About Martin E. P. Seligman
Dr. Seligman is an advocate for the positive psychology movement. He started this movement as a central initiative during his 1998 presidency of the American Psychological Association. He works on positive psychology, learned helplessness, depression, optimism and pessimism. He holds a Ph.D. from Uppsala, Sweden and Doctor of Humane Letters from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.
He is well known in academic and clinical circles and is a best-selling author.
Dr. Seligman's bibliography includes twenty books and 200 articles on motivation and personality. Among his better-known works are Learned Optimism, What You Can Change & What You Can't, The Optimistic Child, Helplessness, and Abnormal Psychology
For over the last decade, Seligman’s focus has been the promotion of research on how to build human strengths, enhancing resiliency and the pursuit of well being. His work has received extensive recognition at the scientific, professional, practice, and popular levels including numerous distinguished awards for scientific achievement from organizations such as the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society and the National Institute of Mental Health

He has lectured around the world sharing with educators, parents and mental health professionals how to build an optimistic life of real rewards and lasting fulfillment. He tells audiences how to choose optimism by learning a new set of cognitive skills that will help adults and children alike take charge, resist depression, feel better, and accomplish more.
He is currently Fox Leadership Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the network director of the Positive Psychology Network and Scientific Director of the Classification of Strengths and Virtues Project of the Mayerson Foundation.
