51. The FREE - MUSE ONLINE Writing Conference was a HUGE SUCCESS!

I now have enough strength back in my fingers
to
BLOG about the 2009 MUSE ONLINE Writing Conference
(Oct 12th to 18th) - and it was all FREE!

This is my third year with Lea Schizas, and her band of intrepid Publishers, Agents, and Established Writers. Lea's idea is to provide a full week of daily workshops, and one-on-one chat lounge Q & A sessions, on various aspects of writing (for adults and children) and promoting your books.

This year, my daily workshop was titled,
"How to Write as Tight As Granny's New Girdle!"
I also offered a Daily Q & A Session in several Chat Lounges.

I was deluded enough to offer a critique of the first page of those attending my workshop. I wanted to advise them on how to make sure their first pages were tight and terrific, and had a WOW factor that would grab an editor's interest.

Holy COW, mates, I was swamped.

I ended up critiquing just on 100 pages in all - and many of them were far longer! My brain and my fingers learned how to move super fast. Of course now that it is all over, I can finally take a bathroom break. HEY, a week is a l-o-n-g time!

I also discovered that writers do not read instructions well. Many did not include their word count or genre, as requested. Not did they double space very often - again as requested. Yet I loved reading those pages that really had a cool WOW factor, or when a writer tightened that first page so well, Granny wore a big smile. YEA!!

And those Q & A chat sessions were fast and furious. No time to dither about answers. Great practice for keeping my focus on the topic at hand - writing! Adrenalin bubbled, pushed, and drove me to keep at it all week. On Monday it was all past tense. My hands were stiff, and if you had asked my name, I would've had to stop and think. . . I felt like a pricked balloon.

Looking back over a distance of a few days, I see MUSE 2009 as an awesome experience. I got to see wonderful writing, not so wonderful writing, and all the stages in-between. I really hope my co

54. A MIXED BAG - News and Celebration!

Okay folks, I know It's Been a While
Since I BLOGGED
.

Listed below are my excuses:

* I am in the throes of ghost writing a book for a client.
*
My many critique clients have also kept me "on the go!"

*
PLUS - the ever present necessity to promote my
already published books.

*
Scrounging the time to actually write
something NEW myself.

**************

I also worked on another book as "editorial adviser." This was for Deborah Slover of Leader Garden Press. illustrations by Darlene Warner.

"U.N.I.Q.U.E . KIDS" -
Growing My Leadership Garden

This inspirational book will help you grow the unique leader within your child. In the human garden, leadership development begins at home. Told as a fable, the lessons contained are real:

Be nonjudgmental - Do not enable -
Use empathy - Prune gossip -
Eliminate Blame - Eradicate victimization

Imagine a world where these practices are the norm.
More details available HERE

* A wonderful guide for home schooling parents, and others who want the children of today to grow up with fine leadership qualities, honesty, and a sure moral compass.

55. Cool RATTLESNAKE RECIPES and e-BOOKS Galore

First, let's get the Rattler Recipe out of the way.

Yummy
Rattlesnake Chilli(Because my latest book is about rattlers, how Pa catches
them, and what he wishes Gran would cook them up as )

This recipe comes from my Aussie mate, Susan Stephenson. Susan owns and runs the Book Chook Blog. How a Down-under sheila like her got hold of a rattler recipe is a huge mystery - no rattlers in Australia, mate.

And the first person who can tell me what a Chook is,
wins a FREE Audio of me reading one of my
Wild and Wonderful Aussie animal
tales + the illustrations.

INGREDIENTS:

First, catch your rattler!

Then visit Gran's Kitchen and discover how a 6ft rattlesnake
can become YOUR dinner, along with several other
recipes guaranteed to make Mom feel faint.

Now, on with the serious business of
e-BOOKS for your KIDS.

First, let me state that that I am absolutely certain books in ALL forms of paper are here to stay. NO QUESTION. Cuddling at bedtime, a child in your arms and a beloved book between you, is one of life's great pleasures. The memories these story times bring live with us for a lifetime.

However, there are other times and other places - car travel, rainy days, summer boredom etc. These days your child is computer savvy, the world is advancing in mega bites. Reading a cool new flip book (e-book) on a screen will often HOOK a kid who otherwise might not bother reading. What I am getting at, is that there sh

56. Harold Underdown's take on Children's Books and the Recession of 2008-09

For years,
Harold Underdown's Purple Crayon has been the

about all aspects of writing
and publishing books
for children.

Working in Children's Books and the
Recession of 2008-09

(The Purple Crayon Blog January 2009 / Revised June 2009)

For more than a year the attention of everyone working in the U.S. children's books publishing industry has been focused on the economy. And though 2009 began with some reasonably good news about retail book sales in 2008, and early information for 2009 suggested only modest declines, we still feel uncertain about the future of our industry. I've followed the news and write these comments to put what's been happening in context, to share my thoughts about what could happen in the coming months, and to suggest how we should respond.

Keep in mind that publishing generally does not move in synch with the economy as a whole, and children's book publishing does not always move in synch with publishing as a whole. One major cause of the lack of synchronicity is the impact of school and library funding, changes in which take time to take effect. I'll come back to that....

publishing is affected READ ON HERE.

Dotty's Topsy Tale, the newest in the Topsy Tales
series written by Donna J. Shepherd and illustrated by
Kevin Scott Collier, features Dotty, a pink hippo that
doesn't quite fit in. With help from her best friend,
Chizzy, she finds she can be happy with herself no matter
what her color. The book introduces a purple baby hippo,
Violet, to gently explore the topic of discrimination.
Suggested age for readers: 2-5.

REVIEW by Donna Johnson, WWAHM.com -
JKidsCrew Butterfly Homeschool Journal

Dotty's Topsy Tale
is a book that has all of the
features our family looks for when shop for books.
and is published by a great Christian publishing
company that caters to families with younger children.
It is highly recommended as a self-esteem booster and
affirmer for kids and is part 2 of a sequel. It delves
into the topic of discrimination and supports community-
building values and living by a higher standard.

It espouses the value of change -- we don't always
have to live the way we were raised to live, especially
when that was based in untruth or ignorance. These
are much needed topics of discussion for children to
understand while they are young and developing a
foundation for their character that will carry them
through the rest of their living years in this world. In
the face of all of the infamous leadership failures we've
all witnessed in recent years, high-quality character
development really needs to be at the top of the list of
priorities for all educators in public, private, and home
schools. Bravo, Donna! The illustrations are stunning
due to Kevin's use of contrasting and complimentary
colors. Our oldest is an aspiring artist and really enjoyed
the pictures. This is our official review as we have
added this book into our homeschool curriculum for
2009.

Now, let's find out what makes Donna
Shepherd,
the writer, tick. Here's a little
Q&A for her.

:
1 - Please tell us why you write for children, and
if you also have an upcoming book, as well as
your current one.
;
Today on the web, I saw where someone said she was
bored. I thought, "I've never felt that way in my life!"
I think I'm about five years old on the inside, and my
mind is always running, thinking about poems, stories,
and ways to engage child and make them smile. I've
written about an imaginary land with green monkeys,
pink hippos, and singing snakes, about gunky teeth and
a lonely lightning bug. My files are filled with whimsy.
;
My next book is called Poodle and Doodle and is
written from the point of view of a snooty poodle and
the 'new dog' - a labradoodle she has to learn to get
along with. Jack Foster is illustrating and it's under
contract with Guardian Angel Publishing (G.A.P.) I'm
posting pics and sneak peeks of the book
at 'Oodles of Fun
:
2 - Do you usually write about specific topics,
and are you always happy with your illustrations?
:
I wrote Topsy Turvy Land which Kevin Scott Collier
illustrated, and it was his idea to take some of the fun
animals I had come up with and write about each one.
Other than that, I'm pretty diverse in my topics.
:
3 - Are your friends and relatives thrilled you
are published – or couldn’t care less?
:
My family is very supportive. Although my husband is
never quite sure what I'm up to, he's thrilled when he
sees the books arrive - and even more so when they sell!
My son and daughter both brainstorm with me and
critique my work - sometimes quite brutally. I appreciate
their candor, and feel it's made me a better writer.
:
4 - When eBook Readers eventually fall in price,
do you think e-Books will become far more popular
– after all, they can hold dozens of books –
musical as well as voice.
:
I think that children are amazingly adaptive and have
no fear of technology. I'm sure they'll love them. I would
hate to see eBooks replace print completely though.
There's nothing like curling up before bedtime to read
a good story to your child, and the way a book feels.
:
5 – What do you find is the easiest way to sell
your books – school visits, library visits,
bookstore signings, or some other way?
:
I teach workshops and speak and have found I sell the
most books when I have presented first. If you connect
with your audience, they are more likely to purchase a
product from you.
:
6 – Do you consciously choose story themes
that you know will sell, or just write what is
in your heart.
:
Oh, I wish I could write a best seller! But no, I write
as I'm inspired, and love every minute of it.
:
7 – Do you have an agent, and if not, would
you ever ask a writing friend to recommend
you to their agent?
:
I have an agent for my 'grownup' writing, but not for
the children's. I probably wouldn't ask a friend for a
referral, but that might be a good idea for some, I
suppose. I never want to impose on my friendships.
:
Thanks so much for hosting me, Margot!
:
It was fun Donna, and entirely my pleasure mate!

61. ROBIN FALLS KIDS - Great Things Happening Thanks to R.R.W.

Okay folks, April Robins is at it again.
And this time she has J.D. Holiday
as her #1 henchwoman!!

I am still not sure exactly what this April Robins wants from
me, but to date I have said YES to her Facebook invite to join
the new Robin Falls Book Garden: networking there and
elsewhere. The idea being to promote R.R.W. member's Books.
At her request, I have also added two coloring sheets (from 2 of
my books) to their Facebook site.

Now I come to what I suspect is the nitty-gritty of April's
latest idea. I think it is to help us writers become better known,
sell our books, and help parents and teachers HOOK kid's interest.

Ta-dah!!

Robin Falls Kids is sponsored by the Facebook groups
"Red River Writers," and will draw many
guest from its 2,400 members.

Did I get it right Robin?
If not, please correct me in the Comments below.

Children’s book authors, April Robins and J.D. Holiday, will act
as your Hosts. They will open the gate at Robin Falls, and
welcome you into their Book Garden. They will accompany
you through the Garden and introduce you to their children’s
book and YA author/illustrator friends. In the Garden,
masterpieces of art and words are continually blooming, and
ready to be picked. So please sit in a circle on the green grass
and listen to the storytellers paint with words. They will be glad
to answer your questions once they have finished their story

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION

Or you will become confused like me, and probably
miss something really GREAT!

Currently, Robin Falls Kids is in a networking mode. We are
making new friends and drawing from old. We have even opened
a Facebook Fan page called Robin Falls Kids. The link is

entertain children at home, schools, libraries, parties, and
book clubs.

64. BEWARE! A Rant about Twitter, FaceBook and MORE

Okay Mates, Consider Yourself Warned. . .

.

I am indulging in a rant!

First, let's consider all those social networking sites.
They act like vampires: only they suck the hours,
minutes and seconds of your day, rather than your
blood.

Time flies when you're Twittering away life's
other opportunities.

This moment-by-moment draining of our daily time
includes Facebook, and all the other places where folks
are lured by two words: Social Networking. The words
sound so innocuous, yet they have changed the
socializing habits of teens, young adults, baby
boomers, and golden oldies alike.

OKAY, CONFESSION TIME:
I am a Twittering Twit, and an active FaceBook,
Linkedin, and Jacket Flap member + one or two others
I joined in a moment of weakness, but have since let
slide.

Why did I jump on this techno band wagon? The honest
answer is that I wanted to broaden my "branding" as an
author of children's books, a manuscript critiquer, and
possibly sell more books. As you can gather, my goal was
business rather than social.

Yet, for all the hours, days, and months I spent
cultivating the icons of social networking, the main
upsurge has been in my Manuscript Critique business.
I am grateful for that, believe me. However, those
Twitters, FaceBook texts, and Linkedin chatter made
hardly a ripple in my book sales. And don't forget my
Pinging after every blog entry, my Feedburner hook-up,
and installing all those hot and cool widgets that we're
told are absolutely essential.

Doing this ate up a considerable amount of time. If I
also dived into the many social offers and chatting-up that
goes on, I guess eating and sleeping would have to stop.
Divorce would be next!

So, I'm thinking the words Social Networking should
have given me a BIG clue - It's social, dumb-cluck, not
for business.

BUT I DIGRESS . . . back to the social rant!
Remember when parents thought TV and the telephone
were the spawn of the Devil? Hah! Not today, mates.
Computers and the e-mail craze led us to this Devil's
Spawn! And YES, I was definitely a GUILTY PARTY!
Then, along came common cell phone use, with it's ever
expanding techno capabilities. Mix in a little help from
the computer boom, and suddenly we had the makings
of a major time frittering enabler in our eager little
hands.

Once upon a time, Social Networking meant getting
together in the afternoon for a card game, or a chat
over coffee and homemade cookies. Or, maybe a few
friends over for a casual meal. Whatever happened to
reading a good book in the evening, and sharing time
and fun doings with your kids, spouse and friends?

Birds were meant to twitter - humans, not so much!
And networks, FaceBook and the like, simply allow
you to write more words in each individual post. Think
about it! When ginormous numbers of people world-
wide, feel a need to text ( mostly) complete strangers,
and beg to "friend" them, surely we should ask
ourselves - WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS (social)
PICTURE?

Shouldn't people interact face-to-face at least 50% of
the time? Shouldn't we ask ourselves why texting on
a cell-phone, or crouched over a keyboard, is
emotionally fulfilling to so many people?

Better yet - ASK YOURSELF!

71. SNEAKY WAYS to PROMOTE your BOOKS, your SERVICES and YOU!

SOMETIMES, Sneaky IS GOOD!

Fun articles about YOU, by someone else, can
be a sneaky way of promoting yourself,
your books, and your services.

An out-of-the-box way of promotion, is to have people interview
you - or in this case, have the interviewer's pet interview YOUR
pet. This is the brainchild of author, and great ideas woman,
Mayra Calvani.

"Pets and Their Authors"

My human is named Margot Finke, and she writes

for children. If she finds out I’m
“grassing” on her, the whole
balance of our feline/human
relationship will crash. So be
warned, I WILL take the

computer is for her, what catnip is for me -

"Books You Download -
A Trend of the Future,
or a Passing Craze? "

E-Books, like hard copy books of all genres, vary in
quality. As e-Books gain readership and popularity,
more-and-more care is being taken to make sure the
quality of the writing and art-work is really good. It
has taken time for writers and e-Publishers to
understand that standards of excellence DO matter,
no matter what form the finished book takes.

After he's finished his homework and his chores for the day, 8-
year-old Skye Vaughn-Perling likes to read Dr. Seuss. He's a
particular fan of the hijinks that ensue when the elephant
Horton hears strange voices emanating from a dust speck in

"Horton Hears a Who."
He doesn't read from a dog-eared copy of the children's classic,
though. Skye, who lives in Agoura Hills, often reads on his
computer, pressing the arrow button when he wants to turn
a page. Sometimes the characters move around on the screen

like animated cartoons on TV. If he wants, Skye can have the
computer read a book to him while he's curled up in bed.

75. Can Ruthie's Hippo Steal My Book?

The cover of my latest picture book has arrived

"RUTHIE AND THE HIPPO'S FAT BEHIND!"

Publisher: Guardian Angel Publishing
(G.A.P. specializes in T.L.C.)

But I have a bone to pick with
the illustrator, K.C Snider.
. .

How come that hippo on the cover looks so darned cute and
happy, K.C? I suspect you've snuck in a limelight hog, bent on
stealing Ruthie's thunder.

See, poor Ruthie is all upset about having to leave behind
everything she knows and loves, and move to some dumb ole
place her parents chose. No Hippo with a wobbly pink behind +
a fat pink smirk, should out-shine my Ruthie - right?

* Is this hologram of a Hippo going to steal my book??
* Will pink Hippos proliferate?
* Can K.C. ( that sneaky illustrator) make the Pink-o-liscious
Hippo kidnap Ruthie's tale of woe?
* Where will this pink pretender rule next - THE WORLD?

PLEASE help me thwart K.C. Snider's evil plans. Help Ruthie
kick this limelight guzzling Hippo OUT on his big, fat, pink
behind!!

If we succeed in saving her from you know who, Ruthie and
her story will be out in soft cover and Download - A.S.A.P!

H-E-L-L-LP . . . !

Oh, and if you want to see how K.C Snider helped other
characters steal the picture books she illustrated,
