MoreThe first collected edition of Matthew Arnold s Reports on Elementary Schools was edited by Sir Francis Sandford, afterwards Lord Sandford, who, from 1870 to 1884 was Permanent Secretary to the Education Department. The Reports were published by Messrs. Macmillan in 1889, and this edition having been long since exhausted, the Board of Education have decided to issue a new print of the Reports, under the editorship of Mr. F. S. Marvin, one of His Majesty s Inspectors of elementary schools. The present edition contains several passages from the original Reports not included in the first edition, notably an interesting one giving Matthew Arnold simpressions of the late Sir Joshua Fitch (who was alive when that edition was published) as a lecturer at the Borough Road Training College (p. 241). On the other hand some ephemeral matter, such as variations in the percentage of passes from year to year under the examination sjstem, has been omitted. A valuable commentary upon much that is said in the following Reports will be found in Matthew Arnold s Letters by those attracted to a closer study of his work and opinions. A few notes and a new Introduction have been added. Office of Special Inquiries and Reports, Board of Education, Whitehall, A ugust, 1908. S.W.
