Your question is a difficult one...it is very hard to secure these appointments and frankly, I abandoned my attempts to secure such interviews a while ago. All the technical/disease oriented material can be found on the web. You have personal experience--very valuable. You can also check in with support groups on line, or even with your local hospital if there's an active group in your area for the illness/problem you're writing about and attend a meeting. You can also tour your local hospital via their PR laision just to absorb the color and atmosphere for your work. Write about what you know about is a writer's credo. Nothing beats personal experience. Second is other people's experiences, many are out there willing to share. Good luck on your project. Give a big hug to my readers.
