Maureen Akey was raised on a farm in the Northern Adirondacks. She is one of eight children. She attended Our Lady of Grace Academy for 8 years, followed by 4 years at AuSable Valley Central High School. She was the recipient of 5 scholarships upon graduating highschool- including a Kiwanis scholarship, which enabled her to pursue her academic endeavors.She attended SUNY at Cobleskill, NY and earned an AAS in Nursery Production and Mgmt. She received her BS degree at Cornell University in Plant Science, and her MS degree and PhD studies at the University of Florida in Genetic Engineering in the Horticultural Sciences Dept.
She rears butterflies and insects and can be found tromping through fields and woods most anytime she is not teaching classes.
She currently teaches in the Natural Science Dept at Sante Fe College, Gainesville, FL where she instructs in Microbiology, Biology, and Environmental Sciences.
