Here you shall if your visit be well timed discover a gentleman, equally prosaic, whose amiable and inoffensive features suggest nothing of the stupendous responsibility with which he is invested. This gentleman is popularly known as the Stage Censor, and his duty is understood to be that of guarding the morals of a great nation from the more or less insidious attacks of dramatists and theatre-managers. The ripest product of whatever genius our nation can boast must, in company with the merest pastepot pantomime, pass under the mild eyes of this curious potentate, and be shorn at his command of whatever offends him.
