''Hi mum, still remember when I was born?'' I asked mum.
''When you were born? Why? Of course I do. How can a mother forget a day like that? That moment was unique- very unique. I remember that you cried, like a coward! Every child cries when he is born but you exaggerated it. You cried furious- furiously that the hospital shook.''
''I know, mom, I know. That was because when I saw my new environment, it wasn't what I had expected. I was furious that you took such a bold step to bring me into such an environment'' I told her and she just smiled.
I was born in the early years of the 1980s. Growing up was hard- extremely hard. I can still vividly remember our house, which was thatched and only two rooms. My parents were poor- my father a farmer and my mother a house -wife. Together with eight children, we lived in this two room house. My father had earlier fallen into the temptations of alcohol and became one of its greatest disciples. I believed earlier then, that he was done with us, at least financially. He was (and still is) a wonderful father but I hated him because his meagre finances had long found a bottomless bottle to fill. This left mom, who did everything possible to ensure that food was always on the table despite the mounting economic crisis that brought untold hardship to the family. Life was hard and most often, we depended on the charity of my aunts and uncles.
At age four, I started my education journey. I can still very well remember my first day in school. It was so important that it found an important place in my diary. Why? I was late for school and 'titcha' Cyprain thrashed my buttocks with 'lekep' a tiny piece of stick used by teachers in those days to punish pupils and restore order. When used on you, the effects was that you either resent school and become a recalcitrant or you straighten up and become a good pupil. On that first day, I chose the former. I am still grateful that 'lekep' was used on me on that first day- it contributed in defining my future.
School was good. There was a lot to learn, new friends to meet and many adventures to undertake. But before I settled down into my new environment, I was made to move. It was a common for children to live with grandparents and that was where I went to. Grand mama and papa lived many kilometres away. This meant a change of environment and lifestyle but I soon adapted to this new environment.Although my new home was polygamous (grand pop had three wives) I grew up very independently. Grand mama was always away but independence and freedom did not make me go astray.
I worked hard at school. No one called me a genius and I wasn't one and did not think I will ever become one. But I was intelligent enough never to have repeated a class until I obtained a masters degree many years later. I obtained my First School Living Certificate in Catholic School Fontem in 1992. It was one of the first primary schools in the village. In that same year, I proceeded to Government High School Fontem. In 1997, I obtained my GCE Ordinary Levels. After I obtained my certificate, I moved to Saint Joseph's College, Sasse, the first secondary school in Cameroon, which was created in 1939 during the reign of the British colonial masters. In 1999, I obtained my GCE Advanced level and enrolled to study at the University of Buea in Cameroon. I studied Political Science and minored in Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2002, I graduated with an honours degree in Political Science. Between 2002 and 2006, I worked for ANUCAM Centre for Research and Development, wrote and operated a small private business. It had always been my wish to further my studies. That opportunity came in 2006. By then, I had become fed-up with the corrupt political system in Cameroon. At OrebroUniversity in Sweden, I studied Electronic Government and obtained a Degree of Masters of Electronic Government in June 2008. In July 2008, I moved to London, United Kingdom, where I took up employment. All along, I had known I will become a writer. Many of my unpublished works were written in my teen years. These manuscripts are currently being improved. My first book, The Three Little Detectives and the Throne was published in London, in 2008. My second manuscript- a novella has been completed and I am actively looking for a sponsor and publisher. My first novel and probably the third book is about knife crimes in London and will be complete soon.
I love travelling. I have travelled to and lived in many towns and cities around the world. Some of these towns and cities include Orebro, Stockholm, Uppsala, Sundsvall (all in Sweden), London, Manchester, Burmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, Northhampton (United Kingdom) Leuven, Brussels (Belgium) Geneva (Switzerland) Cassablanca (Morocco) Rome (Italy). I have equally visited and or live in almost all the major towns and cities in Cameroon, where I was born. The experiences I gather from these places greatly affect the way I write.
I study a lot. When I was a kid, my grandfather told me the secrets of the world are found in books. 'If you want to know about these secrets, study' he had advised me.
Presently, I share my time between two countries: United Kingdom and Sweden. In the United Kingdom, I do research for my upcoming novel Tears of London. In Sweden, I study Journalism, Media and Democracy at Mid Sweden University. In Belgium and in Cameroon, I visit friends and family.
A detailed story of my life is being compiled under the title Memories of a Growing Boy. Come back for more on my blog. Here, you will read my diary
