A three-sport athlete and graduate of Northeast High School (Philadelphia) and Arcadia University, Mary was a member of the US Lacrosse Squad for three years. Later she served as both a US Lacrosse Squad Coach and US Team Selector. She taught Physical Education in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and later coached freshmen field hockey and varsity lacrosse at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees, New Jersey. During her time at Eastern, Marino served as Vice-President of the West Jersey Women's Lacrosse Association and was a district official in lacrosse.

In 1987 she began coaching both field hockey and lacrosse at Rowan University. She was the head field hockey coach for eleven years with a 101-82-11 record and in her nineteen years with the lacrosse program, she was 170-115. Both teams received bids to the NCAA National championships and over two dozen athletes were named National and Regional All-Americans teams while Marino was at Rowan. While at Rowan she served on NCAA Regional Ranking Committees in both sports as well as the Regional All-American committees. In 1995 she received the Bea Markwick award for her service to lacrosse and1998 she was selected to the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

In 1993 she wrote On Attack, a book that analyzed the various parts of the attacking game in lacrosse. Upon her retirement from Rowan in 2007 Marino began writing young adult fiction. Her first book, Freshman Season, follows the season of a young field hockey player. Its sequel, First Year Varsity, published this fall, continues the story of the same young athlete.

Marino has three grown daughters and resides in Ventnor, New Jersey, where she also enjoys landscape painting.
