The descriptive sections drag like a textbook with its descriptions of Rass Island and the crabbing industry. The book picks up when we are introduced to Louise, her closest friend, and her family which includes parents, grandmother, and sister. For most of the book, unfortunately, Louis is about as pleasant as a toothache. And so, although my appreciation of the book has grown since reading it in my teens, it still unsettles me.
