I earned my MFA in Creative Writing at Rutgers Newark in May 2011 and currently teach fiction and essay writing at Montclair State University as part of the First Year Writing faculty. My first book, From the Abuelas' Window, which is available as a an ebook and in print from booklocker.com and the Apple store received great reviews by the Star Ledger, New Jersey and The Montclair Times, one of North Jersey Media's local papers. It was among the top bestsellers locally during its debut year and has been compared to Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It is fairly unknown. I am seeking an agent and publishing house which could expand its readership and bring it into the mainstream. Adults and young readers alike have enjoyed the journey to Chile found in From the Abuelas' Window. Its lyrical prose brings to life the beautiful Chilean central valley where the characters face difficult circumstances with love and compassion during the Pinochet era of political upheaval during the 1970's. In my work, I seek to tell stories that have been buried in the past due to the whims of history. I am currently researching the story of a young girl who escaped the Soviet invasion of Estonia during the World War II years, a story buried under 50 years of censorship by the Soviet regime which lasted until 1991. I am also busy writing a work of fabulous fiction that takes place in my home town and challenges the myths and beliefs that hold communities of different origins apart from each other. My love of literature, history and culture shows up in my work in ways that sometimes surprise even me!
