About Roger
I was born in London, and came to live in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in the mid 'fifties, when I was about five or so years old. My family settled in Bulawayo.
We moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, where I have worked in fields completely removed from my training in metallurgy. For example, I have worked in major retail chain of clothing stores, owned a restaurant during which time I met a wide variety of people, ranging from alcoholics, junkies and prostitutes to religious fanatics of all colours and creeds, most of whom have assured me that the world as we know it must be ending!!!
I have been a Project manager for the piping of a complete dairy's product lines in the middle of the Free State in South Africa, where only Afrikaans is spoken. It was a learning experience as I can't speak Afrikaans.I ran a couple of small companies as a director.
In the meantime, our children were growing to wonderful young adults and on a holiday in the Drakensburg Mountains one year; a little bat flew into our chalet and was taken care of by our daughter, Nicole. The significance of this will become apparent a little later.
Nicole started writing a story about the above little bat and called it Marvin, when, in December 2002, the worst tragedy imaginable struck and she passed away in London, leaving a husband and a ten - month old daughter. I resolved to write the story of "Marvin the Spybat" in her place and is my first offering as a writer.
In addition, I have finished writing a series of eight short stories (800 to 1000 words each) for a picture book for 4 to 6 year olds. It has occurred to me that if my work is good enough, I would find a lot of enjoyment in writing children's books; an occupation that I would have thought impossible to me only a few years ago - indeed I wouldn't have thought of it at all.
