I'm not sure I can give any advice. I can only tell you what I've done. I took a correspondence course in writing, found a critique group, and read lots of books on the craft of writing. Stephen King's On Writing and Willaim Zinsser's On Writing Well are two that I highly recommend for starters. I continue to read all the time. The most important thing I do is write and re-write, a ton.
