For those magazines, I queried first as a way to begin a relationship with the editor. Some queries resulted in assignments. Other times, editors didn't buy the idea, but because the query gave them an idea of how I write, they gave me a completely different assignment. more

For those magazines, I queried first as a way to begin a relationship with the editor. Some queries resulted in assignments. Other times, editors didn't buy the idea, but because the query gave them an idea of how I write, they gave me a completely different assignment.

Of course, many of my queries don't sell. I try to recycle those ideas to local mags instead, so it doesn't feel like a total waste.

I never complete the article until it's assigned.

I wasn't sure if I should take the time to finish an article before its accepted (I have a good bit of writing work with deadlines, which I'm being paid for!) Thanks. Candice
