José Antonio Flores Farfán is a linguistics graduate from the Escuela Nacional de
Antropología e Historia (ENAH) in Mexico City. He received his Master’s in linguistics
from the same institution, and did his doctoral degree at the University of Amsterdam in the
Netherlands, on the social and linguistic contacts and conflicts between the Nahuatl
language and Spanish. Since 1984, he is full time researcher at CIESAS (Centro de
Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social) on social and linguistic
topics related with, among others, language documentation, pragmalinguistics, language
planning and education.
Flores Farfán has developed research collaboration with a number of international
institutions, among others Erasmus University in the Netherlands, the University of
Arizona, and has on-going collaborations with the University of Amsterdam, where he is at
the moment a guest researcher
Flores Farfá n is a member of the Mexican National Research System. Since 1999, he is a
member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. His research has been awarded for its role in
the linguistic and cultural protection of the Nahuatl and other indigenous languages. Since
2004, Professor Flores Farfán has been director of Lingua Pax for Latin American at
UNESCO: www.linguapax.org.
Flores Farfán’s participates in interdisciplinary research, including works on the
educational implicatio ns of research in linguistics and, for instance, has recently worked in
teaching research methods to students from different cultural backgrounds, and developing
methods for the revitalization of endangered languages.
José Antonio is a prolific writer, in English, Spanish, and even in indigenous tongues, such
as Nahuatl. Among others, he has published in the Journal of the Sociölogy of Language,
Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Language and Society, and Estudios de
Cultura Náhuatl, published by the University of Mexico. Together wit John B. Haviland,
he recently coordinated the translation of Essentials of Language Documentation (Gippert,
Himmelman and Mosel, eds.), a most recent publication on the new approaches to linguistic
committed work. He has recently published a book on Nahuatl tongue twisters, and is
currently working on a number of publication projects, including new books for children in
indigenous languages, as well as the edition of a Huehuetlatolli “The speech of the elders”,
together with a book on Language Ideologies, Variation and Purism in Nahuatl.
