About Fred Neff
Fred Neff started his training in the Asian fighting arts at the age of eight. In 1974, Mr. Neff received a rank of fifth degree black belt in karate. The same year he was made a master of the art of kempo at a formal ceremony. He is also proficient in Chuan-Fa, judo and jujutsu. Mr. Neff’s study of East Asian culture has taken him to such lands as Hong Kong, Japan, the People’s Republic of China and Singapore.
For many years, Mr. Neff has used his knowledge to help and educate others. He has taught karate at the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, Hamline University, and Inver Hills Community College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has also organized and supervised self-defense classes for special education programs, public schools, private institutions, and city recreation departments. Included in his teaching program have been classes for law enforcement officers.
He has received many awards in recognition of his accomplishments and his active community involvement, including the City of St. Paul Citizen of the Month Award in 1975, a Commendation for Distinguished Service from the Sibley County Attorney’s Office in 1980, the WCCO Good Neighbor Award in 1985, the HLS Justice Award for Lawyers in 1985, the Lamp of Knowledge Award from the TCLG. in 1986, Creative Thinker Award for Lawyers in 1986, Honors Certificate For Authors-Children's Reading Roundtable of Chicago 1988, commendation awards from N.W. Community T.V. 1989, 1990, and 1991, the Presidential Medal of Merit Award in 1990, the Wisdom Award in 1998, and the Ronald Reagan Gold Medal 2004.
Fred Neff graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Education with high distinction in 1970. In 1976 he received his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Neff is a practicing attorney in the twin cities area of Minneapolis, and St. Paul in Minnesota.
He is the author of 19 books, including Great Puzzles of History, Mysterious Persons in History, Everybody’s Book of Self-Defense, Lessons from the Western Warriors, Lessons from the Fighting Commandos, Lessons for the Japanese Masters, Lessons from the Eastern Warriors, Lessons from the Art of Kempo, Lessons from the Samurai and the eight books that make up Fred Neff’s Self-Defense Library: Basic Jujitsu Handbook, Basic Karate Handbook, Basic Self-Defense Manual, Foot-fighting Manual for Self-Defense and Sport Karate, Hand-fighting Manual for Self-Defense and Sport Karate, Keeping Fit: A Handbook for Physical Conditioning and Better Health, Manual of Throws for Sport Judo and Self-Defense, and the Self-Protection Guidebook for Girls and Women.
