Currently a playwright and director, Patrick M. Hughes was born in Ireland, ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1963, and served in the University of San Paulo and the shantytowns of Brazil, with special focus on human rights during the dictatorship, until 1973. He completed his Master’s degree at The New School for Social Research, and began teaching Social Theory and Sociology of Religion at The City University of New York in 1977 where he completed a doctorate on the politics of Irish literature, drama, history and song in the 19th Century. Throughout those years he was a strong advocate of human rights in Latin America. He published short stories for children as a hobby in the 90,s. In 1991, he joined the Human Rights Component of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cambodia, served in South Africa during the abolition of apartheid and became Deputy Director of Human Rights Division in Angola where he wrote many tragicomic plays on human rights for both television, radio and the National Theater in Luanda. He also wrote the screenplay for a tragi-comic film to train police and military in human rights. He retired in 1983, but has been busy writing a YA novella, and a middle grade fantasy novel, plus writing historical plays about St. Augustine. He has also taught Human Rights at Flagler College.
