Carol has written five books and more than 400 articles on animals, nature, and science. Her recent book, Pets and the Planet: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Pet Care was nominated for the 2009 Northwest Booksellers Association Award. Carol teaches writing as well as workshops that explore her book topics.

Carol earned an MFA from the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts. She also holds a B.A. in Science Education from Duke University, taught high school science, worked in zoos, museums, and a wildlife hospital, had a career in high technology, and has returned to her first loves—writing and teaching. A member of the National Association of Science Writers, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Carol resides in Portland, Oregon with a grumpy African Grey parrot and two budgies.
