Yes, main characters can be that way. It's a good sign actually, when they are so fully realized as to be independent from our plans. Happy Writing!

Thanks for your question. I'm not the best person to ask because I don't outline first. I do character pre-writing, then write a draft, then throw it away and delete the file, and then rewrite until I have something I think I can build into a real story. Hm.
