This volume is designed to integrate the study of reading and writing skills and the history, culture, and language of our state. As author Sally Buckner introduces students to the wealth and variety of literature produced by North Carolina writers, she also provides the opportunity for them to read and write more effectively and efficiently. Our Words, Our Ways includes a variety of genres such as imaginative literature (poetry, short stories, excerpts from novels, and plays); non-fiction (essays, biography, articles, and exploration accounts); legends from the Tuscarora and Cherokee Indians; and tall tales and ghost stories from across the state. The text is divided into two major Heritage, arranged chronologically from reports of the earliest explorers up to events in 1975; and Home, a survey of contemporary North Carolina life, literature, and concerns. Appropriate for literature classes and for social studies classes, this volume is a perfect example of how effective interdisciplinary teaching can be.
