About Duncan
Duncan is an award-winning children’s illustrator who has worked on over 40 children’s books. He has a background in gag cartoons – working for the nationals and many magazines – but is best known, under his nom de plume Knife, for illustrating and co-writing the long-running Private Eye strip “It’s Grim Up North London”.
His most recent book series, Badly Drawn Beth (Hachette), won the Laugh Out Loud (Lollie) Award in 2016 in the 6-8 years category. Fleabag Monkeyface (Walker) transferred to television (cITV) Duncan played a key role in character design, storyline (all 52 episodes) and was lead writer.
Duncan is a jazz aficionado and writes a monthly spoof review column for Jazzwise magazine; he has contributed humorous pieces to Nutmeg: The Scottish Football Periodical and BBC Music Magazine. He occasionally dusts down his tenor saxophone, having previously played in a blues band that haunted the rough and tough margins of the Hertfordshire delta (Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring – okay, so it’s not Mississippi).
He still becomes unsettled at the thought of drawing bicycles and tries to get his nose in a book whenever possible.
