Born on August 20th in Toronto, Canada, Margaret Bloy Graham spent summers as a child in England and the United States. In the 1940s, she moved to New York City to become a commercial artist and worked for the Condé Nast magazine group. It was at work that she met Eugene Zion. The two were married in 1948. Ursula Nordstrom, the editor at Harper & Row, persuaded Gene Zion to try writing a children’s book. The first collaboration between Zion and Graham was All Falling Down, which received a Caldecott honor in 1951. The following year Graham received her second Caldecott Honor for Charlotte Zolotow’s The Storm Book. Zion and Graham are perhaps best remembered for their creation of Harry, the Dirty Dog. There were several books in the Harry series. In 1968, Zion and Graham were divorced. Gene Zion died in 1975. Ms. Graham wrote and illustrated books on her own, including Be Nice to Spiders and the Benjy series.
