About Kim
Kim Flores is a published author of young adult books. A published credit of Kim Flores is Gamma Glamma.
Kim Flores was born on November 24, 1968. She had willfully ignored her Halloween due date after overhearing her mom threaten to nickname her “Spooky”. Kim waited and baked a bit more and made her grand entry four days before Thanksgiving, not wanting to be called “Turkey” either.
Unbeknownst to her, she was to be unable to escape that fate - Kim’s birthday lands on Thanksgiving every five years.
Kim spent her wee younger years in the sunny beach-side city of Corpus Christi that claims Farrah Fawcett, Selena, Eva Longoria and the Whataburger as its own. To this day, Kim claims that she and Whataburger are really BFF.
After her family had stayed in Corpus long enough to let her get her toes in the sand and mouth full of saltwater, her family moved up the coast to Houston, but only long enough to get a passing glimpse of Astroworld.
During the late seventies when Dallas was gearing up to be a primetime hit and the Cowboy Cheerleaders guest appeared on The Love Boat, Kim’s family decided Big D was the place to be.
So it was in Dallas, Texas where Kim was to spend her glory years with her five siblings in public school. She was a proud S. S. Conner Cub, a W.H. Gaston Warrior and finally graduated as a Bryan Adams Cougar.
Her school years were spent wrestling with reading, writing, and higher math, performing in plays, making movies and twirling batons. In most regards a model student, her record was marred by frequent admonishment for talking in class. In the end, she didn’t make valedictorian, but was chosen senior class favorite.
After graduation Kim thought she might pursue a career in theater. But when she got to the University of North Texas, she realized that she didn’t love The Crucible that much. Not to mention wearing the all-black Drama major uniform during Texas hundred-plus degree weather was anything but comfortable.
Her parents Juan and Ameila encouraged her to use her writing skills and natural gift of gab to pursue journalism and a career as a television news anchor. As her twirling days had left her equally as skilled with a can of hairspray as with a baton, this seemed an appropriate ambition. At some point Kim found she preferred to be behind the camera, gave up the can and focused on a career in the film industry.
Her parents worried about her “circus choice”, especially after Kim’s first tattoo.
While working as a production assistant on film and TV sets during college, Kim faced a financial choice between putting her meager wages toward school or food and toilet paper. As having toilet paper was non-negotiable and Kim was addicted to Whataburger’s mustard, pickle and onion essence, Kim left college with onion breath and no diploma.
While working in Dallas’ film industry in production and as a script supervisor, Kim directed a short film on the side with her friends to keep her passion for the art simmering. And exactly like a movie or rather on one, Kim met a cinematographer named Mike who stirred other passions.
Combing their superpowers and love for making films, the duo kim + mike began to co-direct and shoot their own short films. In 1997, they wrote, produced, directed an indie feature called Vocessitas/Little Voices that went on to win an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts Award) for outstanding independent feature film.
In 2000, kim + mike also won awards for their short film MAID! MADONNA! WHORE!-the Latina in American Cinema, a project partially funded by the talented and super cute director Richard Linklater (Slackers, School of Rock, Fast Food Nation) and his Austin Film Society.
It was also at this time that kim + mike began directing commercials for companies such as Time Warner, Midway Games, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Nickelodeon.
While still working in this circus business, Kim was given the opportunity to pitch a show to a kid’s network about two best friends who were both science freaks and fashionistas. And while the network liked the show, it was a little too “high concept” for them. But as luck would have it, Kim was introduced to a literary agent who asked if she could turn her pitch into a novel. And so she did.
That book, Gamma Glamma, was released in February of 2008. Kim is currently wrapping up her second novel.
Kim divides her time between Texas and NYC. She still spends too much time talking too much. But these days she shares her Whataburger with 3 dogs and Mike while writing, developing TV projects, and trying to find time to go public with her Needy Babies toy line. Kim just added a new addition to her family. His name is Magnus which means "great"!
