33. Artists Help Japan

Artists Help Japan – Earthquake & Tsunami 2011

On March 11, a 9.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan near the city of Sendai. The earthquake generated a massive tsunami with waves as high as 30 feet, immediately resulting in floods, fires and the closure of airports and transit systems. Thousands of people are either dead or missing, and homes, fields and towns have been destroyed by flooding.
Artists Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the needs of survivors through short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities. The fund is founded by Dice Tsutsumi, an art director at Pixar Animation Studios. Dice was also behind the 2008 Totoro Forest Project to help preserve Sayama Forest in Japan and the Sketchtravel Project.
We are partnering with Give2Asia, which has a local team based in Tokyo, to assess the current situation and to obtain more information on the needs of survivors. Give2Asia helped the Totoro Forest Project, well-known in the animation industry, efficiently send funds to Japan in 2008 and has a great reputation when it comes to humanitarian efforts in Asia.

Please make a contribution today to help the survivors! Below is the link to where you can send your help.

37. IF: Ripple

"It's hard to make a ripple on oil soaked water. But throw enough stones and you will!"
A weekend project with my lovely daughter for Illustration Friday. It's been a while since my last entry for Illustration Friday, so I decided to paint with my daughter Mia. She loves to paint with me since she was 2 years old. She sometimes wakes me up at 2AM when she was 2 just so she can paint with me! It's always a blast whenever I work and she was around to bug me. Not always fruitful, but it's a lot of FUN!
Anyway, this project is to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. You can check more info on http://ripplesketches.blogspot.com. Each sketchcard is $10.00. Every penny is donated. The two Non-Profits that are benefitting are The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center.

50. Aurelie's moon: Rough sketch

There's something about rough pencil sketches that I like which brings so much life and energy into it.  I think it is the power of rough quick strokes that gives you the illusion of life and what goes in an artists mind and his desire to bring life on paper, and sometimes-- it's just his rambling thoughts wandering on a sheet of paper.

Actually, on this one... it's both! I'm still unhappy with the finished version and still debating about some of the elements for the book. I'll post more about my process on future posts. I've been busy these past few months at work but my passion and desire to work on this book hasn't diminished. It's been a real challenge juggling work and personal work at times, but I'm having a blast so far!

Anyway, below is one of the projects I did recently. I am proud to be a part of this animated film and thankful for getting a chance to work with a few of my fellow ex-Disney Artists. Below is the DVD cover for the pilot of Superbook 2 where I got the pleasure to work as a Character Designer. For those who has seen it back in the 80's, this is for you, and your kids! I designed the characters of David and Goliath plus the incidental characters and some BG elements/prop designs. Anyway, I hope you'll grab a copy when it comes out!
