About Sabrina
Sabrina is also known by her married name Sabrina Ann Burkindine.
Sabrina Ann Brown was born in Maryland a state that's life blood is the Chesapeake Bay, watershed, marshes and ocean. Having been blessed in this way Sabrina's art work and mellow and calm demeanor are influenced by living and learning in a state where the environment is essential. She spent her early years in Girl Scouts and Junior Rangers, spending her time close to the land she was born to. She finds inspiration in color that can be found in nature and in prismic surfaces. Inspiring to work in the childrens book field the love for color more then aids her as color is stimulating to a childs mind and the basis for a strong illustration.
The love for art found her easily in elementary school, where she preferred painting to math class. She always had her own style and was never afraid to try something new. Her love for art and creation followed her through out her early school years and in to middle school. Her talent in the arts and her grades caused her to be nominated as a People to People Ambassador two years in a row and to graduate from middle school with honors. This is when she was encouraged by her art teacher to apply to the magnet art school Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in Dundalk, MD.
Patapsco was a great influence on her, it was a mixing pot of students; theatre, visual arts, music and the list goes on. It was here that she met and worked with other students who were like minded when it came to the arts. They would work much like they would in a college. In studio classes where they would use each other as spring boards for ideas. Learning early the necessity for a strong composition and how to critique one another and themselves. She was exposed to many different types of art and experienced the trials and tribulations of competitions and scholarships preparing her for what she could experience outside the doors of high school. She participated in a class project her junior year that combined designs for a mural that featured the mixing pot that was their school. She personally painted about a 6x15 portion of the 50x20 mural. Her senior year, she along with three other students held an independent art show. During this time she was participating in sports, was printed in the 2001 edition of the Who's Who in American High Schools and was a secretary for the National Art Honor Society. She was chosen by the society for a scholarship her senior year for college.
After graduation in 2001 Sabrina ventured for the first time in her life to a city that was not her own. She attended Temple University at the Tyler School of Art campus in Elkins Park,Philadelphia. She received a merit scholarship from the school placing her at the top ten percent of the incoming class. She spent a year at Tyler enjoying the campus , a little bit of the old world on the edge of a big city. But ultimately it was found that Philadelphia while a fine place to visit was not truly for her. Returning home Sabrina then began to plan her next steps which led her to the doors of Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2003 Sabrina began classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art, her major was illustration. While attending school she completed several commission works. Her senior year of college she interned with the independent publishing company "The Writers Lair Books" founded by Shana Yarborough. She participated in company functions like book promotions, The Book Expo in New York and the tree fundraiser for the Kennedy Krieger Institute Christmas of 2005. She was collaborating with a writer for the artwork of a book to be called "Who ate my Window" whose publishing date is to be determined. She graduated from the Maryland Institute in December of 2005. Shortly after Sabrina was married to her long time boyfriend and now husband Brian Burkindine.
Sabrina is a freelance illustrator working currently in Baltimore, MD. She works part-time for Baltimore County Public Schools and attends classes at the Community College of Baltimore County to pursue further interests.
