About Allan Ahlberg
During the 1960’s Allan Ahlberg studied teacher training in Sunderland. After working in different fields he became a primary school teacher and worked with children for ten years. During this period he met his future wife, Janet. Janet studied graphic design and became an Illustrator. This led to the couple becoming a formidable force in children’s literary when she got bored with her vocation and requested Allan to write a children’s book for her to illustrate. Because he worked with children, he slotted into this role of writing children’s books naturally, and during the following years the became one of Britain’s most successful author/Illustrator teams producing children’s literary of the highest quality.
They were influenced by comics and cartoons and produced masterpieces such as Peepo (reflecting Allan’s childhood as the “Peepo Baby”, Each Peach Pear Plum and The Baby's Catalogue. Classics in their own right, with rhythmic prose, their books appealed to both young children and parents.
Their main goal was to produce William Morris books at Penguin prices, and by combining words and pictures rather than concentrating on typescript and pictures separately.
Allan Ahlberg also worked with other illustrators such as: Fritz Wegner, Andre Amstutz, Colin McNaughton, Faith Jaques, Joe Wright and Emma Chichester Clarke, creating the bestselling Happy Families series, which have been called 'miniature masterpieces'. This excellent series has sold in excess of 2.6 million copies since its launch in 1980. Their daughter, Jessica was also born in 1980 and she became a great inspiration to their work.
Allan Ahlberg also wrote fiction titles for older children, including Woof!, The Bear Nobody Wanted, The Giant Baby and The Better Brown Stories. He impressed teachers across the country with two very successful poetry collections: Heard It In The Playground, and Please Mrs Butler, reflecting the funny side of life at school.
