About Daina Chaviano
Daina Chaviano (Havana) is a Cuban writer. She earned her B.A. degree in English Language, at the University of Havana. While living in Cuba, she published several science fiction and fantasy books, becoming the most renowned and best-selling author in those genres in Cuban literature. She has been equally successful as a writer of fantasy/SF and in mainstream literature, winning various awards in both fields.
Her literary subjects cover mythology, eroticism, ancient history, sociology, politics and magic, all blended in a unique personal style of poetic and sensual images.
Her most recent novels, belonging to the series «The Occult Side of Havana», are "El hombre, la hembra y el hambre" (Azorín Award for Best Novel, Planeta 1998), "Casa de juegos" (Planeta 1999), "Gata encerrada" (Planeta 2001), and "La isla de losamores infinitos" (Grijalbo 2006), whose publishing rights have been sold to 21 languages, becoming the most translated Cuban novel of all time.
Daina Chaviano was awarded the Gold Medal in the category of Best Spanish Language Book during the first Florida Book Awards 2006, for "La isla de los amores infinitos". The English version of this novel, "The Island of Eternal Love", will be published in June 2008 (Riverhead Books-Penguin), translated by Andrea Labinger.
Chaviano has lived in the US since 1991.
