

"This was the first time she had been alone with Will in weeks."

Chapter Four: A Journey

Tessa, Will and Jem leave the Institute and in fact, London entirely.

"Gabriel Lightwood strode across the room to meet them. He really was quite tall, Tessa thought, craning her neck to look up at him. As a tall girl herself, she didn’t often find herself bending her head back to look up at men."

Chapter Five: Shades of the Past

This one is a pun that will probably only make sense upon actual reading. Althpugh one of the themes of the book is how the past affects the present.

Chapter Six: In Silence Sealed

Again the theme is hidden secrets. The title comes from a Charlotte Bronte poem. "In secret kept, in silence sealed." Tessa begins to uncover the secrets of her own origins.

Chapter Seven: I had to redact the title of this chapter. It's a spoiler. :)

“When Will truly wants something,” said Jem, quietly, “when he feels something — he can break your heart.”

Chapter Eight: The Purposes of Wrath

The title here comes from Thomas de Quncey's (yes de Quincey!) Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. The paragraph is about addiction, and both the pleasures and the pains of opium, and the chapter is not dissimilar. Also, we meet Ragnor Fell.

Chapter Nine: Fierce Midnight

This chapter ends the night begun in the previous chapter. And has some pretty hot kissing. Titled after a Swinburne poem.

Chapter Ten: The Virtue of Angels

The virtue of angels is that they cannot deteriorate; their flaw is that they cannot improve. Man's flaw is that he can deteriorate; and his virtue is that he can improve. —The Talmud

Someone rather unexpected hits Gabriel — who, really, was asking for it.

Chapter Eleven: Wild Unrest

This chapter title comes from the poem "City of Dreadful Night" by James Thomp

Non-realist fiction is liberating for the writer, and also frees the reader from a pre-existing awareness of what they're supposed to think, or how they're meant to respond. Perhaps this is why fantasy is so popular with the young adult market – it doesn’t dictate what to think or how to feel. 39. City of Fallen Angels wrapup and general answer post

First off, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who came by to leave a comment about City of Fallen Angels, or ask a question, or who came to a signing, or who just read a copy of the book! Thanks to you guys, City of Fallen Angels was #1 on the New York Times series bestseller list (which is a tough list to get onto, since it counts the sales of every book in a series), #1 on the Wall Street Journal Fiction Bestseller List, #2 on the USA Today bestseller list, which counts every book for sale in the entire country. So that's all awesome, and thank you all so much!

Now, on to the rest of the post. This is the big answer post I was talking about earlier, which answers the most-asked questions people had about Fallen Angels. It is of course very spoilery, so please AVOID if you haven't read COFA.

1) That ending? Why? I hate cliffhangers? Why is the ending so mean? Why are you so mean?

I was mildly — not entirely — surprised by how intense the reaction to the ending of COFA is. I knew it was one of those endings that comes along and kicks you in the back of the knees — everything seems fine, you're four pages from the end, what could go wrong, and then wham. I expected a love/hate relationship with it — maybe not so much fainting...

I do love a cliffhanger. The vast majority of my readers came along after City of Bones so they don't remember this, but the year between City of Bones and City of Ashes was not fun for the people who got the sibling bombshell dropped on them at the end of CoB and had to wait for CoA to see whether that was the end of Clary and Jace or not. Those people are giving the rest of you the beady eye right now.

So why the cliffhanger, in all seriousness? It is not to get you to read the next book. I do have faith you'd read the next book without a cliffhanger ending. The answer is a slight spoiler: the reason COFA ends like it does is because the next book begins weeks later. The other characters do not know what has happened, and they are panicking. I want to you to feel what the characters feel, feel their pain, feel their fear, feel their anxiety and uneasiness. I also don't want you to know more than they do, because that way, actually, does lie boredom. To really feel the gut punch this development is to Clary, the Lightwoods, and the rest, you have to experience it along with them, so that you're right where they are, emotion-wise, as the next book begins.

2) Why do you hurt Jace? Hasn't he suffered enough? But Jace and Clary were so happy before! Why put them through pain again?

A wise writer once told me: "If you don't give readers what they want, they will hate you. If you give them what they want, they will hate you even more."

Readers think they want to read about characters they love being happy. And sure, in doses, you do. But not books of it. A whole book in which Jace dances through the daises is one in which you would come to the disturbing conclusion that he had become really boring (and weird about daisies.) The reason he is loved in the first place is because we have seen him suffer. The cockiness and witty remarks are fun, but without being balanced against vulnerability and suffering, they just make him a jerk.

It is worth remembering as well that he has had two happy months, give or take, with Clary, in between City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels, before the nightmares started up. No, we didn't see it on the page, as I stick by my belief that happy couples=boring, but we will see some flashbacks in City of Lost Souls. He has a great relationship, a loving adoptive family, is gorgeous, and the best Shadowhunter of his generation. His life is not unmitigated misery.

I do get a lot of questions asking if I "don't like Clary and Jace" or "want to make Jace suffer." This — the piling on of heroic angst and classic obstacles — is not how you treat characters you "don't like." Authors torment

40. Belated book birthday/COFA comments

So I haven't had a chance to really post yet, but I wanted to say City of Fallen Angels is now out — with a pub date of April 7th in the UK it should be out everywhere — and thanks so much to everyone who's emailed and tweeted and facebooked me with their thoughts. I've been on tour and met a bunch of wonderful fans (best T-shirt so far, explicable probably only to those who follow me on Twitter):

When I get a chance I'll do a post with answers to some common questions about COFA (if you have questions, you can ask them in the comments and I'll try to get to them here or in my later answer post), in the meantime I hope you're enjoying it or that you do when you get a chance to read it. I'll say one thing: cliffhangers are a joy for authors and a torment for readers, but when they pay off, they're worth it. ;) (Holly Black's Red Glove is a great example. Check out White Cat if you haven't already!)

I expect there will be spoilers in the comments and I'm allowing them, so if you haven't read/finished the book, avoid the comments!

*I'm sorry, I don't have any info on international release dates or shipping times.

A little extra content. This is the City of Ashes Seelie Court scene from Jace's point of view. A gift I promised my Twitter followers when I hit 25,000. The scene takes place during pages 170-174 of City of Ashes, in the chapter The Seelie Court, when the Queen tricks Jace and Clary into a kiss. I even gave it a name — “Because It Is Bitter.” Because boy, is Jace bitter here. *Don't* read if you haven't read CoA!

47. The "DSAS" treasure hunt - enjoy!

(Me) Hey folks. You’re at part one of the treasure hunt for what we like to call the DSAS, or the Dirty Sexy Alley Scene. You see, when my videographer was shooting scenes for the book trailer for City of Fallen Angels, well, she shot a scene deemed “too hot for TV” by my publisher. So the footage was cut. What to do with it? Vania, ever resourceful, made a little mini-movie out of it, added some effects, and voila, the DSAS.

Now nothing happens in the DSAS that would be inappropriate in a PG-13 movie. It’s just . . . a bit passionate. But to make sure you really want to see it we decided to create a little treasure hunt across the blogosphere, featuring some of today’s top YA writers and their unwavering commitment to “makey-outy scenes.” You start here. Each blog leads you to the next blog, which will give you a letter. At the end, you’ll have all the letters and can unscramble them into the password that will allow you to watch the video. The password is Mortal Instruments-related, keep that in mind when figuring it out.

So starting here, the letter is: D

We'll have two names of winners and a list of backup names and just keep going down the list until we get to someone who is actually present to get the prize. You can't win if you don't show up, so be nice and don't RSVP unless you're actually going to be there!}

I think it will be tons of fun, I've never done a midnight release before, and I am psyched. We will do our best to entertain you in the two hours between ten and midnight with readings and trivia games and Q and A's and perhaps light juggling.

49. Barnes and Noble Special Editon — Letter from Jace to Clary

So those who've checked out City of Fallen Angels over on Barnes and Noble.com may have noticed an interesting little splashy image on the front cover:

What this means basically is that Barnes and Noble in the US is going to be carrying a special edition of COFA with some special content inside it.

The B&N Exclusive Edition

In City of Glass, Book 3 of The Mortal Instruments series, Jace leaves a letter in Clary's room before he leaves for a life-threatening mission. The content of this letter has been the subject of much speculation among Mortal Instruments fans, but it has never been revealed until now. In the B&N exclusive version of CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS, Jace's letter to Clary will be enclosed in the book as a separate piece, designed to look as if it was handwritten on stationery."

I had initially written the letter and given it to my publisher as something that could be a tour extra — something I could have printed up to hand out to people who come to my signings. But they loved the letter so much they wanted to make it available more widely and Barnes jumped on the idea of carrying it. Everyone agreed they wanted it to look really amazing, so it's handwritten — no handwriting fonts — and sealed with the Morgenstern wax seal.

Just to answer questions: No, that doesn't mean no tour giveaway — I now have something else to give away on tour, which is a sort of short story told via postcards between the characters during the gap between City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels. Yes, this edition is only available in the US at Barnes and Noble stores and from their online store. Yes, that means it is not available from other stores. No, this is not a limited edition. All City of Fallen Angels books sold by B&N will have it. Yes, we have offered the letter to all my international publishers, so there is a good chance it will show up in your country, too. See below for stores in other countries carrying the letter. Yes, Barnes does ship overseas but I don't know their shipping policies exactly, but I'm sure it says on the site.

ETA: CHAPTERS/INDIGO WILL ALSO BE CARRYING THE SPECIAL EDITION WITH LETTER IN CANADA.

BOOKTOPIA WILL BE CARRYING IT IN AUSTRALIA.

Reelz Channel has a fun game of "Cast the Mortal Instruments movie" going on. If you want to make your voice heard for your favorite actor, now's your chance! And if you don't like any of their picks, you can write your own in at the bottom.
