I see life as though it were a world full of bairros--or neighborhoods--that I wander in and out of. Each bairro is distinct, bold, and impacts me differently. Winding in and out of my Brazilian-American bairro influences much of who I am. It has, for example, helped me connect to the great opportunities relating to humanitarian work. My experiences volunteering as a Portuguese-English translator and working for grass-roots organizations in both Africa and my home country, Brazil, have brought me immense joy . With an undergraduate in English Education and Masters in Bilingual studies, I have found another bairro: teaching. Teaching English & ESL to high school students was a life-changing adventure, and after my husband and I welcomed our 1st son, Mateus, I engaged in teaching at local community colleges, where hours are more flexible. It is the people that I have met in these various bairros who have made each experience precious, real, and lasting. With them, I am always left deeply touched and grateful, and I hope that my writing reflects the joy they have projected onto me.
