Early life.
Isabel spent her first 16 years living in Spain, at a time in which dictator Generalisimo Franco had total control of every aspect of life. To escape from an oppressive atmosphere she applied to the American Field Service Scholarship, which she won in 1963. Passing all necessary competitive examinations granted her the opportunity to come to the United States and study at Trenton High School, in Michigan. That experience changed her life forever. Although she arrived to the States with a fair knowledge of the English language (her father was an English professor in Alicante and patiently requested his four children to speak English at home), the culture she encountered in the States required a profound adaptation and a deep understanding of self and others, here and back home. She learned to observe, to compare and contrast, to analyze and to draw similarities and differences in human beings, societies, beliefs, and ways to see life. Soon she had a world of her own that she learned to translate in order to be part of two worlds.
Translating was actually how she helped her income while in the university in Valencia first, and in Madrid later. Every penny was always spent in travels. Knowing other costumes, other people’s way to live life took her first to every corner of Galicia, Cataluña, País Vasco, Andalucía, Extremadura, País Valenciano, León, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragón. Spain, a country the size of Texas, has four official languages and one of the richest and most varied cultural traditions in Europe. She traveled taking pictures, and taking notes.
From Spain she extended her trips first to the nearby countries, of Portugal, France, Morocco, and then the rest of the world.
She is still traveling.
Some of her books are: Pio Peep! Ten Little Puppies, Mu, Moo!, Rosa Raposa, My Day From A to Z, Blue and Green, Eyes of the Jaguar, A New Job for Pérez the Mouse, On the Wings of the Condor, One, Two, Three who can it be?, Paths, The Quetzal's Journey, Smiles,Steps, Voices, Curtains Up!, Dreaming Fish, Flying Dragon, Laughlin Crocodiles, Singing Horse, Top hat.
Also with Alma Flor Ada and Suni Paz she has published Música amiga, a series of ten CD containing 120 songs both from the Spanish folklore and based on her original poetry.
She has co-authored with Alma Flor Ada a series of books for the teaching of writing, home-school interaction, and bilingual education. AUTHORS IN THE CLASSROOM: A Transformative Education Process contains their philosophy on writing, for teachers, students and their families.
