From the first thing in the morning, Jayden is so excited about his birthday, because turning ten is a very grown up thing to do. He is excited about a lot of other things, too. For example, when the school bus driver, Mr. Peterson, tries to persuade Jayden to be a teacher, he happily exclaims that he wants to be a doctor to help sick kids feel better.

Throughout the day, everyone he meets has a different idea about what Jayden wants. At Mr. Brown�s Ice Cream Shop, he wants his favorite flavor, the coconutty, purple-peppermint crunch, but Mr. Brown�s daughter Molly strongly believes that he should try the cookie caramel assault. Jayden, however, makes his own decision and has the flavor he wants. At the library, Ms. Goldberg, the librarian, isn�t so sure Jayden should be a doctor either, and suggests that he may want to repair and restore cars like his uncle. Jayden sticks to his guns, and chooses a book with a doctor on the cover. At the playground, his friend Sammy wants to swing from the monkey bars, but Jayden�s game is basketball.
