101. Artist Friends and Blogging

I have found a new feature on blogger. Well it maybe not actually be new, but it's new to me. I am not even sure I can explain it and do it justice. . .

Basically it is a place where you can add blogs that you want to follow or read the content as the artist/author updates it. I have a ton I follow. I like being connected to other artists. Don't you?

Anyway if you would like to get a look at the blogs I follow, you can see them on my profile page. Here is a link:

http://www.blogger.com/profile/17792716775800425045

You might find some pretty cool artist blogs on my list that you want to follow yourself. If your blog isn't listed on my follow list and you would like to kind of become blog buddies, just let me know I'd be happy to add you to my list.

Maybe we can get a whole group of us who can kind of support each other. It can be a lonely space inside your studio alone all day.

I used to use Jacketfalap to read my blogs, and still kind of do, but I think Google's Blogger is wonderful that you can actually tell someone you are following their blog.

Okay back to work for me. . .Take Care!

103. Self Publishering Poll

I have a poll on my blog at the top by the header.

I am becoming very curious about Self-Publishers. I know there are varying feelings about it.

The poll would only take a second. . .and I will post the results later for everyone to learn from.

Thanks!

104. Review - Paws, Claws, Hands and Feet!!!

The Well-Red Child had a wonderful review of Paws, Claws, Hands and Feet which is a book I illustrated for Sylvan Dell Publishing! She called it a fantasy book!!! Wahoo!!! I love fantasy books. . .don't you?

Paws, Claws, Hands, and Feet by Kimberly Hutmacher, illustrated by Sherry Rogers

In this fantasy story, two kids, a girl and a boy, wake up in the middle of the night and take a journey around the world, visiting a lot of animal habitats: the jungle, the Savannah, the arctic, and the outback. Their bed magically takes them from place to place, and they meet tons of animals along the way.

I'm the first to admit that I'm not a fan of rhyming picture books, but this one works and flows nicely. The plethora of animals, habitats, and action verbs along the way make it a great book for learning purposes, but kids won't even realize they're learning. As with all of Sylvan Dell's books, a section in the back features activities and resources for further learning. In our house, my daughter is fascinated by all of Sherry Rogers's animal illustrations, and she loves to see where the bed is going to land next.

105. Drawn to Life

I am 25 pages into the first volume of Drawn to Life, 20 Golden years of Disney Master Classes and already I can see the total value of owning this book. It makes me wish I had a photographic memory.

It has discussed wonderful things like tangent lines why not to use them. I already knew about tangents and maybe you did too, but it shows tangent lines in unexpected places. Places I have never heard discussed before.

It also discusses motion and movement and how it effects proportions. Eye movement has also been discussed. . .

Here is a link to amazon to learn more. . .

Onward and upward. . .enjoy your day!

106. New Drawing Books!

Sorry I have been so remiss in posting. For a while I was doing the sketches for the latest book I am illustrating for Sylvan Dell. Can't say enough about them! They are just the best people. Anyway I guess I got a bit tired after the endless sketching and have been working at a slower pace and letting my personal life creep in a bit. Not really been on the internet much. . .

I will show the cover of the book soon. The title is Newton and Me! Love it!

Anyway I hardly ever buy art books, but just today I bought three!! I am very excited.

You can read more about the books by following the links which are actually the rectangles below.

The first one is called Drawn to Life, 20 Golden years of Disney Master Classes Volume 1

The second is called Drawn to Life, 20 Golden years of Disney Master Classes Volume 2

Your probably asking yourself why I would buy Disney art books. Well I think there is a lot to be learned from Animator books. . .don't you.

And lastly I bought The Art and Feel of Making it Real

I'll let you know what I think when I get them. I am pretty Darn excited!!

109. Earth Day is Every Day

I am not one to preach about religion or my beliefs but I DVR'd Oprah the other day, which I usually do, that way I can pick and choose which ones I want to watch. I watched her Earth Day show and boy was I shocked and did I learn a lot.

I try to walk in our hilly neighborhood for exercise and usually take a bottle of water with me. Well I started to feel guilty about that, so I started to re-use the bottles and then I heard that isn't a good idea because of bacteria, even if you wash them. So I purchased the red water bottle below about a month ago.

After watching Oprahs Earth Day show I was moved to buy the two grocery bags below at my local Whole Foods Market.

If you have time go on over to Op
rah's website and see some of the wonderful resources she has set up for people to use.

Here is a link:

Oprah

One of the biggest things that Oprah said was "Currently, scientists believe the world's largest garbage dump isn't on land…it's in the Pacific Ocean. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch stretches from the coast of California to Japan, and it's estimated to be twice the size of Texas. "This is the most shocking thing I have seen."

I love nature. I am an avid gardener and spend as much time as I can outside. So I am starting to take on more responsibility and try to help clean and conserve our natural resources.

Let's ban together and help out. . .Why not buy re-useable bags and stick them in your car? If you drink bottled water why not buy a re-usable bottle.

Below is an illustration I did for an educational job. . .thought it was appropriate.

117. Grand Re-Opening of the Picture-Bookies Showcase

After a long hiatus the PICTURE BOOKIES SHOWCASE is reopening. We really look forward to welcoming everyone back.

The guidlines are a bit different this time in order to make it easier for participants to post and enjoy the gallery.

  • The artwork submitted must be geared to the CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION MARKET

  • The participants may post whenever they wish, and hopefully that will be often

  • There will be no weekly or monthly theme

  • There will be no comments

  • Each illustration should be labeled with a title or subject, illustrators name, website or blog, and the medium you used to create the work

An advantage of this showcase is that if you have no website or blog of your own, you can still get your work noticed on a professional site for free.

So why not go on over and check out the new Picture-Bookies Showcase!

118. What Should You Scan Your Art As?

Marion Edlridge has been experimenting with scanning and lossing contrast etc. She has been shairng her experience with a listserve that I belong to and I have learned so much.

One of the woman shared this:

In a commercial environment, images are first scanned in LAB. This is the largest color space available, very close to what our eye can see. Her husband archived his client's work in the LAB color space and considered it the "original". From this "original" he converted to RGB, sRGB, CMYK or grayscale, depending on the need.

Adobe RGB is the next largest color space and the appropriate scanning mode if you don't have LAB option.

sRGB is best for web (its a much smaller color space than Adobe RGB and intended for reproducing web safe color)

To see some of this wonderful experiment that Marion has been doing go on over to her blog. While your over there check out her wonderful art. I am a huge fan of her art.

123. Illustration Friday - Subtract

This is an illustration from Sort it Out! a book I illustrated, which is published by Sylvan Dell Publishing and written by Barbara Mariconda.

It's a book about Packy the packrat whose collection is getting out of hand. His mother has told him to sort his things and put them away. Being a good little packrat Packy does as he is told. . .the only problem is that as he is sorting he notices that his collection is getting smaller. Someone is taking the opportunity to subract items from Packy's collection. Who can it be? Well I am not telling. . .you have to read the book to find out.

I had a great time illustrating this book and am honored to have worked with such a great manuscript (author) an incredible team of people on this project.

Sort it Out! is up for the children's choice awards!!! How cool is that?

Hope you all have a great week.

125. Kersplatypus is up for the Charlotte Award

The 2010 Charlotte Committee has finalized the ballot for their suggested reading lists for the next award. They will present the ballot on March 31, 2009 at the annual NYSRA Conference.

Kersplatypus, written by Susan Mitchell published by Sylvan Dell and illustrated by ME is on the reading list finals and up for an Charlotte award. Only ten books made the ballot in each category for the 2010 ballot so I am honored and very excited! Wahoo for us!

The award was named for the main character in E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web

The purpose of the Charlotte Award is to encourage students to read outstanding literature and ultimately become life-long readers. Additionally, the award recognizes the authors and illustrators of such literature. Students in New York State will read titles on the ballot and vote for their favorites. Votes were tallied, and the winners received their awards at the Annual NYSRA Statewide Conference.

Keep your fingers crossed!
