I’ve been involved in graphic design/illustration/publishing since 1971. My purpose in this note is simply a word of caution.

As you proceed keep in mind that the difficult part of publishing is not, writing the story, creating the art or printing the book. These elements are all relatively nothing compared to distribution. You will either need to find a reputable distributor who is willing to contract with you, and invest in assisting you (very difficult). Or, you will need to self-distribute and market (very time-consuming…and possibly expensive).

Most of the larger publishing firms will not even look at your book unless an established agent presents it to them. The “Chicken Soup” series is the grand example. The author could not sell her manuscript, she self-published, hit all the bookstores, personally sold her books…and then was picked up by a major publisher.

I hope that you do not find my comments daunting…just a word of caution if someone is going to infer that the process is easy.
