28. Simple Pleasures

Here I am, doing what I enjoy most.

I've just finished a long walk through one of the most beautiful places in the world with two of my favourite friends in the world.  In this picture, we are drying out in The Old Smithy cafe, our wet socks steaming on the radiator, large mugs of tea in our hands and in front of us a gut-buster Full English - salty bacon, fried egg, perfectly blackened sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans and chips.

These are the simple pleasures of an author's life in the Peak District!

29. Schools Workshops: Look Where We Live!

I am just about to launch a new programme of environmental and literacy workshops for schools within the Peak District National Park.

Look Where We Live is aimed at children growing up in the Peak District.  The workshops give children the chance to tell the world what they think about their own environment.

Children explore their surroundings using environmental games, role play and other thought-provoking activities.  They use descriptive writing, poetry, drama, illustration and video to communicate their thoughts and feelings to others.  The best work will be published on the project website for friends, family, residents, visitors and environmental managers to see.

The workshops are supported by the Peak District National Park Authority and East Midlands Development Agency, under the Live & Work Rural programme.

Come back soon to find out more!

32. Thanks John Hegley

My doggie don't wear glasses
So they're lying when they say
That a dog looks like its owner
Aren't they?

This is my tip top favourite poem - it's by John Hegley.

35. A London Party with Famous People!

Ooooh, I LOVE my job!

What are the loveliest things about being an author?
1.  Writing
2.  Spending time doing silly wordy rhymy things with children
3.  Catching the train down to London to meet the people who do all the hard work.

I mean of course, going to meet my publisher(s).   I have just returned from a great mid-week weekend at the Hachette Christmas Party.  It wasn't a pass-the-parcel sort of party, though this would also have been fun, it was a stand around drinking and chatting sort of party.  It probably sounds boring to some of you, but when you throw in a few of your literary heroes, it all suddenly becomes more interesting!

It's soooo tempting to name drop, but really, I shouldn't....oh, OK, you've twisted my arm!  Well, I met the truly inspired Mick Inkpen and his wife.  If you don't know already, Mick a household name in children's books and the father of Wibbly Pig and Kipper.  Wibbly Pig is now on TV, and Mick is working on some new characters for a book he is writing with his daughter.

I also met the lovely Guy Parker-Rees.  His Giraffes Can't Dance is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, so Guy is involved in all sorts of Giraffey activities.

Chris Mould (Something Wickedly Weird), drew a skull and crossbones for my children, and I had a very inspiring chat with Cressida Cowell about the new film-of-her-book,  How To Train a Dragon, which is out in March.  The trailer looks fabulous, so do check it out if you get a chance.

http://www.howtotrainyourdragon.com/

Oh, and Lynne Chapman, and Cassia Thomas, and Alan Durant and... and...so many other people!

I love going down to London, because most of the time I don't go further than town and back.  I take my children to school, walk the dog, and spend the rest of my time at home working and not talking to any other human beings.  It's very very quiet where I live, so it's amazing to go down to the bustle and activity of the city.

It's also super-lovely to come back home.
Must poke the fire......

36. Gluing, sticking and rhyming at The Children's Hospital, Sheffield

Last week I spent a very happy day with some children at The Children's Hospital, Sheffield.   We had a great time making rhyme machines, and rhino mobiles and making up rhymes.  The hospital has a number of amazing classrooms, to help children keep up with their schoolwork while they are receiving treatment.  The staff are amazing as are the children, so I can't wait for my next session in a couple of weeks' time.

Thanks go to Decathlon, for giving me a trolley to cart my stuff around with, and to John Lewis for donating some lovely ribbons and bibbons and sparkly stuff.

39. Hallowe'en

We're getting ready for Hallowe'en, so here is a funny rhyme to get you in the mood.

Vampire Fred

When Freddy the vampire went shopping
The shopkeeper said, "You look ill."
Fred rolled his red eyes
Saying, "I'm not surprised"
"Just look at the size of this bill"

41. Knit Yourself a Poem!

Visit the National Poetry Society website, and you can knit yourself a poem!
Simply type your poem in, and it will appear in knitted squares before your eyes!

Top tip.  Write one line at a time in the box, then do two paragraph returns.  This gives a good space between lines.
Have fun!

42. More Bats - by Jess, 10

There are bats in my attic
And I know they are there
Sleeping in the darkness
Of their little batty lair

When I go to bed at bed time
I hear them squeak and fly
Then go down stairs to tell my dad
But he thinks it's a lie

I found my old rope ladder
And attached it to the sill
Then I opened up the little door
And felt an icy chill

I smelled a sickly stench
Of wee, and poo and mice
I smelled a horrid smell
That didn't smell that nice

It smelled of rotten eggshells
Of cabbages and loos
It smelled of something nasty
That I think was sloppy poos

There are bats in my attic
And I know they are there
Sleeping in the darkness
Of their little batty lair.

Well done Jess, what a fantastic poem!

43. There are Bats up in Our Attic

I wrote this poem because my daughter swears she heard bats above her ceiling in the night.  Bats are very very special because they are so rare and clever.  If you have bats in your attic make sure you take good care of them.

There are bats up in our attic
I can hear their flapping wings
When I'm lying in my bed at night
Thinking ghostly things

My mum says it's just squirrels
My dad says its a bird
But I know the truth, it's bats alright
Cos this is what I've heard.

Flap flap
Squeak squeak
Rustle, scrabble, plop
I dread to think what kind of stuff
Those little batties drop.

The attic must be covered
In their little batty pellets
They're piling up above my head
I'm surprised no one can smell it

Today I found a ladder
And climbed up in the loft
To try and see their silky wings
And downy fur so soft

I saw their great enormous ears
And little mousy faces
As they dangled in a tidy line
Snoring in their places

Yes, there's bats up in my attic
They're tiny and they're rare
And it isn't true that flying bats
Get tangled in your hair

For bats are very clever
They can see their way around
Not with their eyes like we do
But by making tiny sounds

While I'm at school, they sleep and sleep
Cozy in our loft
Then fly around at night time
Catching bugs and moths

So I'm happy as I lie in bed
With the covers pulled up tight
Chattering with my special friends
In the middle of the night.

Andrew's Batty Poem:

Bats Bats
They wear big hats
The don't like cats
That sit on mats

44. Incredible!

Kseniya Simonova is a Ukrainian artist who just won Ukraine's version of "America's Got Talent." She uses a giant light box, dramatic music, imagination and "sand painting" skills to interpret Germany's invasion and occupation of Ukraine during WWII.

45. There's a Spider in my Bedroom

There's a spider in my bedrrom
Its legs are long and hairy
Its sitting just above the door
Looking mean and scary

I' d call my mum to help me
But she won't be any use
she's just as scared as I am
when a spider's on the loose

My dad is not much better
He'd poke it with a broom
Then the spider would just run and hide
Somewhere in my room

It might end up inside my shoe
and lurk there till the morning
Then when I put my foot inside
Attack me without warning

I don't dare go out through the door

Cos it might drop on my head
So I'll be stuck for ever more
Stranded in my bed.

46. Insects

Here is a poem I wrote in my head, in the car, just now.

Insects
Have six legs
They lay eggs
But not the sort you can eat on toast.

Most of all
Insects
Crawl

49. Endings are always the hardest!

Why is it always so hard to say goodbye?

Am I just a starter and not a completer-finisher?

Probably!

I find endings so very difficult, especially in a picture book where you haven't got much room to play with.  And there is always the conflict between wanting my characters to learn their lesson, versus wanting to let the little anarchists get their own way.  Well hopefully my latest story gives a bit of both.  Here's how it starts:

I wanted a train set, some skates and a cat
And Kim wanted drums and a new cricket bat
Most kids ask their parents, and get their own way
But ours are so MEAN we know just what they'll say

"No Tim, you can't have a dog or a mouse!
"They're much too expensive.  They'll stink out the house!
"A drum kit's too noisy
"And where would it go?"

Our parents will always say no, No, NO NO!

So we sat in my bedroom till four in the morning
To think up a plan while our parents were snoring
And Kim said, "Let's brainwash them while they're in bed!"
So we taped a long message, and here's what it said...

Will the kids get what they want? Want to read more?

Hard luck!  You'll just have to wait!

50. Google Me!

Yesterday I went to Waterstones to see if my book was in.  It wasn't.  Which isn't surprising as it's not launched till 1 October.  Still, I looked myself up on their in-store computer.  I just couldn't help leaving the page open, showing the beautiful front covers of CHIPS and Rhino? What Rhino?

Then I went into the iPhone store and googled myself on a few iPhones.  I left the shop with several phones tuned into to my listings on Amazon!

Call me narsissistic!

Bet you would have done the same!
