About Emil Oestereicher
Emil Oestereicher is a published author. A published credit of Emil Oestereicher is Thinking, Feeling, & Doing. Emil was my best friend in New York City, and the chair of my dissertation committee. He died suddenly of a heart attack 1983 at the height of his career, as a brilliant lecturer at the New School for Social Research, Graduate Program and The Graduate Center of The City University of New York, where he taught social theory. He was born in Hungary of Jewish parents, survived the Nazi's but only barely. He was ahide with many kids in a loft at a nun's convent when the Nazi's came. They took away all the children. Emil was at the end of the room under a bed. The German Officer was the last to leave, and he turned back, leaned down and looked Emil in the eye before turning away. Emil escaped the Soviet invasion and fled to America in 1956, and met Stanley Diamond, another great friend of mine, who was studying anthropology in Chicago. Emil went on to get his doctorate, and both he and Stanley met once more at the New School for Social Research. Stanley in late life as Professor Emeritus took to poetry, and at times read with Ginsberg events. When I went to his apartment he would insist I listened to all his poems. Emil on the other hand loved classical music and led me through its historical phases in his loft which rose up like a cathedral. I in turn led him to appreciate the folk music and poetry of Latin America, especially Brazil's classical guitarists and their lyrics. These men, despite their personal failings and weaknesses were dedicated to Aristotle's common good.
