I am an author and illustrator, based in New Jersey. I usually write and illustrate my own work, but occasionally I undertake illustrating someone else’s manuscript; I’ve done books with Margaret Wise Brown, Kevin Lewis, Merriam Schlein, and Pamela Duncan Edwards. I typically publish with Hyperion, Orchard, Simon and Schuster, Putnam and Abrams. Both my writing and illustrating emphasize imagination, whimsy and play, though I always like to try something new. On the illustration side, I enjoy experimenting with different media, and my work varies from the modeled, semi-realistic, to the flat and patterned. Publishers tend to think of me as the guy who paints cars and trucks really well, a specialist in books for boys, but I have been trying my hand at painting and writing cuddly animal stories and books with girl protagonists, too.

I’ve got a series of young-adult fiction underway for Abrams, a fantasy called “Elf Realm”. The first book comes out in the fall, and I am having fun writing in a longer form.

I am also quite fond of poetry and song. I’ve done a couple of books that come with CDs of me and my talented musical friends performing song-versions of the poems in the books. When I do school visits or conference appearances, I always bring a guitar to sing some poem/songs. I get lots of email from fans who want me to send them MP3’s!
