About Jill
It’s not easy to talk to children about childhood cancer, nor is it easy to find books about this formidable subject.
Each year, approximately 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States, and over 300,000 friends and classmates are impacted by the diagnosis.
Sadly, about 4,000 children die from cancer each year.
Faced with helping her eight year old daughter understand the cancer diagnosis of a classmate, Jill looked for a child friendly, sensitive, yet realistic book. Much to her dismay; the myriad of titles on the shelves seemed to shy away from this subject.
There was an elephant in the room.
Knowing there were too many children who would journey through this unfortunate experience with very few books to make it real, Jill soon realized she would write about a child’s journey through cancer.
Writing about her daughter’s deepest fears, worries, expectations and realizations, "There’s An Elephant In My Room…" became her way to remember a nine year old cancer patient, her amazing journey through cancer, and the invaluable life lessons it provided to those who watched from the sidelines. This book is a tribute to her, and the amazing good that can come from something as devastating and ugly as cancer.
"There’s An Elephant In My Room…" is intended to be read with a child who is looking for a way to find hope, lessen the fear, and minimize “the elephant in the room.” It aims to offer readers a portal to frankness, acceptance, resolution and optimism. It is Jill’s passion to fill this need for books about children and cancer, and to give them hope… even if the story doesn’t have a traditional happy ending.
