This class will focus on writing fiction for children: short stories, picture books, chapter books, middle-grade novels, and YA novels. We will discuss characterization; point of view; dialogue; plot; scene and sequel; pace and progression; chapter hooks and cliff hangers; revision; manuscript format; and the submission process. You will have a portfolio of writing exercises, class handouts, and a manuscript-in-progress. Manuscripts will be critiqued in class.
Week 1: Characterization
Week 2: Point of view; dialogue
Week 3: Plot
Week 4: Scene and sequel; pace and progression; chapter hooks and cliff hangers
Week 5: Revision and manuscript formatting
