13 year-old Emily Tyme, a whiz at geography, discovers that she has a natural given ability to be a Mapper. A Mapper, according to benevolent Aunt Nellie, a neighborhood spinster, is someone who can lead other people with special gifts to the proper destination. In this case, Emily is a navigator for someone who has a special knocking handle that opens doors to other places.

But danger isn't far behind so they have another person on their team who is a defender. It is the defender's job to make sure the mapper and keeper are safe and can complete the team's various quests.

And the quest, revealed by Aunt Nellie, is to find the Pieces of the World scattered far and wide. Emily, however, barely knows how to use the tools given to her and must undergo training aboard a mystical sailing ship that visits several strange places. She must pass several tests in order to prove she is a worthy mapper. Until then, her keeper won't be revealed.

In the meantime, Aunt Nellie becomes embroiled in a scandal for picking a mapper without the permission or blessing of the Magical Aunt's Council. For that, she must be punished.

Emily, her best friend Zoey, and a cast of unusual characters embark on the adventure of a lifetime. One in which they learn about teamwork and friendship, and magic.
