About Susan

After working in children's services at the Los Angeles Public Library for 35 years, I retired in 2007. I just finished reading the last Lucky book. [sigh] I like the way Lucky and the characters around her constantly change a little, just like in real life. I also admire your writing style: simple yet makes you feel something.

Lucky is just as charming in LUCKY BREAKS as she was in the first book! I especially liked hearing more about Lincoln, the giggling fits with Paloma, and the wonderful, warm ending with the kids looking up at the stars and talking a little ways away from the adults. You are famous? My friend, Effielee Morris was the developer of children's services in San Francisco and is now fighting cancer. She probably would love a "get well" card from you. We loved your book.

I love Lucky! I found her especially endearing when she sat on her guardian's lap at bedtime, but faced forward because she thought she was too old to be sitting on someone's lap. I liked the way she thought her bug collection would be famous--I remember thinking things like that as a kid. When s... more
